lots of women with PCOS over in the low carb group. LC is the recommended way of eating for women with the diagnosis. lots of success stories over there! http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm — read and post daily, it works! rosie and to reason for myself. It was not pleasant, but father had taught me to think. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Forgive me since this isn’t the right forum for this but earlier when scanning the messages I remember someone posting about PCOS (polysystic ovary syndrome?). I am in the process of being diagnosed for this (should find out tomorrow) and was wondering if anyone had a good site about it I could look at.
Hi guys, I was diagnosed with endo a year ago when I had some endo tissue removed, as well as a polyp in my uterus. A couple years ago I had an ovarian cyst, background to this. When I moved away from home I gained about 70 pounds and my periods stopped for 4 months, I then began heavily bleeding, I was diagnosed with a cyst and had a lap to remove it. Last year was different, I skipped periods but instead of the bleeding I had bad pelvic pain, was on Vicadin for months then. Now the same old thing is happening like with the cyst. I moved to another city and stopped exercising, so my periods stopped, I skipped 3 periods and have been heavily bleeding the past month. My gyn in the other city prescribed me Provera for 10 days (I can’t go see a new endo specialist until next month-hubby’s new employer insurance doesn’t start until March 1st). Well today was my last day for the Provera, I woke up at 5am with heavy bleeding, took the last one and now it’s light. I’m having sharp pains with the Provera. I’m very worried that since that was the last one, I’m going to bleed until I get in next month. I called my old gyn again and they are trying to figure out if I should go to the ER or get more Provera, I should be getting a call back soon. Any advice? I feel so weak right now, and of course I can’t have much of a social life with all of the heavy bleeding. :’( Jennifer

Response:

Might be polyps again as well as endo. IF your pain is real bad you might go ahead and go to the ER. They can give you strong meds to counter act the pain. MY gyn has me go to the ER if i am soaking a pad per hour. Bonner

Response:

Hi Bonner, Do polyps cause that continual bleeding? The pain isn’t really that bad, not like last time. The bleeding is a little light tonight. I talked to my doctor’s nurse and she said it should be normal to bleed another 7-10 days, but not after that. I’m not sure I understand that it should be normal. Only 2 nights this month did I soak pads in about 10-15 minutes, that’s when I went to the ER. Jennifer

My blood count last week was normal at the ER, surprisingly. Unfortunately we just moved here, so my husband’s new employer insurance doesn’t start until March, so I have an appt set with an endo specialist next month. :) Jennifer

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Jennifer, Yes polyps can cause bleeding. MY GYN calls it hemorrhaging when you bleed and soak a pad every 10-15 minutes. He in the past has told me to go to the ER for this kind of bleeding. You can bleed to death he said. Some women bleed longer then7-10 days. IF you continue talk to your doctor. Your hematitcrit SP could be low as well as your Iron count. Polyps can just start bleeding at any given time. Like a tare in the polyp. Polyps in the colon can also bleed it basically the same thing only in the uterus or the side walls.
Are you dealing with something like acne and hair growth? It could be possible that you are also dealing with PCOS (poly-cystic ovary syndrome). I’m not a medical expert adn I’m not diagnosing you but I do believe that skipping periods and having weight gain like that could be symptoms of PCOS. There is a support group for pcos like there is for endo….alt.support.pcos I’m sure they could give you more information. I don’t know about polyps….I know my mom went through some wretched stuff with fibroid tumors and such before her hysterectomy.
LOL, Well pregnancy is out of the ? for me. I had an ooprectomy a few months ago due to a cyst the size of a grapefruit and a hidden benigh tumor behind it. I have Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome and very seldom ovulated and chances of getting pregnant seemed nil but when the doc said that sometimes when an ovary is removed a woman with PCOS might start ovulating again I told him… "Ok then, while your in there do a tubal ligation". I adopted one and want no more. Guess I just have a quirk right now. I also notice something else. B4 LC’ing I loved water but with the nasty taste in my mouth now water tastes like chit!
I can’t speak to the PCOS, but many people find that low carb eating ameliorates or even eliminates some of the pains and problems of lyme. Hope that is the case for you. BarbF

Hi Dawn– I recently started a vegan (yes, it can be done!) low-carb diet due to self-diagnosed PCO. It makes sense as a diet for me, as I’ve gradually been cutting down on sugar and concentrating more on protein, just because I feel so crappy after a lot of sugar. What an eye-opener, though, to actually read the labels, and see that the "healthy" breakfast of bran flakes/wheat germ/ soymilk and glass of OJ I was eating for breakfast everyday was socking me with at least 70 carbs. I am shooting for keeping carbs under 100, have been doing so quite easily since Monday (not very long, I grant you). Though I’ll never be in ketosis, I think I will lose weight if only because I’m feeling more full/ eating fewer calories. So far, so good. Paula

I have a lot of the symptoms of pcos but the lab results say ‘no’ although I hear they are not definitive. For breakfast try a protein shake, bacon, sausage, Atkins (or any other brand) protein bars, strawberries and whipped cream… Here is a good shake that tastes just like a Dreamsicle, I’m addicted to it: 1 can of diet orange soda (prefer Dite Rite Tangerine with Splenda) 2 Tbls heavy cream 1 or 2 scoops of vanilla flavored egg protein powder. Ice, if desired. Blend at medium speed for 1 minute. You can substitute 16 oz of water and two heaping tsp of Orange Sugar Free Metamucil for the soda if you need some fiber. Sounds gross, tastes great, trust me. Also, Diet Rite makes Rasberry and Strawberry Splenda pop so you could substitute either of those for the orange. GNC has the protein powder as well as other protein shakes in various flavors. I love these for breakfast. Melissa

Mrs. G Hi: I have been diagnosed with "Polycistic Ovary Syndrome". My Doctor said that for now, the only treatment available is "Glucophage 500mg". I’m supposed to take three pills of 500mg. each a day, but these pills get me an upset stomach, vomits and diarrhea. Is there anything else to treat this disease? If not, is there anything that could possibly neutralize this secondary effect? Please help me! thankful.

Hi, Delurking for a moment. You might also want to try taking it with your meals. I am on it too and did have some stomach problems when I first started it and each time I increased the dosage….but I only started with 1 500mg once a day and then worked up to 3 of them which helped. But when I started to take it with my meals instead of on an empty stomach, that seemed to make the upset stomach considerably less. Good luck! Deb

Response:

My advice is tough it out! The side effects only last for a little while then you will feel great. You should be taking the pills with food…if you are taking it three times a day…try breakfast lunch and dinner time. Shel P.S. I had the same side effects for a month or so then they eased up. still have some stomach upset though when I eat certain foods like a lot of dessert of rich carb loaded foods with alot of fat in them…so needless to say I don’t eat those things anymore!

In the US, the generic metformin is not yet available. I was one of the 50% of women who didn’t respond to Glucophage at all other than being so sick I lost 25 pounds and was afraid to get too far from a bathroom! I’m currently taking Avandia. Your dr. is wrong in saying that Glucophage is the only choice. Avandia and Actos are also options for women with PCOS. Have you checked out www.pcosupport.org?? beth

Glucophage and metformin are exactly the same thing. One is the brand name and one is the generic name. I’ve been on glucophage for almost a year now. The side effects go away after a few weeks. The best way to take it is to take it while you are eating- not before or after, but right in the middle of a meal. Hang in there, glucophage is a miracle drug- and has really made a huge impact on me. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Nothing against you but I live in the US and am using Metformin. I live in Alaska. It has been available here for over 4 months at least since that is how long I have been on it. I started on Glucophage but was changed after two months due to Metformin has less side effects. You may wish to call your local pharmacy and see if they just dont stock that version. Hope this helps you. Mrs. G If you doubt me, I can scan the label off the container and email it to your personal email. Sorry.

Metformin hydrochloride is just the generic drug name for Glucophage. It is no gentler than Glucophage, which is the Bristol Myers Squibb brand name. But your advice to give it time and avoid certain sugary things is very good. Slowly working up to a full dose also helps. Beth

<Snip According to my doctor, when I was diagnosed, the only thing that can be done is to go on birth control pills that will regulate the sex hormones, but if you are trying to get pregnant, there’s a whole host of drugs to start with before IVF is needed.

Your doctor is terribly misinformed; low-carbing, insulin sensitizing drugs, exercise and other things can all regulate the hormones by controlling the root cause. Chances are, a birth control pill will only make PCOS worse, and even if it doesn’t it just masks the icky cosmetic symptoms. I’d hate to see anyone diagnosed with PCOS told that BCP are the only thing available for hormonal regulation.
Is there anything the RE can do for high hormone levels? I am on Glucophage – it seems to be working on the blood insulin, but I’m not sure about the hormone levels. Its guess work on my part until August 18. I’m getting AF on time (3 cycles 35 days, this one 30 days – so I guess I’m back to normal) – think I should start with the OPK again? Or should I just be patient and wait until the RE says okay? He doesn’t think IVF will be necessary if I can get the hormone level back to normal… any ideas on how to do that? Is he treating me with right way? HELP!!!
High testosterone, but everything else normal is a big warning flag for Poly-Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The outward symptoms are not having a period regularly, oily skin, body hair, difficulty in losing weight, and mood swings. According to my doctor, when I was diagnosed, the only thing that can be done is to go on birth control pills that will regulate the sex hormones, but if you are trying to get pregnant, there’s a whole host of drugs to start with before IVF is needed.

dear friends I read a post not so long ago about someone who increased his sperm volume/quality on the day of sperm collection for IVF by, well, cooling his testicles with ice cubes (I must admit I have trouble picturing anyone doing that while… collecting, but hey, someone did it and it worked…) Could anyone please tell me if it was my imagination (I eat, sleep, drink and basically live for, by and through this newsgroup…) or if it actually worked? I’m afraid dh thinks I just want to make things harder for him to get back at him for not having to give himself injections everyday so I need written proof Thanks all and best of luck!
I missed the chat tonight because I was sitting in the ER. I went to my reg dr this afternoon and she sent me right over to the hospital to have an ultrasound done. The dr said that everything appeared normal, but he thinks that I may have some cysts inside my ovary besides the normal kind. Also he said that in order to deal with it I would need my ovary out. This really scares me, I am only 19 and the thought of having an ovary removed is really upsetting. He also said that I need to go into the urgent care center to have another blood test done tomorrow because he thinks that I have internal bleeding…is that normal with endo? But anyways…I am done venting thank you all! Zoe

I’m not a medical professional but I don’t think you necessarily have to have the ovary out. I may bemixing things up, but cysts inside the ovaries sound like PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and I have a friend who has it and still has all her equipment….there is another support group online that could give you more information about it (alt.support.pco). I only know a little….I know it’s painful, can include weight gain and acne, and like endo can affect fertility in some women. The internal bleeding may or maynot be endo related….as I understand it, part of endo is that the implants bleed inside us like our uterine lining bleeds out as our periods. Is this doc a GYN and does he have a clue that you have endo? I’m sorry you spent last night in ER…I’ve yet to wind up there due to endo…I was in a few months ago for other reasons though….not fun! *HUGGLES* Tricia (the first one)

Response:

I had a cyst inside an ovary and it was taken out during surgery (it was causing some nasty pain) and was just a "normal" cyst. I’m not sure what he means by internal bleeding, unless he suspects some kind of injury, and assuming he’s not talking about the bleeding that endo tissue will do during your period, wherever it is. Good luck! Sue Ann M.
