Question:

I am on desogen for BCP and I know that it can cause blood clots. I have been having this persistant pain in the same area in my left leg and I was wondering if this could be a blood clot. Its not a feeling as if I pulled something, its something mroe deep inside. I went to the store and bought some Bayer just in case, but I am really worried about it. Does anyone know much about what blood clots feel like?? Help please!

Sorry if you have a ton of responses to this post, I’ve been out of town but wanted to reply. I’ve never had blood clots, but my grandmother has. She had complained of a deep, throbbing pain for about a week before we convinced her to go to the doctor. My suggestion would be play it safe, call your doctor, explain what is going on and make an appointment. Even if it turns out to be nothing, it’s worth going for the peace of mind it brings. Hi, Ive written some files to a cd and now i cant read the files, i put the cd in and then it says there are no files on the cd but there is space taken up. The cd has not been finalised but i have read the files off of it before. Is there anyway that i can read the files. This is urgent as the work on the disk needs to be in on monday. More than five pounds, less than ten. (The London black-cab fare structure is hideously complex, being based on both distance and time, so it’s difficult to be very precise — traffic conditions can make a big difference.) Fares go up by about 20% at 8pm and again at 10pm. I don’t think there are any baggage charges.

The same trip can cost almost twice as much if during rush hour. Go get yourself a cup of coffee and wait until it’s closer to 1000. Fares go up by about 20% at 8pm and again at 10pm. I don’t think there are any baggage charges.

Metformin and side effects

Side effects vary. They say to start on it really slowly and work yourself up. It took me three months to get myself up to my 2000mg dose. I started out with 500mg with dinner for 1 week, then added 500mg w/breakfast for 2 weeks. Then I added another pill with dinner for 2 weeks, and had to slack off for a couple weeks because of side effects, which were diarrhea and pains in the kidney area (that were bowel problems because of the metformin). After I started up again a couple weeks later I worked up the same way. 500mg one week, 1000mg the 2nd week, 1500mg the third and fourth week and 2000mg after that. I was fine this time and have been taking 2000mg /day since August 2002. It did cut down my appetite considerably. I was only hungry every 4-5 hours instead of hungry all the time. I didn’t want to eat when I wasn’t hungry – the thought of food would make me sick to my stomach unless I was actually hungry. This was VERY GOOD because it let me eat less and feel more satisfied. My portions got smaller too. After a while I started having normal periods. After 8 months on metformin I got pregnant. Unfortunately I am miscarrying so I lost the baby. But it was a big success for us considering that without metformin I did not have periods or ovulate at all. My gyno tried me on metformin. I was on it for about 3 months. I started taking 500 mg then the next day i increased it till we had it up to 2500 mg a day. The only real side effects i personally had was thta i wasnt the least bit hungry and i kept throwing up and having stomach cramps. After about 3 months of it my doctor took me off it. Aldactone flushes testosterone out of the body, so it can really mess up a developing male baby. You absolutely can’t take it if there’s any chance of becoming pregnant. Hi Misty, I’ve had about 9 laser treatments on my face and started them about 3 yrs ago when it was very new. I can say that your information is very accurate. You have to let the hair grow for 6 weeks, but you can shave it in the meantime! The place I went used the gentlelase crygenic cooling laser. The first 2 treatments I had were hell to let it grow out before hand. However, it is worth it!!! I used to have almost enough hair for a moustache, goatee and sideburns. Now, my face looks great and is almost hair free. My last treatment was about 6 months ago and there still isn’t enough hair to merit a 10th treatment. What I have now is a clear face with the occassional hair that I pluck. I would also recommend that you take aldactone, a great anti-androgen that will help with acne as well. Hello, I have been fighting with my hair problem for years. Shaving every morning only to have noticable hair back on my face by afternoon. I went into seclusion for a week because I wanted to try waxing so my skin would look smoother for a little longer, and they told me I needed to let it grow. After waxing once a week for two months I couldn’t take it any longer. I wanted information on laser removal. I knew it would be expensive, but I had to see how expensive. To my surprise, not as expensive as I thought. In my area we have 2 -4 places that do Laser and I believe the competion of these places have lowered the costs. It is still high, but comparible to if I was waxing once a week. The firsrt 3 treatments are the most costly then the next 3 are about half price. It’s often easier to get a cab on one of the streets around Paddington than at the station itself, in my experience. Doesn’t solve the problem if luggage is the issue, of course.

It’s a nice hotel. Email the concierge – they probably have a private car pickup service they use. We paid about 35 pounds for Marble Arch to Heathrow. Nice new Mercedes with a courteous driver in a suit who assisted with the luggage. On the other end of the scale, we have taken the tube from Heathrow to Knightsbridge, which is an easy journey on the same line. Cheap, but luggage beyond what you can carry up steps is too much for the tube in my experience. The Paddington express plus cab to your hotel for two will cost as much, if not more, than the new Mercedes with driver. Gordon

I would assume that many guests of the Stafford choose a chauffuer driven limousine. He has a point…..the "gypsy" cabs (especially for a female travelling alone late at night) are not safe. Just was in London mid-November, saw people passing on anything that wasn’t the standard "black London cab." Are they "unsafe" or just "unsafe in London"? Most of the unofficial cabs are OK though standards of cars and drivers vary widely from company to company. Some of the mini cab companies (not called gypsy here, that is a US term) are suspect and employ dubious drivers, and some have been linked to criminal operations. Some employ mostly immigrant drivers whose knowledge of London is poor. There is a licensing system now being implemented which will hopefully clean out the bad ones and achieve reliable standards. Until now they have not been licensed or regulated; they are unmarked and have to be ordered by phone (they are classed as private hire cars). Officially you cannot just get one on the street though sometimes they hang around looking for work at stations etc. They do not have taxi signs you cannot spot one in the street. People in London can usually recommend a reliable company in their area. They are far cheaper than the official "black" cabs (perhaps 2/3 the price on average) and sometimes have better cars – my New Years Eve car was a huge S-class Mercedes; that is very unsual, but I often get a normal Mercedes. I usually use them in prefernce to black cabs, as do all my friends – I just use black cabs for short rides and when I dont want to order a cab by phone. Also there are not so many black cabs outside the central area. There were some women-only companies – i.e. women drivers and they only took orders from women passgengers but I dont know if they are still in business. Roger

I’ve had cholesterol problems–256. I’ve been on glucophage/metformin for over two months now. My last cholesterol check was 211, not great, but an improvement. My next check will be in January, so I’ll see if it’s gone down any more (increased dosage of metformin and modified diet). Are you currently taking glucophage? It might be helpful to talk to an endocrinologist or RE (if you aren’t already) about your cholesterol problem. They should be able to advise you as to how to treat it. Michelle

Here is a new one to me… Today I went in to a new OB/GYN and discussed Glucophage for PCO, hoping that she’d see it my way and increase my dosage to 1500mg daily. She told me that the REs and Endocrinologists she works with only use 500-1000mg daily (500mg being the usual dosage), and that even higher dosages may work against me in terms of losing weight due to the Met increasing the sensitivity of my insulin. She said higher dosages will not help me lose weight, and will not help me ovulate, nor will it help excess hair growth (though I don’t battle this affliction). She mentioned that Met does nothing for reducing androgens (I have elevated DHEAS and LH levels). She recommends that I go back to 500mg daily…that it may help me ovulate and I may actually lose weight again. In retrospect, I did the best when I was on 500mg…I did gain weight when I went to 1000mg and I feel I haven’t ovulated on 1000mg. I’m not saying she is right (there could be other reasons, of course)… She was pro Atkins (or other LC WOE) so I was happy at least about that. However, here I was thinking that since she is familiar with the use of Met for PCO, she’d increase my dosage. Now she wants me back on 500mg! Has anyone else been told this before? Chele

I believe PCO studies have found 1500 to be the lowest effective dose. It’s laser surgery, where little holes are made on the surface of the ovaries, through the cysts…thus, allowing some of the ovarian tissue beneath the cysts to be exposed. This helps hormones fluctuate regularly as they are supposed to, however I believe the results are short-lived. You can find a lot on ovarian drilling if you do a search and include PCO in the search line. I have mine on video tape, actually. (I know what you’re thinking…it must be rip roaring fun at my house during home movies ) lol) ;-) Chele

I will re-iterate what the others have already said and say Rs 3000 does not go very far…though there probaly is not a whole lot of things to spend it on in Indore. I just thought I’d put a few numbers up for you to get a better handle on what costs are: A 15 minute call to the us will probably cost you around Rs 400. This does not include the service charges and taxes if you use a PCO(public call office). Eating out at a decent indian restaurant will set you back about Rs 100 or so. A cold coke/pepsi when you are on the road is around Rs 15/ You will probably need a motorized 2-wheeler to get around town (don’t even dream about going around on a bicycle and buses are unreliable and crowded). You could probably get a used one for about Rs15K to Rs 20K. I am guessing over a year or so you will lose about Rs 2-4K in value depending on how well you bargain! The low end scooters like a kinetic honda or easy to operate and friendly on the wallet. They will cost you about a rupee per kilometer to operate. Clothes will run anywhere from Rs 500 and up for a decent outfit. I was in india recently and we bought some sets of salwar/kumiz (which will be the most conevenient thing for you to wear) and a nice cotton set was about Rs 800 and up. Traveling around india on a train is relatively inexpensive if you go by second class (could ba compared to cattle car on some trains)…but can be a decent experience on others (fares from indore to major cities : Mumbai(Bombay)/Delhi…about Rs400 each way, Calcutta (now Kolkota?)/Chennai(Madras) will be around Rs500 each way) Travling around in A/C sleeper will probably be three times as expensive) You may be eligible for rail-travel concession because you are a teacher (about 75% concession), which but I am not sure how the fact that you are from UK affects that. When traveling finding decent places to stay will be quite expensive…a lot of the decent places (which you would consider mid-tier in the west…like a days inn) charge comparable rates…so rates will be about Rs1500 a night and up. (You really should avoid the cheaper places. We stayed at one on a trip about 3 years ago and heard somebody trying to get into our room at about 6:00 a.m. I found a hotel employee lurking outside the door when I opened the door. Needless to say, I checked out that morning) Like somebody else said, unless you are bringing in cash from outside you could find yourself skimping a lot. Many of the local residents will be very curious about why you are there, and why you don’t have a husband etc. It is their way of sizing you up. Only through interactions with them, you will quickly learn how to deal with such questions. My only advice is that you are open with them but that doesn’t mean you bare your soul. It will be nice if your sponsor plays a role in introducing you to the local conditions. From the brief comments you have made so far my sense is that family could be a "rich" one for Indian standards. If I were you, I will make some arrangements for some subsidies from home on a regular basis. Josi

Few comments: Once you get used to Indian mores you will be fine in India. I wonder if there are any British expatriates group in India. Perhaps 55 years ago you will find such groups all over India but things may be different now. India is like a continent. If you have an opportunity, make it a point to travel to other parts of India. My sense is you will learn conversational Hindi and it will come handy to travel by economic modes like trains (II class). South India is quite different from the area where you will be but it will be worth a trip. Enjoy your experience in India.

My opinion. Rs. 3000/- is low. Who has provided this opportunity to you ? Usually private schools pay upwards of Rs. 9,000/- for good teachers. As for safety, wear skirts below the knee and do not travel alone after dark. — Raj

I would bet that you will be just fine in India! The Indians are very decent people and will treat you much as you treat them, or according to your behaviour. Dress modestly, in local style, and behave respectfully and you there is a good chance you will end up loving India, like so many other Europeans have come to do. Myself I am a Swedish male who have spent about 36 months in India and I love it more than I can say. I have never been to Indore though. Moneywise it all depends on your habits. But I would think that if you add another 100$ or so per month you would be very comfortable.
