newbie question about metformin
Question:
If it were me, I would definately participate in the study. Not only will you get free treatments, but you will get "extra-special" attention that is usually required for such studies. I work for a major drug company and know that when these studies are done the patients are very carefully monitored the whole time. I know this is a stupid question, but what is TTC? I have been on Clomid before, but did not ovulate while on it and it made me slightly crazy.

TTC is the abbreviation of Trying To Conceive.

Those abbreviations we tend to use can be confusing. Go to my PCO terms page to see what some of these abbreviations mean and if you know one I don’t have, please e-mail me. http://pages.ivillage.com/bh/cystercat/PCOTERMS.html ^—^ Cathy { ‘ . ‘ } ` "Those who play with cats must expect to be scratched." Hello everyone! I am new to this group, having only discovered it tonight. I was diagnosed with pco in 1993, conceived successfully in 97 after pergonal and metrodin. I am only now finding out about met, why is that? I called my OB/GYN and asked him about it, he said that he had never heard of the drug. My RE is doing a study on met/clomid, do you all think I should participate in the study or try to get my RE to give me met? I am really disappointed in my gyn, I know he has lots of patients, but you would think they would keep up with this stuff. When did metformin get FDA approval? Thanks for your help jill

Back in 1993, doctors weren’t prescribing Met for PCO. This is a relatively new thing and a lot of doctors still won’t do it. > I called my > OB/GYN and asked him about it, he said that he had never heard of the drug. Well, you’d think your OB would at least know about Met since it is a drug used to treat Type II Diabetes. Maybe he’d know what you meant if you called it by its trade name, Glucophage. It has been approved by FDA for the treatment of Type II Diabetes, but NOT PCO. When a doctor prescribes Met for PCO, it is considered "off label" use. This is probably why so many doctors are reluctant to write a script for it. Now as to the question about whether you should just take Met from your RE or participate in the study, I can’t answer that. It’s possible you could take the Met and ovulate all on your own. Then again, you may need Clomid. You don’t say whether you’re TTC or not. Be sure and read the guidelines of the study. Some don’t want you TTC while in their study. Also, if I weren’t TTC, I wouldn’t want to expose myself to the Clomid unnecessarily. — Nicole ===> remove "devnull" from my address to reply <===
