Pregnancy

Question:

Well I did the Dr. Atkin’s diet 16 days before my class reunion, lost 16 lb.. on the induction diet, got back into my high school dress size!!! I moved to the ongoing weight loss phase, and lost a total  of 26lbs. and am 4 lb. from the high end of my ideal weight for my height. Well, I found out I am pregnant, and so I know Ketosis is dangerous, I went off the diet completely.  However, I feel awful.  I am going onto the maintenance diet today. Anyone else experience pregnancy on the Atkin’s diet?  I get gestational diabetes, and his maintenance diet is very similar to the diabetic diet my doctor put me on.  I am hoping it will eliminate or reduce the severity of the gestational diabetes.  I am also 20lbs lighter than I was with the last pregnancy, due to the diet, which my physician said would also benefit this condition. Thanks for your thoughts

Response:

According to Dr Atkins himself..(from his AOL chat the other night) he said that doing the Maintenance level of the diet is just fine for pregnancy. Pammers Anyone else experience pregnancy on the Atkin’s diet?

size!!! Way cool! I moved to the ongoing weight loss phase, and lost a total  of 26lbs. and am 4 lb. from the high end of my ideal weight for my height.

Congrats. Well, I found out I am pregnant, and so I know Ketosis is dangerous, I went off the diet completely.  However, I feel awful.  I am going onto the maintenance diet today.

Atkins Maintenance is a much better idea than "off the diet completely" (which I take to mean "back to sugar-laden ’standard’ American diet").  Eat enough "good carbs" (veggies, fruit, legumes, whole grains, dairy) to stay out of ketosis, but don’t go back to "bad carbs" (the "anything white" rule).  Your baby can’t possibly need that stuff, it will only hurt both of you. Anyone else experience pregnancy on the Atkin’s diet?

I haven’t experience, yet, but that is my pregnancy plan.  Stick around and maybe we can get a few more pregnant low-carbers here to exchange ideas. I get gestational diabetes, and his maintenance diet is very similar to the diabetic diet my doctor put me on.  I am hoping it will eliminate or reduce the severity of the gestational diabetes.

It should. I am also 20lbs lighter than I was with the last pregnancy, due to the diet, which my physician said would also benefit this condition.

That’s true, too. Good luck, Orit in Israel 156 (3-Jan-99) / 108 / 110 (9-July-99), Atkins — Posting from DejaNews because my newsfeed’s slow again. Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Get your self a copy of "Sugar Busters". It is a moderate level low-carb diet that does not utilize ketosis. It should have enough variety to insure that you and your baby get the vitamins and nutrients you need while helping to control those insulin spikes. It won’t control the hunger though so you’ll have to practice controlling your appetite. Talk to your doctor with a copy of the book in your hand (after having read it so you can correct any misconception he/she may have) and ask their opinion about you trying it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well I did the Dr. Atkin’s diet 16 days before my class reunion, lost 16 lb.. on the induction diet, got back into my high school dress size!!! Congrats Iron Maiden. I’m at 38 weeks pregnant now. I credit the LC WOE for mine since i have PCO.  I’m not as good as i should be, (Actually I half expecting to have to deal with GD, but luckily, my GTT results came back fine).  For carbs I eat mostly whole grain breads, very little fruit (I don;t like most fruits), LC veggies and try to avoid pasta.  Unfortunatly i have a wicked sweet tooth that I will have to get under control. But with a skinny DH and 4 yo at home, the stuff is usually in the house. And they both don;t hear the buggers calling thier names. It’s amazing how long sweets stay around my house when I’m not eating them.  They can use them for the occasional treat. Actually, I have more trouble at work than at home. I’m lucky I’m not a nighttime TV muncher. Work closely with your OB/GYN and have them consider you for going to maintenance levels of carbs versus a more traditional eating plan. Only you and your doctor know what your baby and you need at this time. Congrats! We had a thread on this recently, jhere is a link to my thoughts: http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=106r733pfnm4a72%40corp.supernews… — As you accelerate your food, it takes exponentially more and more energy to increase its velocity, until you hit a limit at C.  This energy has to come from somewhere; in this case, from the food’s nutritional value.   Thus, the faster the food is, the worse it gets.                – Mark Hughes, comprehending the taste of fast food

Hi Kerri Congratulations on your pregnancy!  There is Yahoo group called "Pregnant Atkids" – it’s for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive while lowcarbing.  They have plenty of information on ketosis, weightloss and LC during pregnancy. — Tara Mum to Madison 28 March 2004 – my 29th birthday www.dazzled.com/lowcarb – my homepage New Zealand

Kerri, My wife was on Atkins when she became pregnant.  She basically switched from OWL to Maintenance.  She does get the majority of her carbs from fruit and veggies. Her doctor bascially told her that ketosis is the only thing the baby doesn’t like. Of course, consult your own doctor! And Congratulations!! FF Need low-carb recipes? Visit www.triadnc.net/recipes/

Congratulations!  First celebrate with the lucky father-to-be (in a non-alcoholic fashion).  Then make sure you take your prenatal vitamins and get sufficient sleep and exercise and eat your vegetables.  Enjoy the attention.  :-) Take care, Carmen
