Pregnancy and Keytones Question

Question:

Thank you Debbie and K in Cali! My Dr did tell me to stay low carb since I have Tyupe II as well as PCO and that the reason so many of her pregnant patients gained too much weight was the "Best Odds Diet" most often prescribed for pregnancy was just way too carby. I am not really trying to lose weight, but I feel soooo sick eating carbs.  I will try adding fruit.   I started doing the fiber subtraction method to add more carbs like Tempeh and beans.  I’M STILL IN KETOSIS!  Gee, think I outta grab a Snickers bar?  Oh wait, I’m pregnant, make that Snickers andDill Pickles… Just kidding!  Thanks for all your support and encouragement! Hugs! SRJ

Response:

Fruit might help. Why not think "original human diet" and eat the kinds of carbs that are available in the wild.  That would be food and some starchy root vegetables.  Sweet potatoes are a very healthy carb and one that humans have eaten for a long time.  Carrots and tomatoes are also good carbs for you to eat.  Since you need a lot of calcium, why not eat some of the higher carb cheeses? You might also try some Beano to help you digest carbs if you have lost the enzymes. (I posted about this yesterday, and it did help me.) — Jenny *Sorry about the lack of email address but I’m up to here with spam :<

Thanks Jenny!  I have been eating fruit today  and still remain in ketosis! Isn’t it funny how, when trying to lose weight I had to fight to stay in even mild ketosis.  Now, not wanting  to be there keep seeing the purple get darker and darker… I will add the maters and sweet taters and see if that helps! Thanks again, SRJ

Response:

Hi SRJ, I am glad that your doctor supports your diet, that is so important.  I really like beans too and they don’t seem to make me feel bad like grains and other starches do. talk to your doctor about this, and ask if following the SUGARBUSTERS low carb would be ok with him/her! i was talking to my OB-GYNE about low carb, during my post op visit, and asked what he does with his pregnant mothers.   he said SUGARBUSTERS is the way to go! DO US ALL A FAVOR AND USE YOUR KILLFILE! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am 5 months pregnant and need to be careful about weight gain.  I am Type II, insulin resistant and took 131 lbs off Atkins and don’t want to get too heavy during prenancy.  I was on bedrest for 6 weeks for complications and my church feed us many meals, I could not even shop!  I was forced to eat caseroles and rice and shudder…carbs, carbs, carbs… Needless to say I gained some weight. I got back on Atkins a couple weeks ago, trying to really just feel good again (carbs make me awfully sick) and maintain a healthy weight gain pace from here on out.  BUT I checked with ketostix yesterday to discover I was 80 in dark purple the second highest rating.  Today I tried upping some carbs but remain in trace to light keytones. Is this safe for the baby?  I was supposed to gain 35 lbs and have already gained nearly 25 only in my 5th month which is more than I should have at this point…. HELP! Also, does it matter where you are in the keytone range– is slight just as bad as heavy keytones as far as possible weight loss? you mean its a bad idea to follow a VERY LOW CARB diet in pregnancy right? READ AND POST, EVERYDAY! SRJ, Another thought, if you are having problems eating starches to knock yourself out of ketosis, you might try taking a Beano pill with them. We lose certain enzymes needed to process starches on this diet, which seems to be what makes us feel sick when we eat them. When I experimented withe Beano it elminated the gastrointestinal distress from eating carbs. — Jenny *Sorry about the lack of email address but I’m up to here with spam :<

Thanks Jenny I finally broke a 5-day major ketosis state last night.  It took over 90 carbs to do it too!  Including half a package of creamcheese, some crackers and a handful of cereal.  Fruit had not done it, bread had not done it and beans had not done it!  Odd, the goal of Atkins is to get into ketosis and I used to long to be in the darkest purple.  Now preggers I could not get out of it for a week!  I dropped 6 lbs. which is not good. I guess I will really have to work harder to find that happy place of enough carbs to stay out of ketosis but not so many I don’t gain huge amounts of fat! Hugs, SRJ

Response:

SRJ, Just concentrate on having a nice, large, healthy baby!  The fat you gain during preganancy should come off with a combination of nursing and low carb afterwards. I had gestational diabetes during both my pregnancies and gained over 40 lbs each time. Because of the diabetes, I had large babies (9 lbs). But they were both extremely healthy and have grown up to be fine healthy kids. My diabetes went away after each pregnancy as soon as the hormones of pregnancy ended and I was able to lose enough weight to be happy with my body afterwards. My son, who is now a football player, gained a pound a week for 14 weeks nursing, which certainly helped get some of that stored fat off! — Jenny *Sorry about the lack of email address but I’m up to here with spam :<

Well there are a couple others out there that I know of  - Wendy and Connie, don’t know if either are still lurking, but I have seen Connie show up in the LC chat at chat.talkcity.com on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings – but I have not been there lately myself. 9:00 PM EST is too late for me. LOL. — Debbie Cusick I plan to be a procrastinator some day if I ever get around to it. Check out the asdlc FAQ at: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc

Atkins style lowcarbing is not the best thing you can do during your pregnancy.  If you want to avoid gaining weight but still want to basically lowcarb, try adding fresh fruits to your diet.  That would be my suggestion. BUT TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.  He/she is probably aware of your weight history (and he/she isn’t you need to tell ‘em) and will be in a better position to help you. Best wishes, K in Cali
