A person in dire need of help….
Question:
Hi. I am new to your group here(but not to the "diet" world). I am feeling most desparate right now and felt the need to reach for some help. A little background may help to provide some insight. I am a 32 yearold female. I have been very heavy all of my life starting very young, like 2 years old or something. I am now about 462 lbs. I started the Atkins program on 5/15/00. I lost 5 lbs the first week, 2 the second and none the third and now I have gained 2 lbs back! I stayed on Induction for fear of gaining weight, but it didn’t seem to do any good anyway. The swellings in my legs went down the first week but is now back. I am very desparate to loose the weight for my health and to have children. I have followed the diet perfectly(I thought). Not one morsel of forbiden food has passed these lips! I have quit using Equal(in case it is the problem), no caffeine, I drink a goodly amount of water and took my vitamins and sups pretty good. I really want to do this. My next step is gastric bypass which I don’t want to do, but if I can’t do this, then I don’t feel I have a choice. I can’t stand this body any longer…the restrictions, the aches and pains. I want to live, not exist. Before you buy.

Boo you’re going great. It’s only natural to retain a little water now and then, which is probably what that 2 lbs. is about. A lot of us females retain water, especially in the second half of our cycles. I always retain 3-4 lbs. the second half of my cycle and then it whooshes off when my period starts. Otherwise, you are doing quite well. 2 lbs a week is a good rate to lose at. It’s also normal to sometimes go a week or two without losing. These plateaus eventually do break and you get a whoosh of loss. That’s just your body holding on to water while it adjusts to the fat loss. You’re doing great. Give yourself a pat on the back. My initial thought is that you are not eating enough. The general rule is 10 cals/lb of current body weight for reduction (depending on activity level). Eating too far below maintenance calorie levels will slow down your metabolism and slow weightloss. Congratulations on starting the LC WOL and your initial loss. I wish you well in your journey along The Path. Blake

Hi. I am new to your group here(but not to the "diet" world).
The nice thing about these groups is that here, you’re probably not the fattest person in the room. That alone is worth the visit. There is a *lot* of good info on here – your best bet is to check in as often as you can and read any thread that looks interesting to you. Many others will have gone through what you’re going through, and will have a perspective that may help you. I am a 32 yearold female. I have been very heavy all of my life starting very young, like 2 years old or something.
I was 13 pounds at birth and never looked back. 8-) I am now about 462 lbs.
Do you have a scale that can acurately weigh you? I ask because many stop being accurate in the neighbourhood of 300lbs, and you said ‘about 462′. I started the Atkins program on 5/15/00.
A month in, with little to show. Hmmm… Let me ask you this: *aside* from the lack of weight loss have you been noticing a difference? Have you been sleeping better? Have you had any negative side effects like dizziness? I lost 5 lbs the first week, 2 the second and none the third and now I have gained 2 lbs back! I stayed on Induction for fear of gaining weight, but it didn’t seem to do any good anyway.
Did you do a bodyfat calculation? but is now back. I am very desparate to loose the weight for my health and to have children.
I applaud your efforts to lose weight, but I’m curious about this last point about having children. Are you worried about not being physically able to care for them, or does you doctor think it would be a risk? I have followed the diet perfectly(I thought). Not one morsel of forbiden food has passed these lips! I have quit using Equal(in case it is the problem), no caffeine, I drink a goodly amount of water and took my vitamins and sups pretty good.

Response:
462 lbs – what’s your goal weight? If it’s near 150 lbs then you need to relay how much water your drinking? I recommend 150 ounces per day Please relay if you are drinking plain water or some type of flavored water drink like Crystal light. How are you seasoning your foods? salt or Morton’s half salt or No-salt? I think you need to eat more than what you are currently consuming. try adding 2 additional snack meals like chicken strips mid morning and burger pattie with cheese in the early afternoon. Tuna and mayo makes a good snack also. Throwing yourself into starvation will only cause the vicious cycle to continue… good luck GN

A couple of things…you said you weigh 462 lbs…I guess my first concern is that you’re not eating enough and are putting yourself into starvation mode, which is where your metabolism slows way down. I started at 333 and am now down to 278 and I still am eating almost twice as much food as you are and am still losing. Your body is now a fat-burning machine and it needs enough fuel to run efficiently. Secondly, could you be nearing your time of the month? Many women gain weight around this time and if you eat anything with extra sodium in it (ie processed meats, cheese, etc.) your body decides to hang onto it–and some extra fluid with it–for dear life. There are some other good suggestions here too. Best of luck and keep us posted as to how you’re doing! Cheryl ~~~Bastard toadflax: not the result of nearsighted horny toads~~~

Absolutely! More food – that’s the key here. If you’re hungry, it just doesn’t work – and then you get irratable or tempted to "cheat". Water…lots of it too. Not flavored. And, Boo – If you can manage to choke it back – have a few big tablespoons of whipped cream. Decadent to say the least, but WOW – what a ketosis kick that is! Swimming is a great exercise when heavy because you feel so light and can move around easily – I go three times a week, and I never exercised before. Give it a try! Good luck! Blake- Would that be 10 cals x 462? EEEEKKKKK!!
No really, I usually eat until I’m not physically hungry(Not emotionally hungry, that’s a whole other side of beef :-))) Thanks for the words of engouragment! Shgabuzz- I’ve got 100lbs to go before the Doc ok’s me for weight bearing exersice, I tried water aerobics which I truly loved but the chlorine broke me out something fierce. I’ve been doing a tape called "Chair Dancing" and it really is good(but boring now) Spuddie- I’m not sure when my "time" is, I’ve not had one for 18 months! Doc says it’s because of the weight. No cysts or anything. Jason- Yeah, the weinies were a one time thing for us. It was either that or B-day cake!(it was MY bday! I didnt even tought the cake) Mike- Yes I have a special scale that goes to 500lbs. (yes it was hard to find) I got it from a company called Amplestuff (hope no one considers this spam LOL) The second day I was nauseas as heck! But I got over that. I seem to have trouble getting to sleep but I do sleep the night through now(I am an insomniac). No dizziness, no headaches related to the diet ( I have severe sinus troubles- birth defect) I’m not hungry at all. Once in a while I would trade my car for a roll or a snickers bar, but just rarely, maybe once a week. Don’t know about the bodyfat calculations. Both the Doc and I agree that it would very hard for my to bear a child at this weight, especially if there were complications. I also want to be able to take care of them. I can barely walk right now much less take care of a baby. I drink 8-9 glasses of pure water minimum daily. Then maybe some Diet Rite at supper. Dang is it sweet! Gaines Not- (love that name) I really am not hungry most of the time. I don’t know if it is the life long dieting or what. I don’t feel weak or anything. I think I am scared to eat anymore that I will unleash the appetite monster! LOL I don’t use salt of anykind. I don’t like the taste. I use black pepper and italian spice. Just plain water. Sapphire- NNOOOOOOO whipped cream! gagagagagag LOL I never could stand the stuff! hehe I love swimming but the chlorine eats me alive. I am very chemically sensitive. Yuk! No perfumes, no deoderants(yes I bathe a lot LOL) only Ivory soap yada yada. Kali- Will be giving it a look. Don’t like the farmers cheese much. Thanks guys for you support, I can’t promise that I wont come crying again. I’m a strong person, I’m just tired of the fight. (sorry for the length of the post) Before you buy.

First off, if you have not had a cycle in 18 months you are putting yourself at risk for cancer. Having cyst is only one symptom of PCOS, you can have PCOS without having cyst. Have you had your fasting insulin levels checked? Metformin (a diabetes II drug) is currently being used with great success to help promote weight loss for people that are insulin resistance. There is a great list of doctors that are the most knowledgeable at the following site: http://www.pcosupport.org/ My opinion is you have some type of endocrine illness, whether it is PCOS, insulin resistance, thyroid disease, or adrenal disease. Most people that are as heavy as you, didnt get there by overeating. Perhaps it started that way, but then insulin resistance rears its ugly head, then the calorie theory is out the window. Please consider having a fasting insulin level test (for insulin resistance), TSH, T4, Free T3, antibodies (for thyroid), then if those would turn out normal have your adrenal tested. Good luck in whatever decision you make, Kari

That is definately not enough food. I’m 185 and I eat almost twice as much. When you put yourself into starvation mode it is very easy to gain weight. Also, maybe, stick to uprocessed foods and try maybe a little walking. I know how it feels, I was once in a similar situation as you. Be patient, stick to your guns, and dont be so hard on yourself. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen. Marcy

Don’t know about the bodyfat calculations.
Well, if you have a hard time moving around then it’s fairly safe to say that your lean mass isn’t going to be a whole lot over 140 lbs or so, as a guess. The calculations are outlined in the Protein Power book, for one, and involve measuring a bunch of things and then looking your numbers up in a table to get an estimate of your bodyfat percentage. From what you’ve said here I’m going to guess that you’re going to be in the area of 65% bodyfat. You should be drinking a lot more than 8 or 9 glasses of water perday. Way more. Twice that, at *least*, at your weight. I don’t use salt of anykind. I don’t like the taste. I use black pepper and italian spice. Just plain water.
Italian spice? Do you mean basil or oregano, or do you mean a prepared product called ‘Italian Spice’? If the latter, check the ingredients – many prepared spice blends have salt. — Mike Graham Sporadically WOEful since Jan 7, 2000 320/249/250 March 20, 2000 – First goal achieved in 73 days Took a break from low-carb, restarted June 1, 2000 250/235/225 Current status. 85 pounds lost in 83 days of low-carb mikegraham at sprint dot ca, Caledon, Ontario, Canada <http://metalmangler.homepage.com

Boobunnies, welcome to this group! Please *do* come here again looking for sympathy! This is the place for that type of support. Here is my two cents, some of which is redundant from others. You have only been on this WOL for one month, that is way to early to judge results. Yes, many have spectacular starts, others do much slower. But it does work. With respect to exercise, please note that many of report that we lose without any exercise at all (including yours truly). So don’t worry that you can’t exercise at this point. With respect to Stillman, I think it is too early to be tweaking the diet. As said above, give it time. Stillman is very restrictive and might cause you to abandon this WOL all together. I agree with others that you are in fact not eating enough (hard concept to fathom, huh?). Make sure to have a generous salad both at lunch and dinner, with full fat dressing. Add a full protein snack perhaps mid afternoon (chicken strips? luncheon ham?). As to the nitrates, I would not worry about them. I don’t. Eating lunch meats and similar is what keeps me on this diet. Others report the same things. Long term effects of nitrates (on general health, not weight loss) might be an issue, but weight loss is simply more important right now. As to POUNDS, I would recommend putting away the scale for at least month. Promise yourself that time. You are *most definetely* worth it!!!!! One final word of advice: go online and order some of the really good low carb treats. My personal faves are microwave pork rinds (like you, I hated "regular" pork rinds. These are yummy.) and DaVinci syrups. I have also ordered some Doctor Diet protein bars that many rave about. Actually, one last word. Read and post often. This is the place for encouragement. Do not waist your time with the Stillman plan at this juncture. The time for Stillman will come much much much much later. I asked you a question about your goal weight, what is it? I asked you about the amount of water you ingest, how much? New question: Are you in Ketosis? if so, what are the color readings of your keto styx? What does 8-9 glasses daily mean? Are they 8 ounce glasses of water, is the glass 8 ounces and is it full or partially. Here’s the rule – 8 8 ounce glasses of water (64 ounces) for a person who is at their correct weight. add 1 8 ounce glass for every 25 lbs overweight. If your goal is 150lbs (example) then if you are currently at 462lbs we can do some math: 462 – 150 = 312lbs over your goal weight. 312lbs / 25lbs = 12.48 additional 8 ounce glasses of water ( 99.84 ounces) on top of the of the 64 ounces of base water consumption. Lets total it up 64 + 99.84 = 164 ounces (rounded number) of water, 164 / 8 = 20,5 8 ounce glasses of water per day. Find you a mug that comfortably holds 20 ounces of water and drink that full mug 8 times per day for a total of 160 ounces. Good Luck and start eating more food and drinking more water today. GN

I have no idea of what my goal weight should be. I’ve always been heavy. I am 5′6" average build. My keto stix went to moderate the 3rd day and I average 40-80, sometimes darker. I will try to follow the water advice.

It’s a weird thing. I used to wake up early and have to whiz in the wee hours, and then I’d be awake and wouldn’t be able to get decently back to sleep. GN Mike- Yes I have a special scale that goes to 500lbs. (yes it was hard I drink 8-9 glasses of pure water minimum daily. LOL Kali- Will be giving it a look. Don’t like the farmers cheese much.

Kali, After reading the posters original comments, I concluded along with quite a few others that she was not eating enough on Atkins’ plan. Her being 467lbs and currently eating less than low carbers 1/3 her weight tells me that she is doing the old "starve myself" to lose weight plan. Offering Stillman’s plan with it’s Appetite killing aspect that others have also posted occurs may just push this women’s body into starvation mode. Reading her "plea" for help, I thought it wise to be gruff so to speak to hopefully get her to not experiment with something that may restrict her to a point that she gives up on low carb altogether. GN

If you subscribe to the theory that weight loss must be slow, so be it. But do try to alert the reader when you are giving them your opinion. . .
