There are diseases caused by fat deficiency and there are diseases caused by protein deficiency but there are no diseases caused by a carbohydrate deficiency. Having said that, there are components in vegetables that we do need and eating vegetables is important. The carbs in vegetables are not why we need to eat them though. Katie. Dr. Weston A. Price spent ten years studying primitive groups in the 1930’s. It was a time when you could easily find isolated "primitive " cultures where some of the people had begun to live off modern food and others were sitll surviving on their traditional diets. Very good reading. Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Weston A. Price D.D.S. ISBN 0-87983-816-7

Sounds like the interesting chapter in Protein Power about the two native American populations living in the same general area (though separated by a few hundred years) one a farming community, one a hunter-gatherer community. In just about every measurement the farmers were less healthy. Shorter, less bone density, teeth in much worse shape, age at death much lower overall. It was quite a fascinating read. — Debbie Cusick "When I get a little money I buy books: and if any is left over I buy food and clothes. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Many native cultures farmed extensively. The exceptions were those tribes whose areas precluded agriculture, such as the paleo indians of northern Maine or those pushed out onto the relative inhospitable high plains by the westward expansion of the Anglo settlers. Even among the tribes that didn’t actively farm, roots like camas or bitterroot and a wide range of seasonal berries and fruits were gathered and stored.

One loose thread has always bothered me with North American pre-Columbian civilization. At one point there was quite a sophisitcated culture that obviously depended on agriculture, whether it was the Anasazis in the SW or the Mound Builders in the E. Then, just for a number lets say 1100 CE, they went away, and were replaced by populations who seem significantly less developed. You start to see crude, intrusive burials in the mounds, and so forth. Sort of reminds me of the bad science fiction tales of feral children living in the debris of NYC, aliens in a vanished civilization they can no longer even comprehend.

Even among the tribes that didn’t actively farm, roots like camas or bitterroot and a wide range of seasonal berries and fruits were gathered and stored. You can make the argument that agriculture was a late developement, but it was doing very well by the time the colonists arrived. Despite the mythical proportions that the story has grown to, the natives rolled out the first thanksgiving spread, including the corn and squash.
Response:
native alaskans mostly fished and hunted, with berry gathering. No farming. But I haven’t read any statistics about their longevity nor health. Currently they are quite an unhealthy population but that is with a more westernized diet. — -Beth BikeE FX, AT and rans gliss Anchorage, Alaska http://home.gci.net/~dawg/

Posted daily by Connie, but I’ve pasted it below. A Beginner’s Guide to LowCarb Living Did you know that the answer to many of your questions about the Low Carb Diet can be found on the F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions) page for the alt.support.diet.low-carb newsgroup? Try following the link below or the backup site that appears below it: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm http://people.we.mediaone.net/agross/asdlc There is a mailing list for people to receive email when the FAQ has been updated. Aaron and Rudy have put a great amount of time and expense into compiling and maintaining this site. All affiliate commissions (except for Amazon.com) are donated to a local Los Angeles charity. The Amazon.com commissions are Aaron’s sole "reward" to offset some of his costs in time and materials. Please show your appreciation by using his site to order your books and materials. Did you read the FAQ but just don’t remember if something was covered? MOST questions can be answered in the FAQ without having to read the whole FAQ. Just stick a pound sign # and the term in question after the FAQ’s URL and you will go directly to the section of the FAQ you want. For example: http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm#numbers http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm#woe will answer your question about what WOE means This will also work with the alternate site. If that does not answer your questions fully, why not try the Deja News Search Engine? You can search all news groups for past discussions on topics about low carb. You can find the Deja News Search Engine at: Alternatively, do a Deja power search Or, use the form appearing in the left margin menu of each page on the FAQ site. While it is highly recommended that all newbies read the aforementioned official ASDLC F.A.Q. before posting, the preceding sites are meant to be an adjunct and can be browsed at your leisure. We hope that you will find them helpful in your weight loss endeavor.
