Doctor's Reaction To Atkins
Question:
Mike, Thanks for the kind words and reply. However, (laughing), I don’t believe I used that dirty word!!! (toning). You’re gonna get me in big trouble if any of my mfw mates see that line. I distinctly recall saying ‘Butch up, Beyatch, do some squats!" You remember now don’t you. <grin OK, glad we got that straight. Heheh. Glad to see you back posting and doing well! — -Badger <baj7d[at]virginia[dot]edu

Ooops! Sorry about that. You get the idea though. Both of you are advocating I take up the weights, which I will do. I’ll be more careful in the future not to get you in trouble!

I’ve converted another doctor! My Dad told me yesterday that he is recommending to all of his overweight patients that they go on a low carb diet. He wasn’t so sure when I first started, but has been impressed by how well I’ve been doing. He actually told me that I haven’t looked this good since high school! Kathy B. 245/156/135 2/15/00

He was amazed at the progress I had made and I told him I had lost 25 pounds. He then informed me that since I had been in the last time which was in March I had lost 32 pounds. I felt pretty good about this but I hadn’t really started Atkins just yet.

I felt pretty good about this but I hadn’t really started Atkins just yet. He wanted to know what I was doing and I told him I was low carbing and had cut out a lot of the carbs in my diet. Now I never mentioned Atkins at anytime up to this point. He said that not all carbs are bad and that this "whole Atkins generation" went and cut out "all" carbs. I told him that it wasn’t the case and that the only time I cut carbs to bare bones was during induction and that Atkins was the diet that I was on. He mentioned that after about three weeks you begin to feel bad and have no energy. I laughed and told him of my daily regimen and I would like to put it up against anyone doing carbs. He said that obviously I had proven that wrong and that it was working for me. I actually think I had almost converted him over before we were through. He is a good doctor and I like him a lot. Plus he is from St. Paul, Minnesota originally so he’s a Vikings fan. That always helps!
Anyway he thought all my readings were great. He said my LDL was a little high but was nothing to worry about with my lifestyle the way it is. He was encouraged and never tried to talk me out of doing Atkins. Just focus on the complex carbs with fiber. A good visit overall. I even noticed they had a PSA test done with the blood work. It was good too. And for us guys approaching 50 we like PSA tests. Sure beats the other method of prostate examination!
Just thought it was interesting how all I did was mention LC and the first thing he said was Atkins. Some prejudices die hard!! — Mike, The Kansas Viking 210/185/175 Atkins 7/01/00 http://midusa.net/~vikings1/index.htm

Thanks Tina. Right now I am just trying to not gain any weight because of the holiday season. I have been maintaining but with a struggle here and there the last month. That is great news Mike. I remember listening to Dr.Atkins on the radio around ‘84-’85. The press and their expet Dr.s treated him and LC like a criminal. It’s great to hear that 15 years later Dr.s are finally saying Hmmmmmm! It really is great. I was worried that he would do this rant on me and he didn’t. Like he was saying, not all carbs are bad. He advocates some pasta but like he was telling me it’s the way people eat pasta the hurts them. He said that most people don’t eat breakfast then have a little something for lunch. By the time supper comes around they are famished and eat this huge plate of pasta. (spaghetti in my case) Then they just lay there on the couch and it turns to fat. I had to laugh because that described me to a tee. I could eat a ton of spaghetti of an evening. Mike, that was a great post and gives me a segue to talk about my next check up, but before I do, let me say, you sure showed him what is possible and that if you do it right low carbing does not limit your physical abilities. I’ve been to your page and chatted with you about your weight training and can confirm you have done a marvelous job, and your weight training is super. Did you ever find a new gym?
I haven’t got to another one yet but am planning on working at home this year after the first of Jan. I did think of our conversation after talking to the doctor. He made the suggestion that you did when we talked last. He said maybe instead of losing more weight that I should now concentrate on adding weight training and shaping and toning. You are both right of course but I would like to lose another 10 of fat and maybe gain it back as muscle. Now THAT is easier said than done!!
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Next week I go in for strength testing as I enter a study to measure the effect of some experimental therapy designed to normalize, or optimize the body’s natural hormone balance. The Doc was just amazed that since the time of the last visit, already having leaned out quite a bit in the last year that when I walked in last Friday, my weight was down another 15lbs, and I looked fine. He said ‘what have you been doing’, almost incredulous, and I just said ‘oh, eating clean, working out a little’, and smiled. At any rate, they’ll be testing my strenght on some ergo machines and the bike and snorkel. I’ve always had some naturally good attributes, with all the training I’ve done over the years, and lately discovered that even with my layoff, I’ve come back to better than PR lifts in the Leg Extension and the back and Bicep machines. So now I’m psyched to also make a good showing when they test me, heh, like wondering if anyone had ever broken their equipment, <innocent grin: "gee doc, guess I didn’t know my own strength". My plan is to get an idea of the type of equipment they use, and then specifically train to be good at that movement or in that muscle group. At the baseline event, I’ll just kinda use 3/4 power, and then with the regimen and training, I’ll have the goal to really tear up, showing them that LCing is not a deterrent in either strength or endurance. Thanks for the great post and the motivation to really go for it! LCers rule!! — -Badger
