Hi — metformin question
Question:
I’ve been taking metformin for almost a year now and I can honestly say that it has had a profound affect on the relationship I have to food. I no longer wake up iwth blood sugar on the floor, starving at 3 am like I used to. I also do not get the lows at 3 o’clock in the afternoon like I used to, unless ofcourse I just didn’t get a good night’s sleep. It seems to balance out things. I also don’t gain weight quite as easily as I used to. Hope that helps. Hello everyone… I was diagnosed with PCOS today and my doctor wants to put me on metformin. He explained why and I agree with him but I was wondering if anyone here has been on a low carb diet & taking metformin. If so what were the effects? TIA, ~gracious~ — ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I don’t know aabout low-carb as I haven’t tried it yet but you should be prepared for the possible side-effects of Metformin! I’ll start by saying that they do disappear but for the first few days you may feel nauseous, have diarrohea and associated stomach ache/cramps. For the first few days you may well feel absolutely awful and spend a lot of time on the loo! Gradually, your body will start to get used to it so that a few weeks later you will feel pretty much ok. Its also important to take Metformin after eating in order to minimise the above effects. Emma "gracious" <kitten…@phoenixdsl.com> wrote in message

Don’t scare her off. There are many good benefits from metformin. As with anything you give your body. It takes time to adjust. Many of us reap the benefits. Weight loss, menses and more. Donna

I have actually had no side effects, good or bad. I did start on a lower dose and have increased my iron intake to counter what I consider the worst of the side effects, diarrhea. I am not on the fully prescribed dose yet. I am planning that for next week. Cindy Donna <glen.rem…@rcn.com> wrote in message

Hi, From the PCOS list, it seems to be a majority opinion to try one of them first, get used to it, then introduce the other. Most did metformin first, got over the first month or so, then went on to try low carbing. I would vary the metformin. It works for some just before eating, during and after.
Good luck! Victoria "gracious" <kitten…@phoenixdsl.com> wrote in message

Well – I’ve maintained a normal period for 3 years now - will metformin alter my cycle? Thanks for the answers so far
