Is anybody NOT lowcarbing to treat PCO/insulin resistance

Question:

I have been on glucophage for 3 1/2 months and have been exercising 5 times a week for the last five weeks.  I also began eating low fat and more fiber because of elevated cholesterol.  I did see an improvement on my triglycerides as a result of taking the meds.  I am losing weight now and definitely inches from the added exercise.  I think the glucophage is making it easier to lose weight. sha

Are any of you that are taking metformin begun having regular cycles (if you didn’t already have them?) Karen — ———- Brightest of Blessings

Me!  I am now like clockwork.  It’s quite unbelievable for me.  I never had anything close to regular periods on my own before being on Metformin. Barbara K. Taverner <onem…@webspan.net> wrote in message

Well, the Zone diet is a moderate carb, healthy, and balanced diet.   If you can’t handle low carbing it, which I absolutely can’t, then consider the Zone diet.  I do a modified Zone diet (a little more protein, a bit fewer carbs) and it has helped a lot and I don’t feel deprived at all. Barbara

BAgnew <bag…@mail.utexas.edu> wrote in article <74s3kk$im…@geraldo.cc.utexas.edu>… Barbara, Funny you should mention "the Zone" cause I just orderd the book from Amazon.com, and both my hubby and I(hubby could stand to lose around 60 lbs or so, is a big sweets eater and pop drinker , and has diabetes and HPB in his family) will most likely be doing it as soon as the book comes or at the very latest, after Xmas .  I think I could easily handle the Zone since I am not a terribly heavy carb eater and LOVE fruits & veggies. I looked at Atkins but it was jsut too damn restrictive for me. I want a WOE that I can use easily and enjoyably for the rest of my life. Thanks, good luuk, and Happy Holidays! Maggie

I started Rez in September, lost 4 pounds in October, 5 in November, despite some huge emotional losses, and the start of holidays–meaning my main menu consisted of fast food and pie…. Didn’t loose on low carb for six weeks. Jaeme

For those of you tring the low carb.  There is a new cookbook out by Fran McCullough  The Low-Carb Cookbook.  She introduces herself in the begining as having been diganosed with both insulin resistance and pcos.  I just got it this weekend, but it looks pretty good. I was diganosed with pcos 7 years ago and have gone through many different treatments of the symptoms.  I go for my insulin test on Monday. Candi

I also picked up the McCullough Low-Carb Cookbook last month and am thrilled to find good recipes for low-carb eating.  I had Lemon Ricotta Cheese with Rasberry Sauce for dessert tonight!     –Marsha

I will probably not be lowcarbing it.   I am a fairly new diagnosis and have not yet worked out a treatment plan.   But, lowcarb is not a natural way of eating for me.  I am a fairly lowfat veggies/grains/pasta type with a little meat/dairy here and there and very little sugar/fruit/sweets.   I tried high protein/lowcarb once and had adverse effects, and it wasn’t my "natural" eating style.   I don’t think I could stay on anything that made me deprive myself for any length of time and be sucessful with it. We’ll have to see what happens with treatment… Tracy ************************************************************************** ***********        "Minds are like Parachutes…… They only function when OPEN" ************************************************************************** ***********

I only just heard about this low-carb diet stuff.  My doctor’s never said anything about it.  I started researching on the web today though.  Planning to go to the bookstore this weekend and see if I can find a good book on it. Mary: I’ve picked up a pretty decent book on the low-carb thing, called "Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution," by Robert C. Atkins.  ISBN is 0-380-72729-3.  It’s a small paperback, and I think I got it from Amazon.com. Although it seems as though low-carbing is a very effective cure for the symptoms of PCOS/insulin resistance, but  are there any ladies on here NOT low-carbing to treat it? Although I am considering lowcarb myself both to help w/the symptoms of whatever is that I have (be it PCOS or Hypothyroidism or both)  and to lose weight, I was curious as to whether it could be controlled by medicine such as Metformin/Resulin alone and a normal diet(menaing healthy and balanced).   Luck, health  and fertility to all Maggie

I haven’t tried the medicine yet, but I can vouch that a low-fat, wellbalanced diet has not helped at all.  At 5′6" I’m 250 lbs and the needle on the scale does not budge not matter what I do.  I should mention, though, that I haven’t tried the low-carb diet some cysters have had success with yet (I’m looking to find a vegetarian version). Take care, Claudia

Response:

I’m not low carbing.  Of course I’m not high carbing either.  Just trying to eat a balanced diet.  I am on Metformin (for 3 mths now) and have lost 8 pounds with no change in diet or exercise from what I did before the Metformin. :) God Bless You  <*(((><       Carrie   ;o)~    from Oklahoma Carrie’s Home Page (PCOS) http://hometown.aol.com/cbraly2000/home.index.html For info. on treatment of PCOS with the drug Metformin go to this site… http://www.ivf.com/pcostreat.html
