low carb

Question:

I should have pointed out that that was how I had to do it.  As soon as I added salad greens, my weight loss stopped.  But frankly my digestive system was so stopped up, I had to eat some fiber or eat dynamite!  Not fun! I confess I did enjoy eating all those BBQ pork rinds.. still have a couple bags around somewhere.

Response:

I love proteins and meats –  I really do, I do love my carbs as well though. I think I’ve hit plateau – so maybe it’s just a shake up I need…thanks for the info all. — Dave Started 242lbs (17.4) Currently 222.5 (15.125) 10% 218.7 (15.8 St) Goal 173 (12.5 St) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – "No dairy, fruits or veggies, breads, rice or pasta.  God forbid any sugar. I mean, NONE of the above!" Hmmm, I low-carbed for 14 months, and ate fruit, and veggies every day…just low glycemic ones, and lost 90 lbs. For some, with insulin disfunction (like diabetics, prediabetics, or women with PCOS) LC really is a viable option.  Even Weight Watchers says that their diet is not suitable for Diabetics unless your doctor (for some reason) says it’s ok. NOW that said.  I love Weight Watchers!!!  I was an on-camera spokeswoman for them for two years, and I wouldn’t have done it.  Little did I know at the time that my PCOS required that I make very specific changes in my diet that the WW plan didn’t account for…now I know how to adjust it on my own… For more information on LC diets (not just the popular ones, but the "science behind them") you can check out www.lowcarb.org. I’ve done the low-carb diet twice in my life, and lost about 10 lbs both times.  Then I hit a plateau and couldn’t lose any more, no matter how long I stayed on the diet.  Eating low-carb (for me) meant all the meat, cheese and eggs I wanted, but that was ALL.  No dairy, fruits or veggies, breads, rice or pasta.  God forbid any sugar.  I mean, NONE of the above! Naturally, as soon as I went off the diet, the weight came right back, because I hadn’t changed anything.  The great thing about WW is that it encourages healthy eating, and NOTHING is forbidden.  It’s a plan you can use to lose weight, then use the new eating habits you’ve developed to keep it off. The low-carb diet sounds attractive because of the unrestricted amounts of protein you can have, but it’s very unhealthy and doesn’t work in the long term.  (Again, that’s me.  You may hear different stories from different people.)

I’m no expert , Dave, but it seems as tho a good balance of protein / carb with some healthy fat included as well……. lots of veggies & fruit, whole grain breads, cereals, etc.. keep a lower selection of starches such as potatoes , pasta, corn, etc, reasonable amounts of meat… lots of water. — ~ Missy ~ Alberta , Canada) 223 ( W.W.start) / 194.4 / 190 -Mini-goal #7… Ultimate Goal : 130… Total gone : 28.6  lbs……  :o)

Many moons ago… I followed CAD (carbohydrate addict’s diet) – a low carb  program.  Loss about 43 pounds.  Started regaining as soon as I started eating carbs with more than one meal… metabolism was a little out of whack.    Everything’s okay now though. — Life is what you make it!!! Me too! I lost about 10 lbs. I kept it off before I started WW, but I just didn’t like it. Now I find I should have carbs every day, but of the complex whole-grain variety. I’ve cut back on sugary refined baked stuff. I enjoy oatmeal or whole grain cereal for breakfast, or lately a half-bagel spread with Laughing Cow light cheese, and some fruit! Carbs are our friends; they contain fiber to fill us up and Vitamins B and E! Hi Nick,   I too went low carb for awhile and lost about 10lbs.  It was too strict for me to stay with it for any length of time and now my system can’t handle milk or wheat, not sure if that is due to low carb or general aging.   WW is alot friendlier.  No food is restricted and the weight comes off about the same pace.  After the initial first week or two it is about 1-2 lbs per week. Response:

Yep, did the Atkins diet and lost about 10 lbs. over the course of 4 weeks, then stopped losing any weight (story of my life).  As an added bonus, I started getting mysterious bruises for no apparent reason (a vitamin C tablet daily seemed to get rid of that) and (men, you may want to avert your eyes for this bit) I’d get my period days early or in the middle of my cycle and it would last for two weeks.  I’m on the pill, so this just shouldn’t happen.  What frightened me is the fact that I wasn’t the only one who had these same side effects – not by a long shot.  No one could explain why this diet caused these reactions, but many could chime in with "me too". Basically, it works for some people, but doesn’t for others.  I’m just not too keen on a diet that actually recommends that you take a plethora of vitamins (read the back of Dr. Atkins’ book) to supplement your diet while low carbing.  If I’m not getting my vitamins from actual food, I don’t believe this is a good thing.  I must say though, it was rather nice to be eating full fat creams, butter, cheese, nuts, and other high fat foods for a while. ;) There is a support news group for low carb dieting (I think it’s alt.support.diet.low-carb) and they’re quite good about answering any questions. Wow, ask a short question, and I give you a long winded answer. ;) — Cheers, Petal, in the UK (WW At Home) 187 – January/99 163 – started WW June/01 152 – this week 140ish – goal
