low carb and pregnancy?(child and pg ment)
Question:
I’m gestational diabetic, before I was pregnant I was diagnosed with PCO and was on Actos for 3 months. My nutritionist says that carbs are the enemy when it comes to blood sugar being high, but that you do need some while you are pregnant. I have 3 meals and 3 snacks every day. At meals I have 45g of carbs and at snacks I have 30g of carbs. It’s lower, I think, than a traditional diet, but still not Atkins worthy. (BTW, I also have to take insulin shots 2x per day.) Also, they should wean you off the metformin. I stopped at about 12 weeks after gradually reducing the dose and I was fine. I’ve heard from all the nurses and doctors that oral insulin reducing drugs can be harmful to the baby if taken for a long time. Kathy 33 weeks Pregnant after trying for 5 years. Britt, congratulations on your pregnancy. I am the mother of a Metformin Miracle myself, after 4 years TTC and a m/c. I actually had a net loss of weight when I was pregnant, ie. I weighed less after the baby was born than when I got pregnant. (I stayed on Met the first 10 weeks of the pregnancy, I don’t know if that made a difference or not.) I’ve since gained back to my prepregnancy weight.
No, it isn’t safe to low carb while pregnant. You can do a diabetic or moderate carb diet though. Just make sure it is well balanced. Something else to consider. Nutritional supplements that help reduce IR like Vit E, Zinc, ALA, etc…. Make sure you check with your OB first before taking any of these though. Good luck. Despina PS- For more info on nutritional supplements to take, one source to check is the book, "Syndrome X". – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Ibybaskets wrote: > I have PCOS and have been on 1500 mg of metformin for months was low carbing > high protein had first IVF after 3 years ttc and many clomid cycles iui’s etc > well Im a little over 5 weeks pg My first positive Beta in over 5 years (DD > just turned 5) My problem is I stopped the low carbing about a week after > transfer and now Im gaining weight and I know it isn’t from the pregnancy yet > what should I do is it safe to low carb while your pg?
