met weight loss w/out lc??

Question:

I’m feeling a little discouraged.  It seems from the posts here that most of you who have lost weight on Metformin have lost weight because you’re also low-carbing.  Is that true?  Please let me know if there are people out there who have lost significant weight without low-carbing–when I tried lc I got very sick!  If you HAVE lost weight on Met without low carbing, how long were you on the Met before the weight loss started?  What dose were/are you taking? I’ve just been on the full 1500/day for a week, so I guess I’m being a little impatient… Jessica

I got sick too, and then changed on how to do it.  You have to understand that carbohydrates are like an addiction.  You go cold turkey, you feel sick.  You gradually reduce, and you will be fine.  You have to do it slowly!  My suggestion is to eat normal, but cut back on sodas first.  The next step is to exchange foods high in carbs for better ones.  That means dump the potato for vegetables.  Eat more fruits.  Eat only half of the bread you used to do.  After a week you should be able to start the zone diet without any problems.   — Katharina dav…@german-usa.com 35/5.9/C0-nt/met1500/262/246

This is great advice and how I worked myself up to some lo-carbing.  If I go to a steak house, I ask for spinach and steamed veggies instead of potatoes, just little adjustments like that.  I agree, it is best to do it gradually.   <html><P ALIGN=CENTER>Cathy (to email, delete spamslam) <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/index.html">My Web </A> <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/PCOS.html">PCO page </a></P></html>

I’ve lost 47 pounds altogether.  15 pounds came off for free when I got out of control diabetes in October.  Then the out of control diabetes made me be really good because it scared me.  I was eating low fat with controlled carbs.  I usually ate 2 pieces of bread a day, cereal for breakfast and no sugar added ice cream every night and of course meat, eggs, fruit and veges.  I lost 22 pounds that way, and I lost 10 more pounds on low carb. I started taking 1000 mg of met a day when I was at approx 20 pounds loss, and I went up to 2500 mg a day at approx 30 pounds loss. I went to low carb because even on 2500 mg of met and 37 pounds of weight loss, I didn’t have my cycle back.  I’m having a 40 day cycle this time, which is alot better than before. When I started low carb it did make me feel kind of crappy, and when I went back on it after taking a week off it also made me feel crappy. I think it’s because our bodies are adjusting to burn fat rather than carbs and it takes it a bit of time to adjust. I don’t follow any specific low carb diet, I just avoid carb rich foods.  I can’t handle rules. Hi Jessica,    I lost weight on just metformin alone. I lost weight fast. I lost 20 lbs in 5 weeks. It then leveled off. I had to low carb to lose more. I needed to lose 60 lbs. The metformin gave me 20 lbs free weight loss. I did not change any of my habits especially the amount of food and exercise. Again this was for the first 5 weeks.I wonder if I was on a temporary platuea. If I had given the metformin months to work instead of weeks if it might have lost more weight. ———–== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==———- http://www.dejanews.com/       Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

Like Jessica I am curious about the dosage thing.  At what dosage level did everyone start with the weight loss?  I am only on 500 right now and working up slowly on my RE’s advice. <html><P ALIGN=CENTER>Cathy (to email, delete spamslam) <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/index.html">My Web </A> <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/PCOS.html">PCO page </a></P></html>

I lost 34 lbs in 3 months with Met 1500/day and Richard Simmons Deal-a-meal (plus exercise 3- 4 times a week). Then the weight loss stopped. I was upped to 2000 a day (I got my period!), but my weight stayed the same until I started low carbing two weeks ago: I  lost 11 lbs in the first week but nothing this past week and I am not feeling so good (lightheaded, despite potassium supplements). I am going to try going back on Deal-a-Meal for two weeks and then low carb another two weeks, etc. Maybe I can only lose weight for the first week I am on any particular regimen!  Darn this weird body o’mine. Good luck to you! That 11 pounds was probably mostly water weight.  You will gain it right back if you go back to high-carb deal a meal.  I would recommend that you try staying on the lowcarb for a while longer.  11 pounds is a lot to lose for anyone in one week and your body may just need a little while to rest before it starts losing again.   Sara soubriq…@my-dejanews.com wrote in article <7gmovf$2a…@nnrp1.dejanews.com>… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I lost 34 lbs in 3 months with Met 1500/day and > Richard Simmons Deal-a-meal (plus exercise 3- > 4 times a week). You went to low carbs too fast.  The lightheadiness is a sign for that. Increase your carbs a little and it will go away.  Most people switching from regular carb to low will feel sick.  You have to reduce slowly to avoid the associated problem. — Katharina dav…@german-usa.com 35/5.9/C0-nt/met1500/262/244
