Metformin

Question:

Hi Kat, I’ve never been on Met.  I believe that a low carb way of eating and Met. I am controlling my symptoms without meds.  My experience was that after losing 25 or so lbs I started ovulating on my own.  By the time I became pregnant I had lost 40 lbs. Now, I have a beautiful 16 month old and based on my charting temps, am having textbook cycles all on my own.  I attribute this to low carb. Sorry I can’t help with the dosages on the Met.  Have you tried alt.support.pco ? Many of the women there are on Met and doing LC so they may be able to help more…. ConnieMS

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Folks, My name is Kat, aged 33 (34 in two months) and I’m low carbing to fix my weight and my PCOS.  My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for two years now.  I’ve managed to get my doctor to prescribe me Metformin to help me conceive, but I’m unsure as to what dosage I should be taking in light of my low carb diet. I’m currently 216 pounds and need to be down to the 95 to 110 area for my small frame and 5′1" height.  Blood tests show insulin resistance. I also am hypothyroid and have ME/CFS, for which I am being treated. Can anyone recommend web sites or have experience first hand of a dosage to shoot for, the number of carbs I should allow and how to tell when I am at the right dose of metformin for me?  How long would I need to be on the Metformin, weeks, months, years? Thanks for any help! Kat

Hi Kat – My name is Kat, too, and I also have PCOS.  I don’t have any experience with Metformin, but I did lose 90lbs lowcarbing… I have alot of PCOStories on my website www.SoulCysters.com and many of the cysters discuss Metformin. Hope to see you there! Your cyster, Kat Carney www.SoulCysters.com "Women with PCOS speak from the heart"

Hello Kat, Dr Glueck states you will be on metformin forever to fix PCOS.  I seen him for 6 months and was at 2550 metformin, before I landed in the hospital.  I have hyperinsulinemia, PCOS, hypothyroid, low adrenals, and epstein barr virus (currently acute). The reason I ended up in the hospital is my lactic acid levels were high before I started metformin and Dr Glueck did not test them after I started the medication.  My lactic acid levels were extremely high when I went into the hospital.  I suppose you do know 1 in 66,000 die every year of lactic acidosis from taking metformin. Prior to starting metformin I did low carb for 18 months.  I dropped my fasting insulin levels fro 86 to 33 (normal under 20).  While on metformin, at the maximum dose, my fasting insulin levels went from 33 to 38 (my cholesterol rose, my male hormones rose, every hormone he tested went off in the wrong direction).  If you search medline you might see several studies that show metformin slows down working on pcos women after about 6 months. I am back on low carb and exercise alone.  My insulin levels have dropped from 38 to 31, an all time low for me.  I stay somewhere between 20 carbs and 60 carbs.  When I up my carbs, I insure I eat more fiber and that my carbs are low glycemic. For me, I eat low carb, high fat, and moderate protein.  I balance my omega 3 and omega 6 consumption (some studies show high consumption of omega 6 and low consumption of omega 3 might make insulin resistance worse). If you are trying to conceive you might want to look at NeanderThin, Schwarzbein Principle, or Protein Power (phase 2).  Any of these should help you lose weight but in the event you get pregnant you will be eating plenty of vegetables and some fruit. Good luck on your journey, Kari
