Hi, I’ve been lurking for a while, and thought I’d respond to this one.  First, I’ll introduce myself.  I was diagnosed with PCO in October of this year and was sent to an endo who (after lots of tests) immediately suggested Metformin. I didn’t find all of you until Dec. and it was nice to know that I wasn’t the only one out there.  I’m not diabetic and the results of the metformin have been wonderful (after the first yucky week)  I have lost 20 pounds with out any sort of dieting low carb or other wise, started ovulating on my own regularly, have stopped losing hair where I wanted hair to be, and have hair growth has slowed down in area that it shouldn’t be.  In terms of test numbers, my testosterone levels have dropped from 160 to 52. It has really been great to get into clothes that I had outgrown with out any extra effort.  I have always exercised 3-6 times a week, and ate a fairly health diet and gained weight.  For the first time in my life, my body is behaving like it ought to in regards to using food for energy instead of hoarding it in fat cell, and I give all of the credit to that to metformin. I experienced the same, and love it. — Katharina dav…@german-usa.com 35/5.9/C0-nt/met1500/262/250

That has not been my experience. We see weight loss in up to 50% of women on metformin regardless of whether they are diabetic. I think this is the real problem that MD’s are stuck on diabetes and sugar levels. This condition (PCOS) is not about sugar. It is about excess insulin secretion. AND, the increased cardiovascular risks, ie, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, increased PAI-1. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -sall…@my-dejanews.com wrote: >In article <01be8bfa$ee7e6be0$d3f4accf@vogmudet>, >  "Sara Avery" <saraba…@erols.com> wrote: >> I saw an endo for the first time yesterday and he is willing to prescribe >> Met based on my test results (LH, FSH, Testosterone, Prolactin, >> progesterone), but he told me that non-diabetics who take it usually don’t >> get the weight loss benefit of it.  I’m pretty sure there are some >> non-diabetics here who have lost on it, but could some of you confirm that >> for me?  Thanks! >> Sara >Hi, >I’ve been lurking for a while, and thought I’d respond to this one.  First, >I’ll introduce myself.      I was diagnosed with PCO in October of this year and >was sent to an endo who (after lots of tests) immediately suggested >Metformin. I saw an endo for the first time yesterday and he is willing to prescribe Met based on my test results (LH, FSH, Testosterone, Prolactin, progesterone), but he told me that non-diabetics who take it usually don’t get the weight loss benefit of it.  I’m pretty sure there are some non-diabetics here who have lost on it, but could some of you confirm that for me?  Thanks! Metformin has been used as a weight loss drug in Europe for years and chances are that alot of those people were neither diabetic or PCO.   <html><P ALIGN=CENTER>Cathy (to email, delete spamslam) <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/index.html">My Web </A> <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/PCOS.html">PCO page </a></P></html>

Congratulations, Lisa!  That’s a fabulous result.  I forgot to ask along with my question if you were lowcarbing also and if so, when did you start LCing in relation to the Met?  Thanks! I have been on Met since September, and just eat normally (not high or low card) I have been exercising regularly since id January.  I have lost about 20 pounds since September.  I am not diabetic, but am insulin resistant. :o ) God Bless You  <*(((><       Carrie   ;o)~    from Oklahoma Carrie’s Home Page (PCOS) http://hometown.aol.com/cbraly2000/home.index.html For info. on treatment of PCOS with the drug Metformin go to this site… http://www.ivf.com/pcostreat.html

Carrie- Thanks for the info:-)  Congrats on the 20 pounds lost and not having to go lowcarb!! Sara

Response:

Sara, I’ve been on Met for about three months now and have lost about 15 pounds. I’m doing a lower carb kind of diet, but feel a little hypoglycemic if I get too low.  I started exercising regularly at the "Y" just last week, so I attribute the weight loss to the Met.  Good luck on it and don’t get discouraged on those occasions when you’re walking a little faster than normal toward the bathroom.  Like they say, "this too shall pass!" I have lost 4.5 pounds (3% of my body weight) in three weeks.  I take Met 1500mg a day, low carb, and walk on treadmill 4 or 5 times a week for 45 minutes.  I have had only one night with GI effects (the first night) and was locarbing and exercising for three months beforehand with no weight loss.

Response:

Leah, Thanks and congrats on the weight loss!! Sara

Response:

Kelly, Thanks and congrats on the weight loss!  Enjoy those carbs, too:-)  I know they are gone from my life forever, but I’m glad that somebody else is still able to eat them. Sara

Sara>> I dont really low carb..but if given a choice between 2 of the same thing, I chose the low carb version…I must also say that since the Met, I have pretty much lost all of my sweet tooth –  except anything apple flavored..like apple juice.  I rarely if ever eat chocolate….my 4 pop tart a day habit is history.  Since I have no will power..I have to credit it to the Met.   Just Me,  Lisa. Response:

That’s very interesting, that the Met has curbed your sweet tooth.  Lowcarb curbed mine, so there’s some evidence IMO, that they do similar things to our bodies by very different methods.  I’m so happy not to be a sugar addict anymore! Sara

I thought it was a little strange that my endo the other day was sort of pushing the pill for me.  He asked at least twice if I wouldn’t consider going back on it and I said no both times.  (not TTC, but also not willing to put artificial hormones in my body anymore)  I thought that it was strange that as an endo he was pushing BCPs.  Has anyone else had that experience with their endo?   Sara

Response:

I had the same experience.  I don’t know for sure, but probably because "we" are not ttc, the BCP is what causes one to no ovulate, so consequently the cysts don’t form.  I really did not want to go back on the BCP because of the depression and headaches.  I had been on them for 12 years and had developed PCO while on them.  Figure that one out! <I had been on them for 12 years and had developed PCO while on them.  Figure that one out!> I would assume this must have something to do with the fact that BCP’s can raise insulin levels… Sara

Response:

My endo took me off of the BCP because it increases insulin resistance!

Response:

My point, exactly!  Why would he put me on BCPs when he knows that I’m IR???  This guy is supposed to be the best endo in town! Sara Lisa B. Strange. My R.E has just put me on Metformin, but when I asked about stopping my Diane 35, she suggested I wait another 6 months before doing that ( ps I’m ttc, but just doing it fgh) Hi from sunny australia girls.
