Don’t know about this but I used to get very short tempered when my feet got too hot. I now know that my feet getting hot was in fact a symptom that I had. [No bother now though] Pete Pete – Diagnosed 20/03/03 Type II D&E + Metformin

That’s VERY interesting! What is the book? I have one tag (5mm lon) in the groin area which I have had for as long as I can remember. A few years ago, I had one develop on my back. I had this removed about 2 years ago. My doctor noticed it when he was examining my eczema, so I asked him to remove it (the tag!)as it was a bit of a nuisance, as I kept catching it with the towel. It was about 1 cm long and 5 mm diameter. Recently I have noticed that I now have a tiny tag under each armpit… I wondered if there was some connection with eczema actually, rather than diabetes.! —

Hi there. I have PCOS, and have been on Metformin for over a year now. I’ve lost about 30lbs, but seem to have plateaued. I need to lose about 30 more lbs. I know that a low-carb would help me, but I don’t know how to do it. I don’t want to do an Atkins diet type of thing, as eating high-fat foods makes me ill. I also don’t eat red meat and pork. What I would like to do is just cut back on my carbs. What’s a good substitute when I get a carb craving? Is it OK to eat fresh fruits and veggies in larger amounts? I know they are still carbs, but they aren’t the evil refined flour and sugar carbs. I might have to stop taking Metformin, as my liver enzyme levels have my doctor concerned. I went for a bunch of blood tests, and I have an U/S tomorrow for my gallbladder. I want to at least maintain my weight loss if I have to go off Met. My suspicion is that I’ll have to have my gallbladder out, which hopefully will resolve the liver enzyme problem. Hi Kelly! I was dx with PCOS in Dec/00 and have been on Metformin ever since.. like you, I lost over 30 lbs in about 3 months and stopped.. I was able to maintain that for the past 2 years by modifying the types of carbs I eat.. eg.. eat moderate amounts of whole wheat or rye bread instead of white bread, brown rice instead of white rice, very little pasta(only as a treat once in a while), rarely potatoes, rarely sweets. This past January I decided that I wanted to lose another 20 lbs so I started to lower my carb intake even more by completely cutting out bread, pasta, white sugar, and potatoes. I eat fruit but only in the mornings because it gives me that ‘get-up-and-go’ and burns off quickly. I snack on peanuts and Atkins Advantage Bars. I make sure that I drink at least 6 or more 8oz glasses of water a day and I take a high potency multi-vitamin. I have increased the amount of vegetables I eat, as well as salad. I exercise at the gym 3x a week and try to take a walk for 1/2 an hour on non-gym days. To date I have lost an additional 12 lbs and I’m feeling great. Nothing good comes without sacrifice and believe me it is worth it! As for the gallbladder thing, I had mine removed in 1993, so I can’t comment on the effects of Metformin on the gallbladder, but I do know that high fatty foods are very hard on the gallbladder. But I do seem to recall reading somewhere that the liver CAN be affected by metformin. I had my liver checked about a year ago and everything was OK. Hope I was able to help.. good luck! Lori

Ice cream, but not the low fat kind. Believe it or not, the fat and protein slow down the glycemic response, so even with the sugar ice cream won’t cause an insulin spike. Not really good for losing weight, but good for maintaining menstrual cycles. If you’re not pregnant, you can make low carb snacks from Splenda. You can mix low fat cream cheese (or the non-dairy soy kind) with cocoa powder and splenda to make a nice chocolatey snack. > Is it OK to eat fresh fruits and veggies in larger amounts? Yes, all vegetables except potatoes and large amounts of carrots are fine. You should eat some protein with them though (sprinkle sunflower seeds or nuts on your salad, or mix in beans with your veggies, for example). Beans have carbs but the fiber and protein in them slow the glycemic response. Fruit is trickier but probably fine (I believe the worst offenders are grapes and bananas).

Cautionary notes on both soy and Splenda: Soy contains phytoestrogens. These are generally bad for PCOS people, who usually tend to be estrogen dominant already. Also, it can block the action of your thyroid, aggravating existing thyroid problems, causing them in people who don’t already have them, and just generally slowing you down. It’s made by chlorinating sugar molecules. Supposedly they pass through you unaltered, but I really don’t trust it. I like stevia, but it’s a bit expensive. I think it depends a lot of which of the lowcarb programs you’re following. Some are stricter than others. There’s a carb counter here that might be helpful: http://www.atkinsfriends.com/carbcounter.shtml . I just discovered ranch flavored almond slices. Sunkist sells sliced almonds with different coatings: ranch, cinnamon sugar, honey mustard, barbeque, etc. The ranch ones taste just like ranch flavored wheat thins (which I love but are a low-carbers "no no").

I’ve also wondered this since I’m on it as well for PCOS and have had little problems with the leg cramps associated with potassium deficiency. I don’t take any potassium supplements and I don’t use "lite salt" because I think that Spironolactone goes out of it’s way to store any potassium that you ingest so it shouldn’t be a worry. Ask your endocrinologist for a better answer of course, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to supplement potassium while on this med. That’s just my $0.02.

Hello, Spironolactone causes increased amounts of sodium and water to be excreted, while potassium loss is minimized. Spironolactone acts both as a diuretic and as an antihypertensive drug by this mechanism. Potassium (Vitamin K) supplementation (including dietary potassium) should not be administered in conjunction with spironolactone therapy. Excessive potassium intake may cause hyperkalemia in patients receiving spironolactone. Spironolactone should not be administered concurrently with other potassium sparing diuretics. Hyperkalemia may occur in patients treated with spironolactone if the potassium intake is excessive. This can cause cardiac irregularities, some of which may be fatal. Hyperkalemia may also occur even in the absence of potassium supplementation, particularly in patients with impaired renal function, elderly patients, or patients with diabetes. Consequently, no potassium supplementation should ordinarily be given with spironolactone. Hope this helps. Robert

Folks, If you’re on a potassium sparing medication take NO potassium. These medications keep the kidney from dumping potassium. If you take extra potassium it causes the potassium levels to rise and your body is not able to get rid of it the way it normally would. If your potassium gets to high you can end up with a fatal heart rhythm problem. People not on these meds lose too much potassium because of the diuretic effect of dumping their glycogen hence the cramps. Me too. I *only* have problems with my legs (specifically my thigh muscles) when I take NOSALT. I don’t take any potassium supplements and I don’t use "lite salt" because I think that Spironolactone goes out of it’s way to store any potassium that you ingest so it shouldn’t be a worry. Ask your endocrinologist for a better answer of course, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to supplement potassium while on this med. That’s just my $0.02.

I gave up dieting this year. I was too depressed to deny myself calories. I am a wuss when it comes to pain (freely admit it). When I had my HSG test the first time they tried all I had was some ibuprofin and benedryl. I still had some percocet left over from my surgery. My ob was a little put out that noone had told me to take that. (I am such a wuss I would only let my ob/gyn do the test). Needless to say, I couldn’t do the test. The next day she had me go into the hospital and they gave me really good drugs. I basically was awake but didn’t feel a thing. It was like being very drunk (including the hung over wanting to sleep feeling for the rest of the day). I strongly recommend for pain adverse people like me to go that route. It means you have to have someone drive you and you will be zonked for the rest of the day. I wasn’t allowed to drive for 24 hours after the procedure. But in terms of getting the test done it was the best way for me. Actually, I drove myself to and from the clinic for my HSG. I did have some *significant* cramping immediately following, but it eased within fifteen minutes, and I had *no* after-affects within an hour. Don’t worry about it. The ibuprofen is a good call, and is likely to keep you pretty comfortable. The worst part is the anticipation. Seriously. Laura

I don’t think I can take any OTC meds as the RE has prescribed a Darvocet and Valium to take an hour before the procedure. He said he wants me relaxed when he does it. I DON’T THINK THAT WILL BE A PROBLEM. DH says I’ll probably be way past cloud 9 from those meds. He will be driving me to and from the hospital, which is an hour’s drive each way. I don’t expect to be any good afterwards. I hope AF shows up soon for you. I’m on gluc 850 mg. 2x a day, starting yesterday, and taking BCP to bring on AF. The HSG isnt too bad. My dr told me to take acouple ibuprofens before the test, because there might be cramping after. I had cramping, but it wasnt too bad. I would definately take DH to drive. Diane, It certainly sounds like you have a plan, and that is always very positive. I had a HSG combined with a Lap which meant I wasn’t awake. Good luck with that. Your DH sounds like a sweetheart. Since I have PCOS, he put me on Metformin 800 mg. 2x a day and I have to take bcp for a week to get af. He also wants me to call and schedule a HSG once af starts. He gave me a script for meds for that, also. The nurse gave me a fact sheet on the HSG. OUCH! She told me not to look at the pic. I said I have to ’cause it’s on the sheet. Needless to say, not looking forward to THAT. I asked about the low carb diet. I was told it couldn’t hurt, but I may lose weight just off the Metformin. Hi Heidi, Welcome. I am a newcomer myself. I have PCOS and credit the Atkins plan with allowing me to conceive my child and save the cost of infertility treatments. I have been off the low-carb wagon since I found out she was on her way (and she is almost three). It is time for me to get serious again. When I was low-carbing, my cycle was dead-on on time, I dropped weight and felt great. (This is YMMV all the way.) A great low-carb meal that would be good for CAD is what I call taco salad. I brown hamburger, add jarred salsa and dump over lettuce with some Marzetti’s ranch dressing. Go easy on the salsa because it can get real carby real fast. I just made some this morning and it will probably be lunch and dinner. We can be newbies together. BTW, does anyone else here remember the eskimo list? Cya KimS 220/220/?

Hi Heidi, PCOS here too. I went on Atkins on January 1, 1999 at 246 pounds, blood sugar rollercoaster, the whole lovely bit. I weigh 144 now, low insulin levels, cholesterol is 185 with an HDL of 73 and no blood sugar crashes. The PCOS actually developed during the two plus years I was on Atkins, but I shudder to think how bad it would be if I didn’t low carb. Advice wise I would say just give up sugar…there are decent alternatives for soda. It can be done, and the benefits are worth it. Take care, Carmen

don’t feel bad we all lose at different rates. my weight seems to drop rapidly over a few days and then stick for about a week -10 days. I had a similar situation when I started. lost 13 lbs my first 2 weeks and then lost nothing for the next 6 day then lost 1 more and then stayed there for another 5 days, then it started coming off again. I have noticed that when I am not losing pounds I am often losing inches. take measurements. they are really helpful to measure your progress when you are getting discouraged. I repeat the diet mantra…Are you drinking enough water? From what I’ve heard from others, it seems like deep purple ketostix can often mean you’re not getting enough water. Also, 15 pounds in 2 weeks is an enormous amount of weight to lose. Obviously your body can’t keep losing at that rate. Lots of people stall scale-wise for one to 3 weeks after induction. My opinion is that your body is probably rebalancing fluid levels, after the initial water loss and dehydrating effect, and that will tend to mask fat loss on the scale for a little while. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

Many people get discouraged and drop out by this point. This is when drinking more water can be very helpful. Being in deep purple is not conducive to optimal fat loss, btw…deep purple is a high level of ketone-concentration in the blood that can cause a small insulin pulse. The insulin pulse is a feedback mechanism the body has to prevent ketoacidosis, the result for us is a slowdown in fatty acid release from the fat storage cells. Deep purple can also indicate mild dehydration and the need for more fluids…or…can indicate that the calories are much too high. (Calories, while not as focused on as in other weight-loss plans, do count at some level) Atkins has the 2 week induction level to get the body rapidly into ketosis…it helps with motivation since so much water is jettisoned so fast the scale usually shows quick results. Hmmmm…I find it hard to believe that the 6 lbs I lost the first week were all water, even though I haven’t lost anything in the several days since then. I’ve been chronically dehydrated for years (though haven’t been to the ER for it since the late 80’s) and usually have very little excess water. For the last year or so I’ve been drinking more and taking 8-16 grams of Vit C a day (currently about 12). Vit C is diuretic (I take this much for other health problems, multiple chemical sensitivities mostly). I also take about 3 Tbs of psyllium a day and average about one charcoal tablet a week. All take tons of water. I have noticed this diet is a bit more water draining so I’ve upped my salt intake a bit. All of those 6 lbs were lost from my stomach (the part of me that’s truely overweight vs slightly chubby…I look pregnant
). When I lose water weight I lose it all over and feel dehydrated. I haven’t measured but I think I’m still losing from my stomach this week even though the scale is the same. Jim: Which LC plan are you going to follow? Have you read our FAQ? My advice is to read the FAQ, pick which plan you like (as LC is becoming very popular and there are many books) and slowly while you are reading and understanding cut the, sugar, starches refined flours, breads and such out of your diet. After you have picked a plan (Atkins, Protein Power, Carb Addicts, NeanderThin, Sugar Busters etc.) follow the rules for that plan. Post and ask questions galore. I’m sure one low carb plan will fit your lifestyle better then the others. Next get your hand on the Low Carb book. Wal-Mart has many of them or check at your local library. I am 26 years old, about 60 lbs over weight, and am having a serious problem with my blood sugar. My doctor is still trying to figure out if I am hypoglycemic or not. Regardless if I am or not, I know that I need to reduce the amount of carbs I intake on a daily basis. I would also like to lose some weight. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good low carb diet? I normally walk 1 to 2 miles a day or bike ride up to 5 miles a day. I try to alternate that every other day or so. Bike rides are usually twice a week.

My favourite is Protein Power, by Drs. Eades. It depends what sort of plan you’re looking for, though. Do you have any preferences as to whether you want to limit total carbohydrate (Protein Power, Atkins) or simply cut out sugar and grains, or maybe you just want to limit refined carbs? (I think this is the SugarBusters approach). Do you do well with rigid guidelines (for example, Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet does not allow for snacking, and sets guidelines for each meal) or prefer to just eat when you’re hungry (eg, Atkins)? I have only one low-carb cookbook, ‘The Low-Carb Cookbook’ by Fran McCullough. It is decent, but in my opinion not that great. Hello group, I have a few questions regarding LC diets. First I should say that two years ago I lost 30 lbs on the Atkins diet, and am a little familiar with the process. I am 6-3 270 34 year old male and I just started back at the gym. * Does anyone else get bored with this diet *this is where I need the most help* * I’d like to know if anyone has insight to countering the bad-breath associated with ketosis (like, will breath assure help?). * I need coffee in the morning or I am useless. I am going to start this diet Monday morning 3-1-99, but first I gotta finnish off the darn Ben and Jerry’s in the freezer. Thanks Henry

First, you don’t have to finish that ice cream, but you do need to get it out of the house if it is gonna tempt you. The diet is no more boring than any other, but to make it more interesting, you are going to have to work a little harder to prepare some of the many recipes posted in this NG and elsewhere on the web. Breath assure helps with the keto breath, along with plenty of water. Some of the small mints, like Smints or TicTac help as well, but you have to count the carbs. Atkins recommends stopping coffee, but many folks stay on it and lose just fine. Coffee has carbs, and the caffeine can stall some people. For people with under 100 to lose, 14 days is best. Extending is for those with "a lot" to lose and if you spend a few years counting posts you’ll reach the conclusion that "a lot" is over 100. In particular the examples in the book of folks staying low longer than the 6 month safety limit all still add over 100 to go at their 6 month point. 2. I see all these carb-safe chocolate bars around, and see a high carb count followed by the fiber count and something called "sugar alcohols." What are they? Do they get subtracted from the carb count? I hear they may cause side effects?
They are the number one cause of stalls. Partially that’s because the claim that sugar alcohols can be deducted by everyone is nonsense and sure enough the ones who need to count them tend to be folks who try low carb diets. Other than stalls, the most common side effect is "severe gastric distress" as in stay close to the toilet and tie yourself down to avoid the rocket effect of flying off the seat from the thrust of what is flying out at high speed.

Onoma, Welcome to the group. To answer the question of how your antibiotic might effect weight loss, Google for "Augmentin prescribing information" and then search for the words "hyperglycemia" or "hypoglycemia". That will tell you if the drug raises or lowers blood sugars. If it either raises or lowers them, you may have more trouble losing weight with a low carb diet as the drug may be playing with your insulin levels. I know that Bactrim can lower blood sugar, to the uncomfortably low levels which will make you feel horrible, when combined with a low carb diet, but I’m not sure about Augmentin. Hey there Onoma Welcome. With regards staying on induction, I think that Dr A did mention it in his book. I really need to read it again. So far as I remember when he discussed a case study, he did keep some on induction for longer. Although I can’t remember the circumstances, there is a time when it’s apt. First off, your weight loss is NOT slow. You are already pretty small, comparatively, so for your height and weight 4.5 pounds is excellent loss. 2. They can cause side effects, those sugar alcohols are not _supposed_ to "count" but many people find they do count and lead to stalls. Some of the other side effects are high cost and nasty taste. Thanks for your time Onoma

It’s probably better to just avoid those. Russell Stover makes really tasty low-carb candies that are OK in limited amounts after induction, but many people say they get intestinal reactions to them. FWIW, they never bothered me. Most of the low-carb drinks, bars, and treats that I have tried are just plain god-awful. They just don’t taste very good. Ditto with most low carb breads. Guck. IMHO, you’ll enjoy the diet more if you just stick to real foods.

I started Atkins in April of 2002, lost rather fast to the point that I’m at now and have been WEAK since June, and cant seem to get focused on it for more than a few days at a time to get going strong again. The only thing I can think of that may have had sugar in it- pepto
bismol? Dunno about sugar, but I do know it has largish amounts of sodium and aspirin (don’t know the actual amounts tho). The salt may have set you off. I know too many salty foods will sometimes set off my cravings. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been so very good- not even having salad dressing on my salad, just a dribble of olive oil. No bbq sauce, no sauce on anything actually except mayo in my tuna and mustard on ham. Every day I’ve been having the same kinds of things- shrimp stir fry (no sauce, just in butter), pork stir fry (same deal), omelettes with just a tiny bit of cheese, plenty bacon, roasted chicken with a dry rub w/ no sugar or carbs. Bunless burgers with bacon and a tomato slice. Etc. No caffeine or nutrasweet even… I’ve wanted to eat dressing, especially when I saw that ranch was like what- 1.4 carbs… but I’ve been scared it would all backfire on me or I would get carried away (I could literally drink ranch from the bottle), so I haven’t used any.
Heehee. Me too. And then today… That evil woman (haha) coming around with those hot rolls in that basket… the sheer smell of them. (sigh)
That yeasty smell is divine isn’t it? I have been bad about water though. I never really have been a water drinker… I’m forcing 4 glasses into me right now and trying to increase it, but let me tell ya- it’s 4 glasses more than I was ever drinking before. I maintained some semblance of hydration purely through milk. (at about a half gallon a day, is it any wonder I have never been able to get this weight off?)
1 liter of soda a day for me. At least you got some vitamins out of it. Does anyone have any guidance on how to drink more water when you just really don’t like the stuff?
Add ice– keep it cold. The colder it is the less flavor it has. Try using a filter for your tap, or getting bottled. Another poster suggests a straw. Works amazingly well for me as it helps reduce the air I swallow and keeps that bloated feeling away. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – On the weight front- I don’t have a lot to lose, just 20 more pounds, which I know will be a bit slower than those who have more to lose. My best friend is doing this with me and she’s got about 60 to lose and she’s only four days in and has already lost more than I have. I think the main thing for me though is that I don’t just want to lose the 20 pounds, which I could easily do in a month with some phentermine… it’s that I want to keep it off. Forever. Without feeling like my skin is crawling and without feeling irritable or like there are things in my body that don’t belong there. At any rate, I am feeling good about eating like this. I’m recognizing that I’ve had some bad habits. Milk- half a gallon a day. Ice cream- Ben and Jerry’s half baked, at least three pints a week. Chocolate severely- a bag of Hershey Miniatures weekly and at least a tube of cookie dough a week. Donut holes- sometimes a dozen a day. Just junk junk junk. You would think those would be the things that I would have caved over. But no- it was dinner rolls. Go figure. The sad thing is, I never noticed all those things before. I just idly ate all that and bought it as if it was reflex or something. Not until I started this- and started watching every little thing that went into my mouth and reading labels and entering everything into my diary did I even realize what horrible habits I have had. And the single worst- finishing off my son’s food. He’s six and so if I got him a happy meal or made dinner at home or whatever and he didn’t finish it- I would just finish it for him. I didn’t even realize I was doing this all the time. ALL THE TIME! Anyway- sorry to ramble… I tend to. It’s just nice to have someone to share with who isn’t so negative and down on this way of eating. Granted, I’ve not been the best to sticking with diets and things in the past, so this to many of my friends is like boy crying wolf. arg. Stephanie
Its only been two and a half weeks and I am no longer ‘demon-woman’. I had my first TOM about a week and a half ago, and there were no symptoms for the first time in my life. The last time I’d felt that good (not counting pregnancy when I instinctively ate low carb) was right before I hit puberty. Yes, you read that right. As soon as I became a ‘woman’ 27 yrs ago, I felt physically bad *all the time* (joint pain, exhaustion, sick headaches, abrupt mood swings, sunlight always seemed brassy, ugly and headache inducing to me– my fave time of the day was early winter mornings when the light was a pretty pale lemon color, but mainly the never-ending joint pain which I just eventually learned to live with) but nobody could find anything *wrong* with me. I just finished two weeks as well. I have done so well- except for today. I went to a barbq place and was so lacking in will that I ate TWO rolls! Now I feel all guilty and horrible and like I’ve ruined everything I spent the last two weeks doing. I lost six pounds in the last two weeks and I’m just smacking myself- what am I thinking?????
Are you sure you’re not my twin? Two and a half for me, also only lost 6 pounds. Went to Ryan’s and had fresh out of the oven dinner roll w/honey butter, yum. Got a bit sick the start of my second week and had a bit of rice (1/3 cup) to settle the tummy and stablize things , if you get my drift, and stopped losing. I bounce up and down the scale all day/week but it never drops below 149. Don’t *really* (no, really) care so much because I’ve gone from size 16 (and snug too) to a slightly tight size 8 petite. But I’d still like to see those numbers begin dropping again. Anyway, I’m going to try not to beat myself up over it, otherwise I’ll probably just give up and end up driving to krispy kreme. I have the rest of the day to get back on track and tomorrow is a new day.
Me too. Its depressing to watch my DH drop from 133 to 124 eating twice the calories I am, but I paste my rah-rah grin on for him anyway. (He’s never lost weight since he quit junior varsity over 20 years ago). Is this common? I thought I read that by then end of two weeks you were craving sweets and carbs and such less. Less, but not nothing. For some reason (I think it may be the one 1/2 wedge of cantaloupe I had that day– first fruit in months actually) I couldn’t stop eating yesterday. My total calorie intake was still below BMR but it *seemed* like a binge even tho I was eating only salads and porkrinds. The feeling has passed and I’ve dropped back down to my usual level 650-800 cals (790-640 below my BMR —5′2", small boned, light activity), but I’m now a little leary of having another piece. Oh well… (dust myself off and get back on the wagon). You can try L-glutamine. And that may actually be it, just the smell. I can smell sugar from inside my pantry with all the containers sealed. Amazing and scary. Just carry on. You’ll be ok. And if a few more months of eating just healthy food and more water (way to go on the progress so far) doesn’t do it, you can look into some supplements, notably L-Glutamine. The way I drink more water is just do it. I can down room temperature water faster than cold water. I make myself drink 16 oz without stopping 4x a day. It gets easier after you get hydrated enough. Strangely enough, not getting enough water makes me dislike it more. It should be the other way around. Weird. .. Bridget M.

Steph, I hate water, too (And I know water’s necessary to ANY healthy WOL). I’ve found that drinking with a straw helps. Also, I keep a bottle at my desk at work and just fill it up every morning—that helps me keep track of the amount of water I’m drinking. And although I can’t ever find them, I love the waters with the ‘hint of lemon’ or ‘hint of lime’. It’s probably cheaper for me to just buy limes and squeeze them, but I never seem to get the same balance. HTH! Amanda

I have thought about moving forward a bit to add in a some fruit and the occasional piece of banana bread, but only stay near 20 or 30 grams per day. Is this what some others have done? I think I better go read stage two!
You’ll need to read stage two. Start by adding in more vegetables for a few weeks. Then maybe some nuts for a few more weeks. Then perhaps some berries. Banana bread is likely a way down the road, even low carb stuff made with banana flavoring. .. Bridget M.

The only thing I can think of that may have had sugar in it- pepto bismol? I’ve been so very good- not even having salad dressing on my salad, just a dribble of olive oil. No bbq sauce, no sauce on anything actually except mayo in my tuna and mustard on ham. Every day I’ve been having the same kinds of things- shrimp stir fry (no sauce, just in butter), pork stir fry (same deal), omelettes with just a tiny bit of cheese, plenty bacon, roasted chicken with a dry rub w/ no sugar or carbs. Bunless burgers with bacon and a tomato slice. Etc. No caffeine or nutrasweet even… I’ve wanted to eat dressing, especially when I saw that ranch was like what- 1.4 carbs… but I’ve been scared it would all backfire on me or I would get carried away (I could literally drink ranch from the bottle), so I haven’t used any. My best friend is doing this with me and she’s got about 60 to lose and she’s only four days in and has already lost more than I have. I think the main thing for me though is that I don’t just want to lose the 20 pounds, which I could easily do in a month with some phentermine… it’s that I want to keep it off. Forever. Without feeling like my skin is crawling and without feeling irritable or like there are things in my body that don’t belong there. At any rate, I am feeling good about eating like this. I’m recognizing that I’ve had some bad habits. Milk- half a gallon a day. Ice cream- Ben and Jerry’s half baked, at least three pints a week. Chocolate severely- a bag of Hershey Miniatures weekly and at least a tube of cookie dough a week. Donut holes- sometimes a dozen a day. Just junk junk junk. You would think those would be the things that I would have caved over. But no- it was dinner rolls. Go figure. The sad thing is, I never noticed all those things before. I just idly ate all that and bought it as if it was reflex or something. Not until I started this- and started watching every little thing that went into my mouth and reading labels and entering everything into my diary did I even realize what horrible habits I have had. And the single worst- finishing off my son’s food. He’s six and so if I got him a happy meal or made dinner at home or whatever and he didn’t finish it- I would just finish it for him. I didn’t even realize I was doing this all the time. ALL THE TIME! Anyway- sorry to ramble… I tend to. It’s just nice to have someone to share with who isn’t so negative and down on this way of eating. Granted, I’ve not been the best to sticking with diets and things in the past, so this to many of my friends is like boy crying wolf. arg. Stephanie

You’re right not to beat yourself up over it. Several days more Induction using no sweeteners, just real foods will get you back on track. Congrats on losing 14 lbs on the 1 week Induction. Atkins says the average female, with average metabolic resistance, who needs to lose 50 lbs or more, typically loses about 8 lbs during the first two weeks of Induction. It’s 12 if she has a low degree of metabolic resistance. You 14 lbs. loss puts means you’ve got two strong pluses: (1) you closely adhered to the Induction standards, and (2) you are definitely not one of the metabolically resistant. I’m sure having hubby doing Atkins alongside of you helped, too. Neither one of us is ready to move out of the Induction phase.
Why should you? See Atkins’ comments in DANDR, the MORE INDUCTION? chapter. A wholoe lot of people here have been on Induction for many months–especially if they have a lot of weight to lose. We have adjusted to this way of eating, my blood sugar has stabalized and my PCOS symptoms have been reduced so much that I have only had to take Midol once in the last two weeks (and that is due to PMS—not Ovarian pain). Trust me, this is a major breakthrough. I have been taking Midol every four hours almost daily for months….just to cope with the bone crunching oviarian pain.

There’s lots in the book that’s not on the website. Buy it, read it, highlight it, rethumb as needed. Then, a while down the road — like when you hit a stall, reread it. Very valuable resource. And if you interested in the best book on why the diet works and the physiology behind it (in a book that’s easy to read by a lay person), I recommending adding Protein Power to your library. Thanks so much for your input. I had a feeling that this was something that was up to us. Gabe has less weight to lose than I do plus this is more about changing out eating habits so I can manage PCOS. He is along for the ride to shed the pounds he has put on and learn a better way to support me. I think we will stay in induction for awhile. Though I really miss fruit, nuts and banana bread. I’ve seen people do both. Atkins says it’s ok to stay on it for awhile as long as you’re feeling well. Isn’t it a great feeling? The book is worthwhile. While you can find things on the site, it’s not linear like a book, and you would likely miss things you didn’t even realize were important. .. Bridget M.

You can stay at induction levels as long as you want. I stayed at 20 or under for over 9 months. Since we started getting strawberries in April I’ve been between 20 and 25. I’ve had no problems at this level. I think quite a few of the regulars here have stayed at or near induction for long periods. Chelle, I know how you feel. I just finished two weeks of induction yesterday. I haven’t noticed a big difference in the scale yet, but I feel better, blood sugar is lower, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave the induction phase yet. My Ketostix are dark purple! The web suggests this is an autoimmune problem. If so then not only is low-carbing a good idea but also removing those things that are implicated in autoimmune problems. Hello, I have hypothyroidism, pcos, and hypoadrenal. I few years ago if you asked me if I was allergic to any foods, I would have told you no. I have learned by testing and process of elimination I am allergic to many foods. Wheat causes sinuses problems along with terrible headaches, but it also causes such stiffness in the morning I can barely walk. Yes I knew I had this stiffness a few years ago, but arthritis runs in the family, so I thought it was normal for me. What foods cause problems for me, probably will not cause problems for you, so the only way to find out it to experiment for yourself. Hi there gang, I have hypothyroid, and hashimotos, both of which make it very hard to lose any weight. But, I can only seem to lose on a low carb diet, I just lose it slower than some. My question is, is there anyone else on here that is hypothyroid or hashimotos, and if you are, what are you doing aside from LC to help your weight?
* At this time I have to both low-carb and low-cal just NOT to gain weight. At first Atkins worked great for me as I was losing 1 or 2 1/2 lbs a week and lost 40 lbs in 5 months. Then the weight loss STOPPED last November and only "starvation" works now – less than 1000 cals a day. So I’m at the same weight now since last Nov and getting very discouraged. (BTW as soon as I try to increase calories I immediately GAIN weight so I am stuck). * I’m also hypothyroid and the first 40 lbs were no problem losing on Atkins, but when your body learns to convert protein to carbos you stop losing – has nothing to do with your thyroid. If you give up the protein all you have left to live on is fats and oils and that just don’t work. Hi ladies….I’m new to this PCOS stuff and have a question. I was diagnosed this past May and have been doing quite a bit of reading on PCOS. I read somewhere that if you have PCOS there is a 50% chance that your sister also has it…is this true? I suggested to my sister that she ask her gyn if he thought it was a concern when she went to her 6wk postpartum check up (she just had a beautiful baby girl) since my symptoms became worse after I gave birth to my son. I figured it couldn’t hurt, especially since she had a miscarriage before her baby was born and had quite a bit of trouble getting pg in the first place. This is the email she sent to me with his response…. "My appointment went fine. I told Dr. De Greef about the PCOS and he said that the pill would pretty much keep me from getting it. He said to keep an eye on my blood sugar levels though and watch my weight." This isn’t correct is it? From what I understand the pill just pretty much masks the symptoms of PCOS. As far as I know she doesn’t have any of the obvious symptoms, but she has been on the pill since she was around 16yrs old…she is now 29. I would like to convince her to get a second opinion. I don’t want her to find out the hard way like I did that she has this when she is trying for her second child. If anyone could help me I’d appreciate it alot!! Kim

I took the pill for 10+ years. It masked my symptoms to the point that when I stoppped having a period the doctors just said it was because I had been on the pill to long. the dr. is a little off. The pill will help minimize symptoms, but doesn’t prevent. As my dr. put it; it can help preserve your fertility (though I wouldn’t say that is 100 percent true either). Also, if she is worried about PCO make sure she is on the type of pill that has low androgens just in case (orthocept, demulen, desogen are examples. If her blood sugar levels were fine through her pg, then there is a chance she doesn’t have it. PCOer’s are way more likely to get gestational diabetes (lets put it this way I bombed the urine tests at almost every drs. appt and felt they should have put me on the gestational diabetic diet from the start). Also, when did she miscarry. If it was very early than it could be a progesterone problem (common with PCO). My recommendation (and I am not a dr.): is that when she is trying for #2, try for about three months (max). At that point, insist on the blood work to diagnosis PCO. A good dr. will not let a PCOer go very long unassisted in trying to get pg. My dr. intervened immediately (however, I was 36 at the time). Also, how did he suggest she keep an eye on her sugar levels. as far as I know her sugar levels were find through out her pg but I do know she had some protein in her uring towards the end. When I was pg with my son I also had normal sugar levels. It wasn’t until almost 3 years later that I was diagnosed with PCOS. Her miscarriage was in the first month or so, unfortunately I can’t remember for sure. If it were me, I would push the blood work at her next regular exam before she starts trying to conceive (heck, I would lie and say we had been trying for a couple of months). If she isn’t comfortable with asking the ob/gyn suggest she go to her internist/general practitioner to do the blood work so she can take it to her dr. If her miscarriage was that early it could have been due to low progesterone (again a good ob/gyn would then put her on progesterone during her first trimester). The thing about PCO is that it is a syndrome with a wide range of symptoms in individuals so some people may not know they have it or have problems getting pg. I don’t have insulin resistance for example and I got pg on the smallest dose of clomid possible (and in the second month). So, she could be one of the lucky ones (or not have it) and since stress can affect conception, she might not want to freak out. My own personal view
