PCO to PMS
Question:
Let’s just say, I’ve read ‘em all and am adapting ala Dana Carpender of www.holdthetoast.com . I’m keeping carbs between 20 and 25 grams per day. I know there’s a lot of suggestion to take supplements, but I’m the biggest pill-hater there is, so I’m just going to have to wait and see what develops and what I absolutely HAVE to have. I’d rather save my pill-popping for PMS symptoms and my monthly migraine (which seems to occur at ovulation–or in the past at what was the interrupted ovulation I was used to experiencing). I’m taking the Evening Primrose Oil capsules and OTC remedies under advisement. This is THE worst period I have ever had!!!! The first one since LC was last month, and it was kind of like my body was saying, "oh, should I…naw…maybe….okay, a little bit." I can’t believe how much I’ve put out the past two days! But since I haven’t had a proper period in 6 months, I’m sure there’s just plenty of lining to be shed, and maybe next month it will be better. Several years ago I did CAD and had great success, especially in the female hormone/menstruation department, so if you feel good and are happy with it, keep on truckin’! I am thinking the PMS situation will get in hand after normal cycles are established. We’ll see, huh?! Are you trying to get pregnant? (Just curious!) — Becky 5′2" 245/217.5/115 since 3/11/00 Perseverance is not a long race. It is many short races one right after another.

Becky, We aren’t doing anything high tech to get pg, we’re letting what happens happen. I’m 38, dh is 39. We have one daughter conceived by a miracle when the doctor wasn’t in the office to do an insemination. I’m really trying to get the "side effects" of PCOS under control with diet. I’ve had a "reversal" of the disease, where my doctor said the cysts are gone and my ovaries are not enlarged. I thought for sure I was going to have my period. I was hoping that was the reason for no weight loss in 2 weeks, but only had slight bleeding for one day, and still no loss. I’m hoping that increasing my water and watching my reward meal will help. We’ll see.

Response:
Yeah, I think you’ve really got to watch the RM or it becomes a free-for-all and leads to cravings during the day. Good luck on your journey! We had our third baby last year at ages 36 and 38. When I found out I was pregnant I asked the doctor, rather sheepishly, "am I too old for this?" And he said, "apparently not!" Smart ass! — Becky 5′2" 245/211/115 since 3/11/00 Perseverance is not a long race. It is many short races one right after another.

I get some outrageous PMS — my whole family walks around in terror of me during that time. Fortunately, since they don’t want to be around me during that time anymore than I want to be around them, the following is my method of handling it: Food doesn’t help me during PMS. The only thing that helps is a warm tub in a dark room with candles lit and the aromatherapy machine turned on with lavender oil in it. Then a nap. And maybe a pile of Vanity Fair magazines on the bed and the bedroom door closed. Sometimes a girl’s gotta have a little girl time. Speck 5′9" 150/136/125 (had a little mini whoosh this week!) Wise post! I take that girl time whenever I can get it. Fortunately hubby understands. A couple years ago, my PMS was out of control. My doctor put me on a very lose dose (10mg) of Paxil, and boy did it work! I went off of it last summer for various reasons, and my symptoms havne’t returned (course, my life has changed drastically for the better, too, so that could have been part of it) Screamer, aka the Brick Tapper On Atkins Induction – Eternally 244/228/140

said, and I quote: I know I can’t. But I did make some of Lynne’s Chocolate the first day, and shared with hubby. The Pop-Tarts were surprisingly DISsatisfying!
Someone was talking recently about foods they found hard to resist. Mine would be those chocolate poptarts with the vanilla filling. Lucky for me, I’ve never been able to find them in California, so I haven’t had one in 5 years

I was diagnosed with PCO back in 1994, but was obviously plagued since a teen. Doctor just put me on BC pills and called it good. But I went online to try to find more info. Over the years I’ve seen the research and information bloom. Went low carb back in 1996, but didn’t stick with it even though it aided my PCO symptoms. Still, more information has just kept confirming what I knew: PCO is caused by insulin resistance and I needed to get it under control with diet. Had stopped using BC pills, but new doctor put me on Demulen in 1997 and that helped symptoms, but I ended up with a "surprise" pregnancy anyway in 1998 after I stopped menstruating while taking the pills! I’m one of these people who saw a period maybe three times a year. So, imagine my surprise and wonder that only days after starting LC this time, I had a period! I thought it was just a fluke, since I’m breastfeeding and all. Still, I’ve been wondering if maybe this week I wasn’t dealing with PMS. Wednesday I was weepy for no apparent reason, and I just had to have McDonald’s and real chocolate. I also, despite my listing of 220 as my current weight, was climbing up the scale 3-5 pounds (just figured it was the carb binge, and went on with this WOE). I also noticed that I was getting really short-tempered and yelling a bit louder than usual! Sort of crampy feeling too. Lo and behold! Guess who came to visit today?
