Congratulations on the birth of your nephew. Even though you’re an old hand at being an auntie, every time a new little one is born, it’s a miracle all over again. Hi Karen, tough luck on the sudden weight-gain, but you know it was probably pre- menstral, so doesn’t count. I assume you’re aware that losing weight can greatly boost fertility in women with PCOS? Fat stores the female hormones, so as you lose fat, you release extra hormones into your body (hence the water retention, no doubt). Oops almost forgot…I went to WI and gained 4 1/2 lbs. HI. In Feb we are going to try conceiving once again. With 100 mg clomid and 5,000 profasi. Planned intercourse(not IUI). This will be our lasted child; due to age. Our 2nd child is 4 yrs old;and well- I kinda forget what we did exactly ;the lasted time we conceived. So if anyone can answer this question;please email me or post. My doctor saids: clomid 2-6,take temps and opk’s. Take profasi the day we get a + opk,and temp drop. (now my understanding is I won’t be monitored through any of this;which worries me alittle;since we would be happy with just 1 more child;not 2,3 or 4) (Don’t get me wrong;we would be thrilled with twins but would prefer just 1 more) If were waiting to give the profasi the day I get my + opk ; how soon would I ovulate? I know it’s sooner then the standard 36 hrs. I think I was told lasted time to wait 12 hrs to have intercourse; that I would ovulate within 24 hrs or sooner. Is that correct? Has anyone else out there done clomid and profasi with timed intercourse? And one more question; since were worried about multiples is it safe to say, doing clomid and profasi gives you a good chance on conceiving multiples? Sometimes I think maybe we should do clomid and not profasi, but I don’t ovulate sometimes even when I surge without the shot. If you can answer any of these questions; I thank you in advance. I want to add that I have posted here within the lasted 2 weeks checking to see if anyone has any leftover profasi or hcg;another lady on this board saids she got here meds here cheaper;my insurance doesant pay;so if anyone would have any;please email me. Double Thanks! Camille
Response:
Sorry, but I am confused. . . In a previous post, you said that your doctor will *not* give you a prescription for an hCG shot. This means you are self-medicating yourself? If you are, please reconsider. You are putting your health at a considerable risk. Also, please be decent and warn others who are kind enough to answer your questions, or worse – sell you drugs, that you are self-medicating. t.

I agree with what everyone here has said: find a new doctor. Clomid is supposed to help with ovulation. Without monitoring via ultrasound you have no clue if your lining is thick enough, if you have any folicles and when to take the HCG shot. I never used HCG with Clomid because my RE said that I didn’t ovulate with Clomid at all so we had to move on to injectables with HCG. Your doctor needs to monitor your estrogen to makes sure you have a folicle and not a cyst. Tammy
Response:
On Clomid u *must* be monitored via ultrasound. There is an increased risk for ovarian cysts. If u develop a cyst and continue with treatment u could put yourself in jeapordy. I just cancelled a cycle due to a cyst. If I continued to do the cycle without knowing about this cyst…I would hate to see what would have happened. In order to use the HCG correctly u need to be monitored using ultrasound as well. The ultrasound is used to see the size of your follicles and how many could possibly mature. From what I understand, using HCG when your follicles arent large enough is a waste. Using HCG when u have too many mature follicles could put u at risk for multiples and hyperstimulation. U need to kick your MD to the curb and find a new one. Any MD who "recomends" meds without monitoring or taking responsibility to prescribe them has a couple of screws loose. Fertility meds can be fatal and dangerous is not used properly. When using meds without proper monitoring its like a crap shoot….especially when timing the HCG shot and intercourse. *~`~ Cyndie ~`~*

OK, this tells me that your doc is a quack. To echo what others have said, no doc worth his salt would ever "recommend" meds and then refuse to give you a script for them and he/she also would never put you on fertility meds without monitoring you since this can prove fatal. Many women on these boards have had to cancel cycles due to probs found while monitoring cycles. Secondly, if you are looking for a temp drop after ov then you’ll only find it if you’ve missed the window of conceiving. Temps *rise* at ov and if you’ve conceived they stay high or even get higher, if they’ve dropped after ov then you know you didn’t conceive that cycle. I would suggent you buy the book"Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Wechler. You can also purchase Ovusoft software that will help you in determining if you’ve ov’d or not. There are other programs out there that help you chart such as Fertility Friend. I’ve heard good things about Fertility Friend and I use Ovusoft myself. I think it’s invaluable since OPK’s don’t work for me because I have PCOS. Get yourself a new doc… preferably a Reproductinve Endocrinologist. Question:
What are the chances of a gal with PCOS getting pregnant with no fertility treatments – And on top of that.. been taking the pill to have her periods since the age of 15 (now 23) because without the pill she wouldn’t have any? Well guess what… I there’s hope for everyone I guess because my home pregnancy test came back positive last night. I thought I would never be able to experience something of the sort. Sigh! I’m scared to death. I don’t know what to do honestly. I have a doctors appointment next week to be tested – simply because I don’t think home tests are all that accurate. I need advice.. Has anyone here gone through this? Other than the doctors, what should I do until I see her? Should I stop all meds just in case? should I continue them because I don’t believe this is right? Any ideas?
Response:
actually, home pg tests are pretty accurate. You are more likely to get a false negative from testing too early than a false positive. However, I would contact your dr. and see if he/she wants you on progesterone suppositories (they are vaginal and you put them in twice a day). This is very important in the beginning of a pregnancy so us PCO’s have enough progesterone so the placenta can develop. I started them the day I had a positive pg test elyann (mother of a one yr. old conceived on 50 mg clomid) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Melanie wrote: > What are the chances of a gal with PCOS getting pregnant with no fertility > treatments – And on top of that.. been taking the pill to have her periods > since the age of 15 (now 23) because without the pill she wouldn’t have any? > Well guess what… I there’s hope for everyone I guess because my home > pregnancy test came back positive last night. Well my mom had 5 kids and her mom had 9, so go figure. Lots of sex I guess to catch that rare ovulation

Well and women with PCOS can sometimes have a weird hormonal imbalance that leads certain tests to come out pos. no matter what. Depends on which test you used. But, I’ve taken pg tests and none have ever come out pos. yet! So good luck.

I figure I can always be a foster mom instead of trying to get pregnant or adopt a few kids. There are plenty of them due to the wars and chinea has lots of female babies in orphanages because of their rule that families can only have one child over there. Or if I was a teacher then I could have my students who I could consider mine. So there are other ways other than getting pregnant to have children. That’s what I’m planning to do teach kids taekwondo get involved in their lives and help them grow up. Part of the joy of parenthood I gather is watching them grow and learn. I can make a much bigger impact on the world by being a teacher and maybe a foster mom than popping off a few kids. I know I might not be able to anyway so now that I have this diagnosis I’ve decided to have a very different life taking into account the limitations of my reproductive system. I recognize that it might be possible to have a child with this disorder but there are other considerations. I have other genetically passable problems aside from this disorder which given the way I was treated by society I do not want to put anyone through that. I have learning disorders it’s not that I do not want children it’s that I’m not sure I have a right to put another human being through what I have been through the kind of abuse, discrimination and frustration that I’ve been through. Some days I wonder why I was born at all. I’m thinking I don’t want children anyway until things settle down in this society maybe. Until I make a big enough impact on people to teach them not to be so awful to people who are different. Then I might consider bringing children into this world but not until then because I think this society isn’t ready to accept an intelligent human being with severe deficits in learning and short term memory. Until I can take a sledge hammer and clear the barriers out so the disabled can do anything in this society. That they can go to college and get their modifications so they will succeed graduate and get out in the world and be treated as equals to anyone. I never intended to be a role model but I guess fate had other plans. I tried to run away from it but found out I couldn’t. I gave up on college because not only did I have to learn the material on my own I had to deal with butt dragging from uncooperative professors and the general powerlessness of the disabilities services. Because of that I realized I’d be better off trying to learn what I needed without their "help" which made things even more frustrating and to top it off I sometimes failed the course in spite of all the work I did. I dropped out of wake tech because nothing I did seemed to work and I was on academic probation and couldn’t seem to get off academic probation. They recently told me that they sent the message for the wrong year I wrote back and told them I no longer cared about any of that and told them I dropped out because I couldn’t get off academic probation. I decided to wait two years when my record would be gone and then I could return if I wanted to without having to deal with academic probation anymore which meant I had to get an advisor’s permision to register for classes. Since I couldn’t get my gpa up to get off it and the other frustrations I had to deal with I decided to simply quit. I felt like sisyphus anyway trying to move a boulder up the hill only to have it roll down again only my boulders were intractible people and burocratic red tape so I tried to ditch the boulder after I got tired of coping with it. I guess I just got tired of people who make a nuisance of themselves in higher education and do not seem to have any purpose other than to piss me off. I found out the real world is no better than college in that respect. I can deal with dead weight up to a high school level but at a college level I either have to go on my own or get decent professors. Which the ladder is impossible to reliably find good professors so it isn’t an option for me to continue going to college anymore. I’ve had two hurtful humiliating rejections with jobs I applied for one of them was volenteer. I’m thinking about calling this lady back and telling her I talked to some of my friends and they agree with me she is a miserable vonenteer coordinator which is something like what she said to me. I know it isn’t a christian thing to do but I’m just a tad tired of this sort of thing and if I’m not going to get the job anyway I might as well throw some of the insults back in her face. That would remedy the situation if it arises from ignorance of how much that hurt. I’m not sure this is what I should be doing but the fact is I’m tired of that. The verbally we are as we once were physically so if you keep getting hurt a good deal of the time hurting the other person badly enough to prove you can will give everyone around you pause not much but they know you aren’t defenseless. I won’t try to knife the other person in the back I owe my honor that much. If I’m going to do something I might regret I’m not going to stab that person in the back I’m going to go right for the front.

Whatever you decide with respect to the quantity of carbohydrates, it’s very important that she doesn’t go back to eating low-quality carbohydrates like sugar, white flour, pasta, and white rice. Good nutrition during and prior to pregnancy is crucial to the future health of your child. Staying away from refined carbohydrates should eliminate the worst of the developmental problems, but if you want nothing but the best for your child, make sure that she eats plenty of eggs (preferably omega-3 fortified), pasture-fed butter (the raw butter from Organic Pastures if you live in California, otherwise try to find Irish or New Zealand butter [Kerrygold should be pretty easy to find]), and other nutritious foods like liver and shellfish.

I honestly don’t see how it would work any other way….I just had a visit money with the fertility specialist (who was great by the way–she sat in the chair next to me instead of talking to me across the desk). She told me that as long as I keep my insulin level under 10 (In 1999 my insulin level was 25.7. You aren’t going to ovulate on an insulin level that high), when I am ready, I should just be able to stop taking my bc pills and get pregnant. If that doesn’t work, I might have to take some Clomid, but she felt it should be fairly "easy" for me to get pregnant. (This was not what I expected to hear since I have heard so much negative about my PCOS and ability to conceive, as well as the fact I am 32). She also told me they would keep me on Glucophage for the first trimester to prevent miscarriage. I am to continue on my lc eating, add 20 minutes of exercise daily to help with the insulin resistance and continue with my Glucophage. I can’t imagine eating lots of carbs just because of a pregnancy when carbs are what made me fat & sick in the first place. This is just my opinion of course, after talking to my doctor. I don’t think anyone should make decisions without consulting their doctor. Lisa

Low-carbing is an approximation of a hunter-gatherer diet, so its likely to be very healthy for the developing baby. However as an approximation there are things to take into consideration. Hunter-gatherers were not necessairly in deep ketosis; so perhaps it;s best not to be on too strict a low-carb diet. Hunter gatherers get a different mineral profile than a typical (modern) low-carb diet; it;s probably advisable to take mineral supplements, potassium and magnesium particularly (you can get potassium from the salt substitutes which are usually 2/3 potassium chloride). IN MY OPINION it was getting my blood sugars under control by adopting a very low carb WOE that improved my health sufficiently for me to be able to get pregnant. IN MY OPINION there is no better WOE for pre-pregnancy or pregnancy itself. — Rosiebint 16 weeks

As long as she is taking prenatals (which she should be anyway), fats and proteins are the most important things for a growing baby. I am pretty sure Atkins has something on his site about it. www.atkinscenter.com Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. T
Question:
Trying to find info for a friend, can’t seem to find the stuff I found when I was looking. Need info on elevated prolactin levels with PCOS Thanks Dawn —
Question:
Have you all had your prolactin levels checked? I found out I had PCOS months before I found out I had a prolactinoma. My OBGYN discovered the PCOS and sent me to a endocrinologist who ran bloodwork and discovered the prolactinoma. Apparently they’re pretty common and it was causing as much trouble as the PCOS as far as ttc. I was wondering if it’s a common thing for PCOS women to have prolacinomas too? A prolactinoma, for those who don’t know, is a small benign tumor on the pituitary gland that messes up hormones so you never get a period or ovulate. Pam

Try the Fertility and Sterility Feb 1999 issue. One of the articles talks about an Italian study with PCOS women doing well on Cabergoline/Dostinex, a medication to treat hyperprolactimia. Victoria "Qintes" <Qin…@floodcity.net> wrote in message

Really good big section on that in Diana Schwarzbein’s book "The Schwarzbein Principle." She explains what’s going on with metabolism and hormones, how carb overload can mess with your insulin, estrogen, and other hormones, and has case histories of a couple of women. The fertility-specialist stories will curl your hair — and to think they are SO specialized that they don’t look at carb overload as a cause. Sigh. Connie OR

My goodness, here I am waiting for the Canuck to come back on line and I’m answering questions left right and centre. I was on bromocriptine years ago. I tried it and with moderate success in the 80’s. I had galactorrhoea with PCOS, so it reasonable to try it. I can’t say I had huge success with it – we didn’t have the Glucophage options "way back then" and they didn’t know about the insulin resistance. I did stay on it for a few years as it was my only option – that and spironolactone. The side effects are not wonderful!! I’d bet the REs today would be reluctant to RX it unless there were other indications to use the drug. Carone

The newer drug – Cabergoline – was studied in Italy and was published in the early 1999 Fertility and Sterility articles. I’m not sure if any were done since then. Supposedly it worked well for PCOS. Victoria "SR5242" <sr5…@aol.com> wrote in message

Question:
Hi everyone.. I am 21, live with my parents, am still under my father’s health plan and am the one who hasnt told my mom yet about my PCOS… anyway, my dad’s plan switched to Healthlink and they will not cover my birth control pills even with my letter of necessity (they say because it is a brand name drug that they wont cover it– I am taking Mircette).. and then we got a letter in the mail today and they are not going to cover my last office visit which was only a 6 month check up and that is when he did the glucose/insulin ratio test.. the bill was $75 and the letter said that they would cover nothing and that they do not cover such conditions/services and to check our handbook for details… has anyone had similar problems as this?? My last insurance company covered all of this and I am getting so upset.. now i will have to tell my mom everything, especially if she is gonna call the insurance company and complain to them, and she doesnt even understand what is wrong with me… any suggestions?? similar situations with a remedy??? thanks for any help…. Becky
Response:
Hopefully it is just a matter of your doctor putting in a wrong diagnosis code or something equivalent. If your insulin came back high or your bloodsugar high. You may be able to claim it as insulin resistance. Not PCOS. Which can sometimes look like your treating fertility. Maybe if your doctor puts in a letter to your insurance that the birth control isn’t used for fertility issues, that is used to treat a medical condition instead. If I am not mistaken you make have to file some sort of grievance letter to the insurance. ( ladies please help me out with this one). Best of luck to you. The easiest thing for you to do is to switch to a generic birth control pill. If your insurance company doesn’t cover brand name BCPS they won’t make an exception for you, unless perhaps you’ve tried all of their covered generic brands and had side effects. There are numerous very good generic birth control pills on the market do not hesitate to change. As for getting your insurance company to cover your visit, you’ll need to read the information they sent you to see if they cover preventative service and/or problem visits. That will be the major issue. Your doctor’s office can contact the insurance company. They can also resubmit your bill if they made a mistake in coding. Contacting your doc online won’t help you. You need to talk to his insurance billing person! Good luck!! Insurance companies can be such a pain.
