Metformin…dosages/effectiven ess questions
Question:
> (1) I have read some literature on taking Met up to the maximum dosage of 2500 > mg. Are any of you doing this?
Yes, I am taking 2500mg/day. > (2) Could the Met be helping me and just not > affecting the ovulation part of the deal (i.e. should I go have my levels > tested again…haven’t since July)
Yes, by all means have blood work done! Metformin made a dramatic difference in my lab results. It lowered my cholesterol and testosterone a LOT. My insulin level is also normal now. Since I started taking metformin in August, I only had one period, and as far as I could tell, I only ovulated twice. But on that second time, I got pregnant! > (3) Have any of you given up on Met because > it didn’t work and, if so, at what point? I would appreciate any and all > input.
I’m completely devoted to met! I would suggest that you give it longer. Many people say it really needs a year to reach its maximum effectiveness. Get your labs done, and if they are not normal, you should probably increase your dosage. I didn’t ovulate until I was at 2000mg/day. Good luck! I have been on Metformin 1700 mg./day since July 1999. I take 850 mg. in the AM and 850 mg. in the PM. Previous to that, just did the BCP thing. BCP was stopped in June 1999 when I started on the Met at 1000 mg./day. Since stopping the Met., I have not had a period. Starting to feel really gross again. Questions: (1) I have read some literature on taking Met up to the maximum dosage of 2500 mg. Are any of you doing this? (2) Could the Met be helping me and just not affecting the ovulation part of the deal (i.e. should I go have my levels tested again…haven’t since July) (3) Have any of you given up on Met because it didn’t work and, if so, at what point? I would appreciate any and all input. Thanks! –Kristina

I had this problem. I started with 262 lbs, and a low carb diet (The Zone). I was on 1500 met, lost 25 lbs (15% of my body weight) and did not regain my period withing 3 month. I talked to Dr. Glueck and Perloe at a PCO conference. Both said that I should have started my period after 10% body weight loss. They also stated that this is quite common. Dr. Glueck said that he likes to keep all of his patients on 2550, and he even goes up to 3000, if he has to and the patient can handle it. I took the advise back to my doctor, who upped my dose. It did work! My first cycles were still long appart, but they have been getting closer and closer since. So far I’ve lost 44 lbs, by somewhat following the Zone diet. I’ve read some studies, were they said that it sometimes takes up to a year to see the full effects of met. So hang in there, and go low carb, it will help you a lot. — Katharina dav…@german-usa.com 35/5.9/C0-nt/met2550 262(March 15,99)/218
