Err… what exactly is "Metformin"
Question:
Hi, I know this may sound stupid but what exactly is Metformin? Can anyone with PCO take it? How does it help? and how easy is it to get from your doctor? Thanks for all your help Serena

In a small nutshell, metformin (aka Glucophage) helps your body to utilize insulin more efficiently. As a result, your body won’t be compelled to make too much insulin, and there won’t be excess which can cause pcos or various pcos symptoms (for many). To respond to both your threads (this and the one about lo-carb), there are at least 2 ways one can control their insulin. a) metformin (enables your body to use it’s insulin more efficiently at the cellular level, eliminating the need for your body to make too much of it) b) control of carbohydrate consumption (minimizes insulin production, since insulin elevates when carbs are consumed) a combination of both a) and b) is probably optimal. However, many with PCOS are not insulin resistant. There is much to be learned about PCOS and I don’t think there are two of us alike. But for many, there does seem to be some sort of insulin connection. -Kay
