Frustrations

Question:

Very true, the food looks worse when you write it down. I was wondering, did you like make certain restrictions, like once a week I can drink a can of soda, for example. Or write out a week plan of things or eat, or just buy what’s healthy. I’m a junk food junkie, I admit it, and it’s so hard not to eat ‘easy fast food’ sometimes.

Response:

Now that you mention it, I did keep a journal.  When you know you have to write it down, you think twice before eating it.  800 calories worth of Twinkies looks so much worse on paper… Sara

Response:

I just kept a ton of fruit and All Bran around.  And diet Kool-Aid in all flavors.  It has no caffeine and tastes really good.  I just ate stuff in its natural state because I was (and am) too lazy to cook and clean up :) . Sara

>I have lost 45lbs on a low carb diet

Has a low carb diet helped to alleviate any of your pco symptoms?  I have heard that this can help lower insulin levels in some people.  Has it helped to regulate AF?

Response:

It’s hard to tell because I had been taking Clomid.  I have noticed that I have more energy, not as tired anymore.  Moving is such a chore now.  I will keep you all posted on how it is going now that I have stopped Clomid. (although doctor put me on a progesterone pill) Wendy

Response:

Thanks! :) I’m so happier for you! Did you have a plan or journal to help you with your eating habits? I have about 20 lbs. to lose.

Response:

I have lost 45lbs on a low carb diet and 20lbs on Redux for a total of 65lbs. Wendy 235(my starting weight before Redux) 215 (my starting weight before low carb) 170 (my current weight) 135 (my goal weight

Take heart, stranger things than us bearded ladies losing a few pounds DO happen :) !!! My PCOS got really bad for a while in college, and I got to my highest weight, around 175 lbs (I’m 5′5").  I was totally depressed ( I am an actor, so everyone puts so much emphasis on my looks), and I decided I was going to change my eating behavior.  I’d been caving in to every craving, so I just buckled down and ate only fruits, veggies and tofu for three months.  I took Chromium supplments and went to bed at 8:00 PM every night that I didn’t have rehearsal (with Melatonin, which is soooo good) so I wouldn’t get bored and start eating.  By the time my show went up just 8 weeks later, all of my costumes were WAY too big, and the costume shop had a hissy fit ;) .  I was down to 150 lbs!  This motivated me to keep going until school got out a month and a half later, and by then I was at 137 lbs!   That summer, I decided that 137 was good enough for me.  I started taking some Dexatrim to help curb my appetite so I could eat "real" food again in smaller portions.  Before I ate TONS of fruits, veggies and tofu, like, sometimes five peaches and four apples in a day, but it was all healthy food, so I still lost weight.  My sweet tooth had improved, and I fell in love with my husband.  That zapped seven more pounds by Sept.  I’ve maintained 125 to 130 for two years now. I try to avoid complex carbs because they give me a headache and make me nauseous…and fat.  Sometimes I have a baked potato, though.  It’s my favorite food.  I only eat chicken from the health food store because of the growth hormones in grocery store chicken.  I have a breast mass (benign) that swells up horribly whenever I eat hormone-produced chicken, so I think it is EVIL!!! Lots of grilled veggies.  Lots of Campbell’s Tomato Soup…lots of SOUP because it is so satisfying!  Whatever fruits are in season.  Reduced fat frozen yogurt; a girl’s gotta live, right?  In a pinch, I get a veggie sub at Subway. It’s better than starving. Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to let you know that it CAN be done.  If I could go back with what I know now, I’d talk to my Dr. about Metformin instead of suffering with miserable hunger pangs for six months. Sara P.S.  Some of my PCOS symptoms DID improve with weight loss.  My cholesterol and blood pressure are lower than than of my nurse practitioner’s nine year old daughter!  I think that PCOS causes weight gain, which causes some of these other problems.  Any theories?
