Hormones in normal range and PCOS

Question:

Since my first period it always have been irregular.  I am overweight, have a lot of facial hair.  A few years ago I went through all the tests, hormones level check, ultrasound.  Everything came out normal.  No cysts on the ovaries, hormonal level in the normal range, testosterone level normal. Still, the endocrinologist made a diagnosis of "probable PCOS", probably based on my physical symptoms.  Is it possible to have PCOS and have normal hormones level, and no cysts visibles on the ovaries?  I’m confused….. DOM

Response:

Me too,  I had my hormonal level checked and an ultrasound, all was normal but yet the doctors didn’t know why I wasn’t getting any periods.  First I started out regular when I was 13 then I started to have fewer and fewer until it completely stopped.  So then I went to a gyn which refered me to an endocrinologist who diagnosed me with hypothyriodism. Ok, so then I had periods on and off for the next 6-8 years. Two years ago I was getting regular periods when I started eating better until I had a large period, it was so long that I was getting anemic from loosing too much blood, so the doctors had to try and stop the period. Well it worked but now I was back to square one with no periods. I also have facial hair, and its spreading to my chin just recently and my weight is a problem as well. Now that I have heard about pcos from Dateline and Womans Day magazine,  I am so relieved now that I know the problem. I just can’t understand why doctors don’t know about it. So I think its possible to have normal hormone levels and have these symptoms. So The Women’s Day article did get published.  The author interviewed me, but I didn’t know when it was coming out.  I’ve been wondering how the story turned out.  Which issue was it? Say, you’re in Manitoba, aren’t you?  I’m in Saskatchewan…hey there neighbour! ———–== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==———- http://www.dejanews.com/       Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

Dear Dom, It seems to me that the answer to your question is yes.  I am 47 years old and have always had "NORMAL" hormone levels, regular periods, and have 3 children with no complications but I have been diagnosed with possible PCOS also. Since this is such a new medical condition it appears that the medical profession is at a total loss as to what really causes it and how to diagose it and treat it..low carbohydrates are a good way to start with the weight problem and as far as the excess hair I have learned to live with it albiet it has been hard but to those who do not understand!!! that is their loss not mine!! keep the faith in yourself and know you are not alone. synigal – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Dom wrote: > Since my first period it always have been irregular.  I am overweight, have > a lot of facial hair.  A few years ago I went through all the tests, > hormones level check, ultrasound.  Everything came out normal.  No cysts on > the ovaries, hormonal level in the normal range, testosterone level normal. > Still, the endocrinologist made a diagnosis of "probable PCOS", probably > based on my physical symptoms.  Is it possible to have PCOS and have normal > hormones level, and no cysts visibles on the ovaries?  I’m confused….. > DOM

And did anyone see the article in Cosmopolitan sometime last year? That was what got me started.  Small article.  I’ll look for it and let you know which issue it was in. Perhaps I misunderstood all of the info. I have read on PCO.  I was under the assumption that it is diagnosed by the ultra sound showing the classic "string of pearls" on the ovaries and a flipped ratio of elevavated LH to FSH hormones?  Am I wrong? TIA, Tami

Response:

LH and FSH ratios being out of whack is a classic sign of PCOS…I dont belive that there is ONE definitive clinical dx symptom when it comes to PCOS  A doctor has to look at the whole picture….symptoms, history…etc…. thats why so many doctors miss the dx.  My doc was certain that I had it even before he did any blodwork. My symptoms hx and presentation were enough for both of us,,but he did the bloodwork for Rx reasons of course  My ovaries are clear as a bell, but I have plenty of symptoms…and now..plenty of help! In response to DOM:  I was diagnosed when I was 21 with PCOS, and I too had "normal" hormone levels and no cysts on my ovaries.  But I also had facial hair, weight gain and abnormal/absent periods.   I think in some cases, it’s a process of elimination.  I was tested for everything else, including Cushing’s, and everything else was negative.  Since the rest of my symptoms "fit," the diagnosis made sense.   Now all I have to do is find a PCOS-friendly RE in Seattle (not easy!). Good luck to you!  We’re all in this together! -Lauren

I started gaining weight and missing periods, I thought I was pregnant! I went to the doctorevery other month, no I wasnt pregnant, no she wasnt worried, lots of young women would LOVE not to have to deal with a period every month, consider yourself lucky! my hormone levels tested normal-so there couldnt be anything wrong. This is already too long,( I digress) I ended up 5 years and 6 doctors later diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, learning still more I am wondering if that wasnt created by a problem in the pituitary.(there I go again) simply put…yes…yes…YES…it IS possible to have "normal" blood tests and have something wrong. dont let em teel ya different! koko fnab 9/14,dx pap/foll,subtt 9/29,RAi 180mCi 11/20,begin suppression11/24
