Just diagnosed w/ PCOS

Question:

Hello everyone, I was at my gyne today and he told me I most likely have PCOS. I read an article in a magazine about it and asked him about it. I have had dark patches of skin since I was 11 years old (now I’m 22). My periods have always been completely irregular. I have been overweight all my life (now obese at 5′4", 300lbs). Thankfully I don’t have thinning hair or facial hair – yet.I have also been on and off on Triphasil-28. It’s a huge relief to know that there is a name and a reason for all this craziness. I’m especially interested in the insulin imbalance. Does this explain why I have always been a sugar-holic my whole life? I’m also really happy I found this newsgroup! My Dr. sent me for a thyroid test and another blood test that starts with a pol… something. Should I ask for a referral to an endocrinologist? He seems genuinely interested in pursuing this Jenny

Response:

First of all, congratulations on your diagnosis. There’s nothing worse than feeling crummy and not knowing what is wrong with you.
I was just recently diagnosed myself and am new to this group too. There seems to be a lot of great people on here more than ready to offer their support and thoughtful answers. Take care and the best of luck.
Sincerely, Gina

Jenny It is great to finally know why you are the way you are. I was releived to know there was a reason for my symptoms when I was diagnosed. Craving sugar is a symptom of Insulin Resistance as is the dark patches you mention. I have been diagnosed with Insulin Resistance, and from the research I have done, Insulin Resistance is the cause of PCOS. I also regularly crave sugar. Insulin Resistance and PCOS can be treated with a diabetes drug called Metformin. Having PCOS means that you are at an increased risk of diabetes, and I would recommend getting a Glucose Tolerance test, and having your insulin levels tested.
