newbie who MISSED dateline and has question
Question:
I’m new here but I would like to respond to this question. I had an ultrasound in 95 to look for cysts. None were found then so PCOS was dismissed. In Febuary of this year I decided to have laproscopic sugury on the advice of a different doctor. He found the cysts and made the diagnosis of PCOS. I’m unsure why they didn’t show up on the ultasound but I was told my ovaries are full of them. I have the other symptoms of PCOS aswell, being overweight, excess hairgrowth (which has gotten worse the last couple of years), abnormal cycles (haven’t had one for 6 months now), skin tags, little red bumps on my chin, acne, infertility…the list goes on. My mother has the same problems as I do (although not to the extent as I), my aunt has also been diagnosed with PCOS and there are signs of it in other family members aswell. My mother saw the Dateline show Monday and we made an appointment with the doctor. He put us on Glucophage to combat the insulin problem. He would not prescribe Rezlin because of the liver problems it can cause. Before this I was always told to take BCP for the hormones (always made me cranky). I even had one Doctor tell me I was doomed to be fat and just to live with it. The things I know now that I wish I would of known then. I’m 26 and really hoping this helps. This seems like a great group. I will be coming here often. I have so much to ask and I think the best we can do is talk to others with this problem. Thanks for listening Angel

I have an appointment with Dr. James Schreiber, endrocrinologist, in St. Louis, also in the same office doing PCOS research is Dr. Valerie Ratts. I haven’t been to see him yet. Have an appointment for this coming week.

He found the cysts…>> Keep in mind, they are not "true cysts". Plus, they can come and go; they are transient. I didn’t used to have them either; now I do. I see my ovaries *often*, and the cyst patterns always change, sometimes there are just a few, sometimes there are a ton.

Dr. Kilo is in St. Louis and knows a lot about pco. He is also doing a study but it is almost over.

I just found this NG from a post on alt.infertility.secondary . I missed the dateline segment. If it gets rebroadcast soon can someone let me know? My question to you all is, can you have pcod WITHOUT ovarian cysts? I was given an ultrasound several years ago to look for cysts but none was found. I have been suffering from sec-infertility for 6 years now. I have all the other symptoms except for the ovarian cysts. Anyone know of a dr in the St. Louis area? Thanks. Mary

Yes. There is no one definitive symptom critera for PCOS ( although LH/FSH ratio is the main one ). Thats why most doctors miss it… its more than a number on a lab sheet. There are women whose hormonal levels are normal but exhibit all the classisc symptoms. Its a history, presentation, and a "big picture" if you will. best of luck. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Just Me, Lisa. I think so….. I had a pelvic ultrasound years ago by an ob/gyn and the results were inconclusive so he ruled out PCOS. My current physician said that does not patter, that the symptomology and labwork both support PCOS. Some people only have the cysts, and few, if any noticeable symptoms. There are so many variations in the number of, and severity of symptoms, that a doctor really needs to look at the "big picture" to make a proper diagnosis.
