overweight and pco ??

Question:

I was wondering if you could tell me if me being overweight contributes to PCO or if the PCO is causing me to be overweight. I have tried many healthy diets with exercise and have lost very, very little. I even had a friend workout at the gym with me for support. We went 3-4 times/week and charted our exercise repetitions and our weight together…no luck with that either. My gyn. didn’t explain much, so I am hopeing for a referral to an RE (if we have them around here) ANY info would be appreciated, as we are trying to get pregnant and I would LOVE to loose weight before hand. I am presently on Clomid 50 mg x 5 days. Thanks in advance. -Debbie-

I can’t answer in definite, but I can relay experience.  I am also overweight, and have never had much luck losing weight regardless of what diets I tried.  I even tried going to an aerobics class, 4-5 hours a  week for 18 months, and only lost 5 pounds.  I also watched my eating the entire time.  Most everyone who knows me wonders how I can be fat judging by what I eat.  I tend to eat very little fat (all visibale fat is removed, and I cook with just PAM or its equivelent), I rarely eat fried foods, and I love vegetables with lemon.  I diet almost exclusively water, det soda, 1% milk (when I take the lactose tablets) and orange juice with calcium (for when I have no tablets.)  I stay away from gravies.  I have reactive hypoglycemia, so I have to avoid sugars, or I will crash twenty mintues or less later. From the little I have seen published on this, I understand that the PCO changes the hormone levels, and that it encourages the body to store fat.  My layman’s explanation would be that since the egg is never fully released, the body is continually in the "preparing for pregnancy" mode, which would include storing reserves to adequately provide for the baby and the mother during gestation. For someone without PCO, once the egg is released, the "preparing for pregnancy" is over, and the storing of fat stopped until the nest egg is ready.  IMHO of course. —  Rebecca

Many women have had great success with low-carb dieting (Zone, CAD, Atkins).  The consensus seems to be that most women w/ PCOS have an underlying problem of Insulin Resistance and by eating less carbohydrates your insulin is more controlled and many symptoms are eased/reversed. Hi  I have PCO and am also overweight.  I have been found to have insulin resistance and I was taking glucophage to combat that which in turn seems to be reversing my PCO symptoms. Janice

Yes, PCO contributes to the fat. Most all pco’ers are overweight–there are exceptions ato this of course. From the pco e-mail lists, most have found success loosing some weight by tryin low-carb diets like the zone or CAD. Some found them to restrictive so they took these diets and personalized them and are having luck. The point is to just cut down on the carbs…now dont cut down to much cause that would be bad for your system. If you look on Debra’s Infertility and PCO links page–toward the bottom of the site you will find some info on diff. low-carb diets that may be useful. Hope this helps Lori
