PCO???
Question:
My doctor a few years ago said that I may have PCO. I have all of the hormonally related conditions, weight gain, facial hair, very erratic periods….I had it all except for no evidence of ovarian cysts. About 2 years after the diagnosis of "symptoms consistent with PCO" I had a pain in my side and an ultrasound confirmed that I had a cyst on my right ovary. The doctor couldn’t feel it and now I don’t know if more have come up or what’s going on. My periods are still erratic (it actually surprised me this month cause it came 1 day EARLY), I’m growing a beard and the weight is still coming. I’m 24 years old and VERY much want to have a family one day. My sister was just diagnosed with PCO too and will need a hysterectomy (she has fibroids in her uterus too). She is 36 and has two almost grown children. Does anyone have any words of encouragement for me or any suggestions for what to do about the symptoms or things to ask my doc?? Tina
Response:
You do NOT have to have cysts to have PCOS. And you can have ovarian cysts and not have PCOS It is a SYNDROME – a collection of symptoms….outward and inward…. There are even some women whose lab reports are WNL and still have outward symptoms… You can either ask your doctor to widen his view of your disease…or find a new doctor…. He works for YOU. The dx for this "disease" should be based more on family history and patient presentation than numbers on a sheet….or the results of an ultrasound. Although tests can confirm it…they , in my opinion, can’t negate it either. You have to look at the whole picture. Just Me, Lisa. My doctor believes that I really do have it even though I don’t have any irregular hormonal levels or cysts. I guess I was experiencing a little self doubt about the diagnosis. I go back to see him in September and I’ll ask him a little more about. Any recommendations on treatments for it????? How can you control the symptoms effectively??? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -LEGGGS wrote in message >You do NOT have to have cysts to have PCOS. I was recently diagnosed with it as well although the doctor didn’t give me much information on it… does it ever go away or is it a permanent thing? My guess is permanent… Thanks, Melissa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -LEGGGS wrote in message <19990222155831.16588.00001…@ng147.aol.com>… >You do NOT have to have cysts to have PCOS.
