No, I know some type 2 diabetics who are thin. Most may have a weight  problem, but not all, so it is the same with PCOS. I must have had PCOS since age 11 and was thin or average weight for many years, but still had the classic symptoms. I only gained weight suddenly in 94 and even then it is not as much as many Cysters gain.  Even so, I am type 2 diabetic, whereas many heavier people are not.  So you don’t have to be heavy to have insulin resistance, though many Cysters do.  ^—^ Cathy { ‘ . ‘ }       `  Those who play with cats must expect to be scratched. 4Cysters: http://pages.ivillage.com/bh/cystercat Other pages: http://peaceonearth.faithweb.com http://littlec.faithweb.com http://www.i-love-cats.com/meow/cat

Most are overweight.  I think I’ve read somewhere that 20% are normal weight.  IR usually leads to weight gain as it progresses. — Katharina 35/5.9/C0-nt/met2550 262(March 15,99)/218

Response:

Obesity is not "mandatory" for IR.  I’m IR and 5′5" 130lbs. > Is obesity a ‘mandatory’ characteristic of insulin > resistance?   is it possible to be thin and insulin > resistant?(without suffering from disease associated with > thinness… hyperthyroidism etc.)

Hi,     If I remember correctly you do not have to be overweight to be diagnosed with IR. Gina, your at a good weight. I’m 5′ 6" too and was told that 150-155 is average weight for my height. Although I am 20lbs overweight ( My Insulin was 23 but is down between 10-12 now with help from Metformin 1700mg a day. Good luck:) Karen :) "J.R.S" <jso…@mindspring.com> wrote in message
