I am not exactly sure how this can happen but it has been known to happen. Maybe people get pregnant on bcp because the bcp they are taking aren’t the right prescription for them or maybe they have forgotten to take a pill for a few days.

Response:

To add to the below.  It can take a month or so to kick in so many people who don’t continue using another method of birth control for the first while can become pregnant.  Also, no method is 100% except for abstinence (and untreated PCOS! *laugh*) In article <20000328233954.02158.00003…@ng-fc1.aol.com>, kelso1…@aol.com (KELSO 1121) wrote: > >(XKristenV) > >How can you get pregnant on a birthcontrol pill? that makes no sense. > I am not exactly sure how this can happen but it has been known to happen. > Maybe people get pregnant on bcp because the bcp they are taking aren’t the > right prescription for them or maybe they have forgotten to take a pill for a > few days.

Hello.  I’m nikki, and about 6 months ago I was diagnosed with PCOS. I’ve probably had it for about 4 years, and I’m 17 right now.  I first knew something was wrong when I went from being able to eat just about anything without gaining significant amounts of weight, to gaining about 30 pounds over the course of 3 months.  Before being diagnosed, I was being treated for symptoms of the central problem.  I was on Celexa and Paxil (at two different times) for depression, and went on Acutane twice for my acne, only to have it come back 4 months later.  When I went to the OBGYN, she took some blood tests and found that I had pcos, and put me on Tri-Cyclene birth control to try and regulate my periods and balance my estrogen level with my testosterone level.  I went to an endocrinologist, who has put me on 1700 milligrams of Glucophage a day. I suppose it’s supposed to help with metabolism.  I was wondering…have any of you been on glucophage for this?  and are there any young pcos ‘victims’ on this newsgroup?  I’d like to get in touch and share experiences. Thanks, nikki

Response:

Nikki,   I have been on glucophage for my PCOS before.  I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 21 and I am now 23.  You should check out the teen pco page at www.pcoteen.org.  They are coming out with a lot of programs for teens and young women. Heather

Hi Nikki, Just a question – Are you still on those birth control pills?  Because those are one of the very WORST brands for treating PCOS and can actually make it worse.  Check with your endocrinologist but Demulen is one that is often recommended and worked wonders for me. hey nikki! I am 21 years old w/ pcos. I think that everyone in this NG is either on Glucophage or trying to be so I think you’re good…The other name for Glucophage is Metformin…you’ll see it alot here. I dont know much about this still, I too was recently diagnosed and havent found a treatment that will work yet. Birth control freaked me out!..I went nuts a little from them but my doc is an idiot and wants to get me pregnant now. I think cause I am on the state health plan and she’ll get the cash from my pregnancy. But anyways! she did say she’d let me try Metformin/Glucophage and see what happens. As far as I  know, it is used to slow  symptoms and to decrease your chance of diabetes. You do know that pcos and diabetes is closely related right?…That is my concern. Well anyone…If I am wrong please correct me and Nikki, good luck..feel free to write me whenever you want! I got pregnant while taking Demulen!  Go figure!  Couldn’t get pregnant for 8 years, but 6 months after starting Demulen I get pregnant!  But I lost weight while on it, and felt better.  Fewer migraines. –Becky ************************************************************************* The day Microsoft makes something that doesn’t suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners. ************************************************************************* – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -<jen…@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:8bo67p$e27$1@nnrp1.deja.com… > Hi Nikki, > Just a question – Are you still on those birth control pills?  Because > those are one of the very WORST brands for treating PCOS and can > actually make it worse.  Check with your endocrinologist but Demulen is > one that is often recommended and worked wonders for me. > Jenn > In article <38DEA366.CD6E5…@pacbell.net>, > Nikki <labyc…@pacbell.net> wrote: >  When I went to > > the OBGYN, she took some blood tests and found that I had pcos, and > put > > me on Tri-Cyclene birth control to try and regulate my periods and > > balance my estrogen level with my testosterone level. Hi Nikki, I’m 17 too.  I also took Orthotricyclen…and it made PCOS worse. I am trying to get onto glucophage right now, I’m waiting for tests to come back though and then I’m going to see the endocrinologist to see if he will put me on it.  I’ve tried 5 different kinds of birth control pills, all made my symptoms worse, and provera made me a mega-b-i-t-c-h.  Spironolactone is helping my hair problem a lot, but as far as I know glucophage supposedly helps with the other things. — Lindsey C.
