Spironolactone
Question:
Hello Are there any side effects to this drug? I was prescribed this 3 days ago. Someone has told me that it is not safe to take if you are trying to conceive, yet my RE said it was ok until conception….I am not trying to get pregnant at the moment. I am trying to lose 40 pounds. I may be put on Metrodin if my insulin levels are high. That test is on the 30th. Any info would be very helpful Janice
Response:
Hi, I take Spironolactone (have for the past 5 years) and have had no undesireable side effects. Spironolactone is used primarily as a blood pressure medication. However, researchers noticed that it had the ability to reduce the level of testosterone (thus helping the hirsute) plus it has mild diuretic properties, helping to reduce the bloating that many PCO patients experience. So, if your blood pressure is already normal then you should not notice any significant change — mine is normal and I’ve had no problems. The anti-bloating properties have been great, and it has helped my thinning hair, acne, etc. > Hello Are there any side effects to this drug? I was wondering if anyone has had any negative side effects from this medication. I have never taken this for PCO before but just received a script from my doctor. He said it will also help my blood pressure, which has been slightly elevated. Thanks! Karen

Do any of you find that this works for your symptoms? Would you say that Provera and Spironolactone sound like a good starting point, or should I just request Birth Control Pills with a possible later addition of spironolactone. My endo isnt really fond of Metformin and says all the studies have just examined it for fertility, not control of symptoms. TIA

Metformin is NOT just for fertility! After taking it for three months, my cholesterol dropped by 22 points, and my triglycerides by over a 120 points! The metformin by itself also dropped my testosterone by 27 points, putting it well within normal. My doctor felt confident that over time, with my hormones now normal, that my hairiness and other male-associated symptoms would improve, but he also gave me a prescription for spironolactone to "speed things up." Alas, I never got to try it, though, because you shouldn’t take it when pregnant, which I turned out to be (so yes, metformin *is* good for fertility, too!). I’m totally convinced that metformin is the way to go for *anyone* with PCOS. If I were not pregnant (or not trying to become so), I would give spironolactone a try, but I would never give up my met. I have to agree with Reb here. Metformin is beneficial even if you’re not TTC. BCP will not treat your PCO. It will just mask your symptoms and some BCP can actually even make it worse. If your doctor is not willing to prescribe you the Met, then maybe you need another doctor. If you don’t treat your PCO, over time you’re going to be at a higher risk for stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type II diabetes. With Provera and Spironolactone, you’re just treating your symptoms. It’ll be better for you in the long run if you treat your PCO at the root cause — insulin insensitivity. Good luck to you. — Nicole ===> remove "devnull" from my address to reply <===

Hi Tina, I definitely have PCO, and my endocrinologist put me on 100 mg to start (2 pills 2 times a day). My testosterone level came down by a third, but it’s still Too High. So he upped me to the same dosage you have. Side effects: On the 100 mg dosage, I had to run to the bathroom constantly! Now it’s not such a problem. Word of advice: if you take anything that also has diuretic properties while you’re on the spiro, you will get PAINFUL constipation!
If you have a problem, try powdered psyllium husks dissolved in water, drink lots more water and eat lots more roughage, and get plenty of exercise. I’ve had great results with it clearing up my oily skin and lessening excess hair. But when I was on 150mg, my mouth was terribly dry no matter how much water I drank and I had leg cramps. I take 100mg now (50 in the morning and 50 in the evening) and feel great.

Whatever you decide, do not go off cold turkey. I take 200mg each day and ran out a couple of weeks before my next endo appointment and began retaining water like you wouldn’t believe. I gained about 10 pounds in a week and my feet and legs swelled up. I got my perscription refilled and have lost the ten pounds in a couple of weeks, unfortunately only in my legs. I am going to stay on it for no other reason then that. If you do decide to stop this med let your doc know and be sure to work with your doc to wean youself off of it so that you don’t have problems with the transition. good luck, laura

I was on Spiro for about 3 years taking 200mg per day. My doctor told me that she didn’t see that it was doing me any good now so there was no need in continuing with it. When I was on BCP it worked great, but I haven’t been on those for a year and a half now. No need in trying to avoid a pregnancy for me (lol)… lucky me… I have the infertility along with every other symptom. Anyway, just thought I’d give some input. I tried it about 18 months ago. At the time, I was getting excessive periods, they lasted for 10 days, and I would only have a 12/14 day break inbetween them. When I took the Spiro, I started getting periods lasting 14 days, and would only get a 3/4 day break in between – I found the situation unbearable, so came off it, and a few months later managed to get put on Metformin. however, my younger sister, who also has PCOS, (and unlike me doesn’t get any periods at) tried metformin the same time as me, but couldn’t handle it- she kept passing out. She started Spiro 2 weeks ago, and has had her first period (started yesterday) in nearly 2 years. So I guess what I am trying to say is that different thing suit different people, so it is worth a go… Toast. "PHOBIA" <cathys…@hotmail.com> wrote in message

I’ve been on spiro as well as metformin for over 2 years now. I would say the spiro definitely made some difference in hair growth. I’ve started using Vaniqa recently and noticed more improvement, so I’m thinking of stopping the spiro and seeing what happens. I just don’t want to have to go back to shaving every day.
As for side effects, spiro is a diuretic so I’ve had problems mainly with my mouth being dry all the time. (I do drink a lot of water, otherwise I’d probably be even more dehydrated.) Spiro lowers your blood pressure, and mine was high-normal, so it was helpful for me, but if your blood pressure is low-normal it could cause it to get too low. — —->Sagittaria<—- !gc (http://alumni.cse.ucsc.edu/~dylan/mgc/)

I take aldactone (spiro) at 100 mg twice per day, so 200 mg/day. I tried the generic but it didn’t work as well, so i stick with aldactone. I also take glucophage (metformin) at 2550 mg/day. Vaniqa is a prescription cream that inhibits hair growth. There are somee other posts on the group about it, you should be able to find them on google. It’s worked very well for me. I’ve been on Spironolactone (2 50 mg pills a day for a total of 100 mg a day) for the past 3 years. My acne is completely gone. I mean _gone_ it is rare for me to get even a small blemish. My skin is also smoother, my pores are smaller. I never really had all that much excess hair, but the facial hairs I do get on my chin are pale and white now, not coarse and black. My testosterone level went from in the 80’s to a normal reading in the 20’s. It’s worked very well for me, and I’ll probably continue to take it for a long time. I also take 1000 my of Glucophage XR and 30 mg. of Actos a day to keep my blood glucose stable and at normal levels. I have a problem with the Actos causing fluid retention and scalp hair thinning, but I am seeing better results with having periods again by taking less Glucophage with a little Actos than with a higher dose of Glucophage alone, so at least for now, I have to deal with thinning hair and swollen ankles and feet. Unfortunately, I can’t really take a diuretic for the swelling because combined with the spironolactone, it would make my blood pressure dangerously low. I’m hoping to have lost enough weight to be off the Actos by this time next year. I’ll certainly not miss it, but I really need it to make sure I have periods most months to minimize cancer risks from skipped periods and thickened uterine lining. But, over the past few years, I have had great results with Spironolactone. Tracy ***Remove the word: nospam from my address to e-mail me***

Sare, I just saw your post about the amout of spiro you are on and am amazed that it has done anything at all from what I’ve read about it. The minimum recommended dosage is 100mg/day. At 75mg/day some women may see some affects of the drug but it is very rare. There is information about this subject in a book called " the good news about womens hormones" (at least I think that is the name, i don’t have it in front of me now). Anyway, I know that I would have just been throwing money away if I was on 50mg/day. Currently I have just been increased to 150mg/day and hope to see more change than I have in the previous year and a half at 100mg/day. Thanks for letting me but in. Laura Ketchersid Austin, TX

I only started to notice effects when my Spiro dose was increased to 150mg/day; even at that dose, the effect was only moderate. I considered a further increase in dose; I’ve heard of (a few) other women taking 200mg/day. Eventually decided against it, and went off the med completely. I’m just not comfortable taking long-term meds for what is basically a cosmetic problem. I had some electrolysis– effective, but a very slow process. Laser treatment is meant to be much faster.
