The cramps, potassium, etc., thing one more time
Question:
What sort of damage does too much potassium do? After all the comments yesterday I’ve cut back to two 99mg tablets. As for the Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc, where can I find out what quantities of each is best. Thanks again, and I’ll leave this subject alone now. Jim
Response:
Potassium is only dangerous is you are on a "potassiums sparing" blood pressure medication. In that case they can build up to dangerous levels in the body and mess up heartbeat. However, if you are not on such medication the body will dump excess via your urine.
Response:
Earl Mindell says Potassium can cause toxicity at an intake of 18g or more. Some one would have to be popping Potassium every half hour to get to that level. Russ
Response:
Potassium is being used to put Timothy McVah to death (stops the heart). Do a normal dose. NoSalt quarter teaspoon is about right.

I was a little shocked to read this. I’m on a blood pressure medication, how can I tell if it is a problem or not; and if it is, what can happen? Dennis
Response:
I’m on Spironolactone for my PCOS symptoms. It is also used as a blood pressure medication and is potassium sparing. I am not sure because of this how much potassium to take on Atkins. Perhaps I should give his center an email and see what they saw. I doubt it is addressed in the book because to my knowledge I haven’t seen anything about it but I could be wrong. Response:
Jamie, If you are on potassium sparing meds you have to get professional advice. The potassium sparing meds keep the body from excreting excess potassium, as a result if you supplement, potassium can build up to an excess and mess up nerve conduction and the other things it participates in. Didn’t you get some kind of sheet with the meds warning you about it, or is this yet another case of idiot doctors prescribing things without informing the patient of how they work?
