A new name for type 2?

Question:

I’ve just been reading a report – it’s a few years old now – commissioned by Diabetes UK when it was still the British Diabetic Association. It’s about the prevalence and cost of type 2, and public perception of it. It says that although type 2 is the overwhelmingly dominant form of diabetes, it has been in the shadow of type 1 in terms of research and public perception. Mention "diabetes", and most people think insulin injections. That’s if they’re not thinking "can’t eat sugar". When asked at what age diabetes was most likely to be diagnosed, most people said under 35. The real answer is – the oldest age group among the choices given, since most diabetes is type 2, and prevalence increases with age. So, I was wondering whether type 2 should be renamed as something else, which didn’t include the word "diabetes". What do you think, and have you got any suggestions? I’d like to suggest ODMMIFU (stands for "Oh dear, my metabolism is f***ed up"). Barbara

Response:

How about "Exploding Arse Syndrome"? Since most T2s going onto Metformin will experience it… Ratty

LOL

Can’t remember if Pete had moods on Metformin. Did you, Pete? He could get quite moody (unlike him) just prior to diagnosis. He did get stomach cramps on Metformin – not squits, but real, awful stomach pains. He tried it for a month, then doc put him on Gliclazide. Renia – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I remember my dad had a huge problem with Metformin – he also got really angry and moody while taking them – but I haven’t had the moods with metformin at all – anyone else had those?? How about "Exploding Arse Syndrome"? Since most T2s going onto Metformin will experience it… Well when I was about to start on metformin, I mentioned the side effects to my Dad (who has been taking it for years) and he looked at me blankly. It seems he has never suffered. Or maybe it’s counteracted in his case by one of the other drugs in the cocktail he’s on. I did get umm…. rather liquid side effects, but they wore off after a couple of weeks. Barbara — "Multimedia? As far as I’m concerned, it’s reading with the radio on!" My wife says I have quite rapid mood swings since diagnoses I cant of course comment , as being a man makes me right 150% of the time ;-) it wouldnt be fair on her ;-) Okay I do recognise I have started losing my temper for what seems NO reason at all, since I started on the metformin. I try to bite my tounge and count to 10, which normally helps. Im not sure if its the medication or just a combination of factors. 1) Lost my job (After 20 years) 2) Was Diagnosed Type 2 3) Im a Gemini (always known for mood swings) 4) Reduction in sugar intake (Doctor seems to beleive that the fall in BG levels can cause mood swings in some people, any one care to comment) Perhaps we could do an online survey on the possible phenomena of mood altering meds ;-) — DeanC  Age 35 T2 – 27/12/01 6′ 1"  13st 09lbs (and falling) 1 x 500mg Metformin/day
