Stein/Leventhal Syndrome or PCOS Disease

Question:

Many years ago I was diagnosed with Stein/Leventhal.  No one suggested I take Metformin or any other Diabetes meds to reduce my blood glucose.  If I had been taking that drug, is there any chance that I might have become pregnant?  No other remedial therapies were suggested at the time that diagnosis was made.  I feel so disappointed that nothing was done to help me conceive.  Please respond

<<Many years ago I was diagnosed with Stein/Leventhal.  No one suggested I take Metformin or any other Diabetes meds to reduce my blood glucose. The use of insulin lowering meds to control/alleviate PCOS is rather new (2 years), and is still unapproved by the FDA.  Is one of those "off label" uses, for now. << If I had been taking that drug, is there any chance that I might have become pregnant? Is possible, but no guarantees.  Depends on if you have other factors, how you respond to the meds, etc.

Hi, I have pcos too and am currently on metformin. There is a chance that you could have conceived while on the met. due to the fact that a large majority of women with insulin resistance and PCO resume normal ovulatory cycles, such as in my case. I have been on it three months and have ovulated each month, although I am not pg yet. There also could be other factors involved with you conceiving so even if the met did work for you it doesnt necc.mean you would get pg. The reason why met was never mentioned to you awhile ago, was because it is very new and experimental. Most dr’s don’t really know much about using insulin lowering drugs to treat pco, the good news is that some do. I was blessed to have a RE who knew about it and put me on it. Other dr’s you have to hound, show studies to and educate them about what you know to get on it. It is not too late for you to see your dr. about the met. If you need any info about met. please feel free to email me. God Bless! shelley
