Hi Sushi, That is totally brilliant, m8! Well done. For myself, if I got that, I would not ask the doc`s opinion; I`d just go ahead with the reduction. If it is as good next time, then you might think about leaving the meds altogether. — As always, wishing you well Al, Melton Mowbray, UK Control Beef Lente 1x Low-Carb http://www.diabetesincontrol.com http://www.iddtinternational.org/uk "Do, or do not. I did not explain myself very well. I meant I agree with your idea of reducing the meds, I think it`s a good idea. Halve them both, and test extra times to make sure you stay in the 5% club. I think you will stay in the club, because I also have faith in you. Next A1c you`ll know whether to stay on the halved dose or drop the dose completely. As you know, exercise will help, and so will dropping your weight, but at the moment I think it is likely that you are converting fat cells into muscle cells, so your weight looks the same. Is that right? because you will know better than I can. If I remember, you are or were an body-builder? So you know more about how to exercise, but maybe I know more about how helpful with the insulin resistance thingy the extra muscles can be. Then again, maybe I don`t, because you sure are making good progress with this beast we got. Great results, well done!
Can’t comment on the drugs as I do not use those. I would give the diet side some attention from what you say – probably feeling hungry and maybe not enjoying the new foods as much as the old? Makes it much harder to keep to the diet if you don’t enjoy what you eat. I like some of the low calorie pasta’s they have got bulk, are low calorie (and carb.) with a low glycemic index. Anyway, good luck and keep up the good work. Pete F

You see I also have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) – makes it harder for me because I have hormones going all over the place, lots of pain and the insulin resistance is a bit worse than with diabetes alone. They’re quite similar but we tend to get deposits of insulin in the soft areas of our skin because there’s too much and it doesn’t move around – so giving me Gliclazide isn’t really what I need – I need Avandia……. but I’ll be discussing that with the specialist.

Yeah I know they’re not good numbers but I can’t get them down any further without the help of my specialist and I have another 3 weeks or so before I can see him. I have a cr*p doctor who only gave me Gliclazide one a day – and he said it wasn’t enough, but decided he wasn’t prepared to give You see I also have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) – makes it harder for me because I have hormones going all over the place, lots of pain and the insulin resistance is a bit worse than with diabetes alone. What is it you think the specialist will do to help you? i don’t even know what a specialist does. and why does it take so long to see him? my old primary doctor was very old ide say close to 80 even tho he looked in his 60’s. i seen some awards hanging on his wall and from the dates on that he had to be either in his early 80’s or late 70’s. he always had patients lined up but took a liking to my wife and I. we lived a block away and soon as we would call he would say come on down. i was very happy with him over the years – he seen me in my prime and my worst. he was a little too relaxed and i noticed his nurse would stand over him with a watchful eye. i guess he wasn’t what he used to be. i wish i could have seen him then and get another just like him. i had a cyst removed from my back a few years ago. this thing grew in not out. being i was even bigger at the time this thing was enormous. it was the size of big avocado and was as ugly as this creature i seen in a movie years ago. i think the movie was Big trouble in Tokyo or something. Goldie Horns boy friend was in it i forgot his name. Kurt Russell.. yea that’s it. it was a pretty good family type comedy. well anyway it was that ugly. Er Sushi, Metaphorically speaking you just caught me with my pants down. Insulin I know, sulphonylureas I know, but very little about the other meds. The best I can manage, is Metformin in about 17% of cases causes gastric upsets if started at a high dose. Metformin attacks insulin resistance, so it is very unlikely to cause a hypo. Metformin helps to protect the heart, and it might protect the arteries and veins, bit I don`t know for sure. I think Ratty will know a lot more than me. — As always, wishing you well Al, Melton Mowbray, UK Control Beef Lente 1x Low-Carb http://www.diabetesincontrol.com http://www.iddtinternational.org/uk "Do, or do not. Metformin lowers blood glucose levels by decreasing excess production of glucose by the liver and increasing the uptake of glucose by cells. In the major UKPDS study, it was the only drug that reduced diabetes-related death rates, heart attacks and strokes. Metformin shuts off the liver’s over production of glucose. It reduces the amount of insulin needed. I wouldn’t advise you to drop the Metformin unless you were on a lower carb diet. I think you would be setting yourself up for failure if you drop the Met while still having the amount of carbs you do. But that is only *my* opinion.

Might : get rid of mhd as well. i noticed i am ingnored mostly in that group. I dont mind that as you have seen I cant really help you guys much that know so much more than i do. some however have contributed to some of my threads for that i am greatful. better to be ignored than insulted. Prissysilly and Asleepybrain were two, but several : told Prissysilly she was wrong. Do you remember Colleen, who attacked you, I : attacked her for it, and now she is defending you. So some learn. no i have not seen colleen defend me at all. yes she is speaking the truth about the fight those of us on meds take. while i am not a drinker and have not been for some 13 years. the days i did drink till the sun came up where about 3 to 4 times a year. i used to look foward to those days very much ( they are now gone ) i used to love drving around littly italy sampling all the goodies. china town as well. lol those days are not over but – well you know. : : Anyways, there is nothing wrong with your posts here on asduk, Al i dont play the same way they do. name calling to them is fun i believe they feed on it. the posts i must make to make them feel the way they make me feel – will make even me cringe. I did not ask for this fight and i hope you do not hold the way i play back against me. but if that day ever comes simply start to ignore me or notify me via email. and I should : hate to see you change, and Peter has told you he has learned a lot from a : thread about exercise motivation that you started. Keep with *us*, Sushi, : you know you are welcome. I didnt mean i was thinking of leaving. but they get great satifaction out of turning people who get along with me against me. and if the day comes that you tell me off or mention that you want nothing to do with me – that will please them very much. thats not all tho I would also feel the loss of your friendly posts. by the way i realized to day that you have the same name as one of my most respected people i have ever met. he was my boss for 8 years. one of the reasons he was so special to me. he was i think in his 80’s one of the most inteligent men i have ever met. i can honstly say if i had to pick a person to follow and be like.. it would be him. he is the one who helped me pick my first computer. this guy had the best of old school and new school in him. he has no idea of course in 8 years i only talked to him a months worth but what an ever lasting impresion he made on me. Will you help me to understand how metformin works
Here’s a killer. The medical profession doesn’t know either! All that is known is its method of working, not the exact mechanics. It helps lower insulin resistance, and supresses the liver-dump function. Metformin doesn’t stimulate insulin production; it helps the body use its insulin better. So it’s not a hypo-induing treatment. and what someone has to do to be less dependent on it?
Lose weight, exercise and avoid carbs in the first instance. But remember you will need to monitor carefully, and this condition can be progressive. So coming off isn’t impossible by any means, but don’t bet on it being a forever thing. you don’t have to get into the heavy tech stuff unless you want to. i just want to understand it a little bit.
That’s more or less it AFAIK. Nothing techy about it. Ratty — www.flyingrat.net

Turner’s Babe said this… Why do I think he can help me? Because he’s an endocrinologist aswell as a diabetologist and will find out about what will and what won’t affect me, the reasons for it etc. I’m not satisfied with just seeing a doctor, I want the specialist (who is the top of his profession) to sort me out. My choice and I’m sticking to it.
Chances are he’ll also be up to date with the very latest stuff too…I’ve got a good’un Ratty — www.flyingrat.net

: Hi Sushi, : Yes, I noticed, and I was so disgusted that I unsubscribed from asd. Might : get rid of mhd as well. it is my belief that is what is wrong with that group. decent people like you end up leaving. leaving it in the hands of trouble makers and idiots. when they can not think of something to fight about they make up something – even if they don’t believe it themselves. they waited for someone like Priscilla Ballme to start something so they can once again start with the insults. you have no idea how much i hate them – yes hate is a strong word i am capable of it and they have earned it. in a way i wish you wouldn’t leave that group Al. I would like to see it filled up with more people like you than what is currently infesting it. with a few people like you in that group idiots will be seen to be idiots and maybe will leave it alone for people who actually want to help and are not there because they are bored. those idiots will end up bothering people in chat rooms not in a support group where only those they like are welcome. Why does my specialist take so long to see? He’s a specialist for Imperial College (one of the very best institutes in the world I believe) and you have to catch him when he’s in the country. I refuse to see someone which I believe is mediocre – I want to see the best, I demand to see the best, and I have private medical care so that enables me TO see the best. He’s not back in the country until August. So I have my first appointment with him then. Why do I think he can help me? Because he’s an endocrinologist aswell as a diabetologist and will find out about what will and what won’t affect me, the reasons for it etc. I’m not satisfied with just seeing a doctor, I want the specialist (who is the top of his profession) to sort me out. I’d love to get one like that. BG’s at the moment aren’t that good cos I’m still waiting to see the specialist – just took it and it’s a very very bad 12.2 is that 12.2 uk numbers or is that us. if it is US come on Babe you can do better. what is it you think you are doing or not doing to get those numbers? can you change it? and most important – will you change it? get you can do it Babe just takes willpower and knowledge to be healthier and happier and live longer. its worth it. Sushi Yeah I know they’re not good numbers but I can’t get them down any further without the help of my specialist and I have another 3 weeks or so before I can see him. They’re quite similar but we tend to get deposits of insulin in the soft areas of our skin because there’s too much and it doesn’t move around – so giving me Gliclazide isn’t really what I need – I need Avandia……. but I’ll be discussing that with the specialist. Well time for lunch. im so happy today with my A1C i cant get any work done
