I am on Metformin and I’ve been getting a little dizzy lately like when I get up too fast from sitting… I told my husband about it and he asked if I was drinking enough water… Drinking water is a struggle for me, I just forget. . Dizziness that occurs when you stand up or get up too fast is very often caused by low blood pressure. It’s not necessarily dangerous, just annoying. Leah — "Boxy, but good." I definately don’t have low blood pressure… in fact until a few months ago it was high. Now it is just below the line between normal and high. I just read on a medical bb that lactis acidosis occurs in about 1 in 30,000 who take metformin and in 50% of those is fatal. What is it exactly? Can it be prevented or monitored for through testing while on the drug?? That seems scary… Val

Remember, the main use of Metformin is to control diabetes and many of the patients in the past have been elderly with health complications. Everyone over 80 on met *must* be evaluated before being placed one met, but I think most drs. do that whatever your age now. They must make sure that you have no kidney or liver disorders, since it is by these two that lactic acid is removed from the blood and passed out of the body. One important point-drink plenty of fluid and do not get dehydrated as this increases the risk. There are risks to taking any medications, such as birth control pills, they carry the riks of blood clots, etc. at about the same percentage that met does for lactic acidosis. Most medicines have some risks, but if you have healthy kidneys and liver, you are low risk. Be sure to read your package insert and learn the symptoms of lactic acidosis, just in case. I think the 50% that is fatal may be because these people seek treatment too late. Any weird symptoms should be reported to the dr. I had a dizzy spell a while back and went to the ER-better safe than sorry, but it wasn’t lactic acidosis, but a fluid imbalance. ^–^ Cathy {‘ . ‘} ` "Cats are smarter than dogs. You can’t get 8 cats to pull a sled through snow."
