Hi, just diagnosed today
Question:
After having no periods for as much as 6 months and noticing bristly hairs on my chin, I finally went to the gyn. She sent me for blood work and ultrasound, and gave me the progestin challenge. I finished it on Oct. 26; I finally got my period on Oct. 30. (still raging on now! Yikes!) Back to the doctor for the diagnosis. Definitely PCO, and my thyroid is OK. I told her about my concerns about addressing the insulin issue. She said if I wanted to see an endocrinologist, that would be fine. She gave me a 2-month sample supply of Ortho-Tri-Cyclene. I understand this may help with the acne. So I have a lot of questions: * Is an endocrinologist the best way to go? * The doctor gave me a note for my insurance company stating that the BCPs are not for contraceptive use only. Do these then become a regular prescription for which I would pay the co-pay ($10 for brand names, $5 for generics)? * If I’m not interested in being pregnant, what other avenues of treatment are available to me? Thanks very much. — LW ————————————— Web pages: http://www.op.net/~covenant ———–== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==———- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own

* Is an endocrinologist the best way to go? <Yes..It is the doctor you SHOULD be seeing in conjunction with your GYN ( make sure they work together and know what the other doctor is doing ) If you are feeling in the reproductive mode,,,,,go for a Reproductive Endocrinologist.> * The doctor gave me a note for my insurance company stating that the BCPs are not for contraceptive use only. Do these then become a regular prescription for which I would pay the co-pay ($10 for brand names, $5 for generics)? <My doctor does this as well..She makes the Diagnosis Ogliomenorrhea and I am covered by my health plan> * If I’m not interested in being pregnant, what other avenues of treatment are available to me? <Your Endocrinologist will be of the best help to you of all… Ask if he/she treats other PCOS patients. My doctor is by no means the leading authority in PCOS but he is willing to learn…even from a patient..ME!!> Hope This Helps Best of Luck ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Just Me, Lisa. Metformin can help, it will help your body to ovulate (after taking for a while). You would have to use condoms or a diaphram or something (you shouldn’t use the pill with Metformin). It can help you get to where you could get pregnant, but you can’t take it while pregnant. I just had a baby in Feb. and am not interested in having another baby for at least 2 more years, and I’ve been taking Metformin now for almost 2 months. My PCOS page (URL below) has links to several sites that will tell you about Metformin. There are several others here that are taking Metformin (glucophage) too, we can all answere some of the questions you may have. Check it out, it might be something you’d be interested in…. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
