Met for life….GTT vs C-Peptide

Question:

I had my 3 mth visit yesterday (nurse practioner, not reg Doc).   I was down a few pounds (5) – losing more inches than weight lately….although not exercising… another mystery of life.  I asked if Metformin would be with me for life. She explained..that when and if my C Peptide gets down to normal…ie the Insulin Reistance, they will lower the doseage 500mg..and see what happens with the insulin and the weight loss. If the level of C Peptide stays the same (and hopefully the weight loss), they will stick with that lower doseage for a while, and then try to lower it some more.  If it goes up..they will go back to the previous doseage and try again. I also asked about the C Peptide..Apparently what I thought I remembered from my first visits with the doc is in correct.  She said it was not a ratio between the two, but just the C Peptide itself.  It measures the insulin made in your body vs outside insulin..and if one is not on insulin, all the insulin it is measuring has been made by (you). And if it is out of the norm, he (my doc) dx you as IR But I will ask my doc when I see him.  Apparently I have been weened off him, and will see  him once a year,,and the rest of the time I will see the Nurse Practioner ( unless I req otherwise,,she said it wouldnt be a problem to req. him if I want to ).   They still both feel that the GTT is outdated..not as outdated as leeching..but they just dont do it! Best of luck to all Lisa MailTo:Leg…@aol.com p.s. Its so nice to go down a level on one of those doctor scales ( 200+something instead of 250+something… quite a rush! p.p.s. I asked for her to rx a 1000 mg Metformin 2 a day instead of 2 500 mg pills..OMG are they big…but its one less pill..right..??? :-) Just Me,  Lisa. At my last doctor appointment my doc gave me a months worth of samples of Met (which was really nice considering I pay for the out of my pocket right now), he gave me some of the 500mg pills and some 1000mg pills. He thought about just prescribing me the 1000mg pills 2x daily, but had the nurse to call the in and check on prices first. At least at my pharmacy it cost more to get the 1000mg pills than for the 500mg pills (when looking at the cost of a months worth of 2000mg a day)… You may want to check the prices where you are… yes it was nicer to only have to take 2 large pills instead of 4 smaller ones, but nicer costs more…. Of course if you have one of those $10 a prescription co-pays where your rx is always $10 regarless of actual price, then go for the 1000mg tabs :o )  We’re about to get a new insurance that will cover my Metformin with a $10 co-pay, and I may just sitch to the 1000g pills myself lol… .
