polyp on my uterus

Question:

Hello. I went for an pelvic ultrasound about a month ago. They did find a polyp on my uterus too. For what the doctors have said that this is pretty common and is nothing to be worried about. Just this week, I’ve been diagonised with PCO. I what can we do exactly for this. He said that we have 2 options. One is to try birth control pills and two is to do surgery and clean everything out manually. I hate hospitals even more than doctors and flying, so I told him that I’d try the pills, even though people in my family have had problems with the pill. He said that he didn’t want to do unnecessary surgery anyway. So now for the next 2 months we’re going to trial the pills and then see if I get my period. If not, the only other option is the surgery. Some choice huh? Well I hope this helps. Jo Ann – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I am very frightened and don’t know what to think…my vaginal ultrasound showed what my doctor thinks is a polyp on my uterus.  He will do another ultrasound in ten days to check again. Has anyone here had this and what was the outcome?  Any help or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sue ttc#1

Jo Ann, Those two things are most definitely NOt your only options in treating PCOS. Please do yourself a favor and research it on the net, talk to others on this group with PCOS and also on alt.support.pco  . . . you’ll soon find that your doctor did you no favors by telling you what he did.  He did not even give you the best options for controlling the syndrome by getting at the root of the problem.  Good luck. Im going to have a hysteroscopy done again, had a lap and hysteroscopy done approx 4 years ago. Just 2  years ago, I started spotting anywhere from 5-10 days prior to a period, this never happened to me. He will check for cysts, polyps and other stuff…..if they didnt find anything before could they possibly find something now?? Just curious, thanks for sharing your experiences. TIA, Maria

Response:

There are more options that what he gave you.  First of all, how was the PCOS diagnosed?  Did he do any blood work and were you insulin resistant? There are so many variables to PCOS that to say your only options are bcps and surgery is a response from a typically uninformed doctor.  Please don’t be offended, but we here so much these days about doctors who don’t know anything about PCOS and the first thing they want to do is stick you on the pill. If you’re ttc, then that’s not really an option. If you haven’t already, find yourself a good Reproductive Endocrinologist and mention the PCOS to him/her.  Ask for the blood work, and when you get the results, ask what your options are.  Here’s something for you to check out also: http://blues.fd1.uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm Also: http://www.ivf.com/fert.html#OVULATE Read everything you can get your hands on about PCOS and the treatment of it.  Surgery may be necessary to remove the polyp, but not for the PCOS.  I have been battling PCOS since 1978, but I have been pg three times, have two beautiful children from those pregnancies, so it is not impossible. Please feel free to email if you have any questions. Jeanette PS: Also alt.support.pco, there are a lot of informed and supportive women there also.

Response:

My RE found 2 polyps in my uterus as well.  He removed them and I am currantly pg with twins… edd 1-17-00.  Re told me that polyps could definately cause an implantation problem or m/c’s.  I had several m’c’s before they removed them. This is the longest I have carried a pg so I do think it is important to remove polyps when possible.  AJ

I had a lap last September for endo.  They also did a hysteroscopy and were going to the dye test too but they found 3 polyps in my uterus.  Only one was removed as the other two were right at the opening to the fallopian tubes and the surgeons did not want to risk scar tissue.  Because of the one being removed I had to have the dye test at a later date and be awake for it.  Polyps are usually benign and the only problem that I’m aware of them causing is that they CAN cause implantation problems. Hope this helps

They can also cause m/c.  If a fertilized egg implants, then a polyp may interfere with the growth of a fetus, depending on the location of the polyp. This happened to a friend of mine.  She had a m/c and during D&C, they found a polyp which they removed at that time.  She later went on to achieve a full-term pregnancy. Nicole
