Switching BCP's

Question:

First off let me say that I have high levels of prolactin, DHEA and testosterone.  I am taking parlodel (2 months), spironolactone (1 month) and am weaning off prednisone (2 months).  My last blood work showed the medication lowered my DHEA and prolactin levels but my testosterone levels were still a little high.  I have tried a few BCP’s before (ortho tri cyclen and one I can’t remember) but they both gave me migraines. I am currently taking Loestrin (2 months) and have only had a small migraine the first month and I was fine the second month.   Now my doctor wants to switch me to Desogen to try and lower my testosterone levels even more.  I am worried that this pill will give me migraines again because it has a higher dose of estrogen.  Maybe now that my hormone levels are more even due to the other medications I won’t have a problem with migraines.  Does anyone else have any experience with this pill or any pills and migraines?  Thanks for any info:) JP remove nospam to reply

I am currently taking Dessogen for my IVF cycle.  The first few days on it were a nightmare for me.  The headaches were pretty bad, but I managed through it and seem to be doing fine right now.  They are also letting me take an anti-nausea medicine to help counter act the effects of the b/c pill.  I was told this was a lower dose b/c pill than most. I think this pill is a bit better than most and after the first few days you should be fine. Tracy M.

Outside of the US the main BCP used for PCOS is called Dianette (or in some countries it is called Diane ED) It’s made by Schering and is a  combination of the usual oestogen component (ethinylestradiol) and cyproterone acetate which I beleive is the most effective antiandrogen available (more so than spironalactone) Often women who have a bad problem with hair or acne are also "topped up" with more cyproterone acetate. Many women have a lot of success with it although there are always people who don’t (as is the case with all bcp’s) One snag: I don’t beleive it’s licensed in North America (Idon’t think there’s any ominous reason why not, just that they haven’t got around to it?!) but it’s one to watch out for because it is front line treatment for hirsutism and acne in other countries. a…@medscape.com

When I first went back onto BCP’s a few years ago, I immediately began to get terrible headaches. My doctor told me that the BCP’s can cause one to become vitamin B-6 deficient, which in turn causes the headaches. She had me start taking B-6 supplements, starting with 50 mg/day and then raising the dosage by increments of 50 mg until the headaches went away. I found that 100 mg/day was sufficient, and have not had any problems with headaches since. I know this is due to the B-6, because whenever I stop taking it for a few days, the headaches return. She does warn not to take a higher dose than what is necessary to eliminate the headaches, beause taking more B-6 than one’s body needs can be harmful over the long term. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -JP wrote: > I have tried a few BCP’s before (ortho > tri cyclen and one I can’t remember) but they both gave me migraines. > I am currently taking Loestrin (2 months) and have only had a small > migraine the first month and I was fine the second month. > Now my doctor wants to switch me to Desogen to try and lower my > testosterone levels even more.  I am worried that this pill will give me > migraines again because it has a higher dose of estrogen.  Maybe now > that my hormone levels are more even due to the other medications I > won’t have a problem with migraines.  Does anyone else have any > experience with this pill or any pills and migraines?  Thanks for any > info:) > JP

Desogen is the BEST birth control pill for our problem.  The repro endo I went to in Houston who was doing a study on which worked the best for us found this one was the best so if you are going to do the pill take that one and only go off of it every few months when you want to have a period.  Going off the pill for a week each month doesn’t help us one bit.  We need to take it consistently to reduce the hair etc.   I learned so much about all this a few years ago.  There may be a BETTER pill but two years ago Desogen was still the best. Response:

Desogen gave me awful migraines, pretty much all through my cycle. Loestrin and Mircette were definitely the best, though they still gave me headaches during the placebo periods. Of course, I have stopped getting migraines altogether now that I’m low carbing… so it’s hard to say what might have happened had I low carbed while on any of the pills. Take care… Kathleen << Does anyone else have any experience with this pill or any pills and migraines? >>
