Hi all… I am *not* trying to get pregnant… but after running across info on PCO, I got very interested in Metformin. I have a very loosely-tied bag of symptoms and just literally persuaded my doctor to let me try a trial run of Metformin. I’ve been taking 500mg a day for five days now– I’ve got all this extra (calm) energy, my skin has just regressed about a decade in appearance and it’s so soft, and the folliculitis/body acne that’s plagued me since late childhood is getting much better. I am really amazed– the effects on skin are phenomenal. Here’s what I was experiencing: First off, there’s diabetes on both sides of the family, and particularly bad on one. I mentioned the folliculitis/body acne. I’ve had a few stray dark body and facial hairs over the past few years, and periodically whenever there’s a stressor the hair on my head sheds like an afghan hound (and I do NOT have a lot to begin with). That and my skin felt puffy, dry, and it’s looking like I’ve been holding lots of water. And a pronounced symptom (if it has anything to do with this) is a marked inability to lose weight despite drastic caloric cutbacks… and very easy, VERY easy weight gain. However, on gyn exam my gyn doc detects no ovarian cysts, and my periods have always been like clockwork– light normal, but like clockwork. A recent group of blood tests showed nothing except that I was below normal in the estrogen estrone, and low normal in estradiol. Whatever’s going on with my body, the Metformin’s definitely addressing it, so I’d encourage anyone who has some symptomology to look into this and read up on it, even if your periods are normal. I’ll just make sure I’m really diligent with the birth control next month
… still hoping for some weight loss from this. Well, that and I wish the stuff was cheaper! I’d be interested to hear other people’s experience in terms of symptom alleviation, too. Donna
