Question:
I was curious, I went looking at my local shopping centre after reading the post about the pancake waffles and atkins bake. I can only find soy flour atm, atkins bake (which I found in a store at highpoint shopping centre in Melboune Australia), which is over $30au for a small canister, is just way to expensive, as was most of the products in the atkins range that the store had. My questions: How important is it to add the soy isolate?? What is soy isolate? Can any Australians give me a clue as to where I might find it here? I will not order products off the net. Thanks Shaz in Melbourne, Australia atkins 3rd time lucky since 19th April, 2004 lb 218/214/150ish kg 99/97/70ish 5ft 4in ttc, 1500mg metformin daily pcos, insulin resistant
Response:
The Atkins mixes taste disgusting. Their pancakes have a texture like that foam they stuff couches with. You can bake much more delicious baked foods using vanilla Whey Protein Powder as a flour substitute. Google "Atkins baking mix" for over a thousand postings on the subject. The Atkins cereals are oversweetened with something that left a dreadful aftertaste in my mouth that would not quit. Also, too much soy can push a marginal thyroid right over the edge. It’s a good idea to go easy with any soy products. Google "soy poisoning" for the details. — Jenny - Low Carbing for 4 years. At goal for weight. Type 2 diabetes, hba1c 5.4. I found some references to that but no details. Does anyone know of posted recipies, instructions, etc? Any particular brand of ‘vanilla whey protein powder’? Skinny

If it wasn’t satisfactory before it won’t be now. If you quit because you were bored, you will do it again because these programs are not designed to help you succeed. If you put the weight back on, you will do it again. Start an exercise program and get a referral to a registered dietitian who will help you make sure you eat right.
thanks Patricia but I was successful from 18 to 30. From 30 to 40 I’ve tried everything under the sun, low cal low fat, atkins (moderate success), lots of exercise, and an underlying and very irritating thyroid problem as well as PCOS. I’d like to do the Optifast/Medifast again as that’s what I had the most success with. I was not bored with the program, in fact, I liked that I it was simple and uncomplicated. When I weaned back to solid foods I did very well also. When I did it before I did not live in Los Angeles, therefore I have no reference point for this area. I’m asking for a referral in the Los Angeles area of a doctor/clinic that supports this method of weight loss if anyone would be so kind. Thanks so much, Marcella

I assume that your thyroid is properly medicated, is that correct? i
Yes. Thanks. Marcella
Response:
I did Optifast in the 80s and regained the weight in about 18 months. In May, 2002 I went on Medifast (which you can now buy online or via an 800 number). I don’t want to be accused of SPAM so I don’t want to post the specifics. I lost 82 pounds between May and November. I started to exercise about 4 months into the program. On average I lost 3-4 pounds a week which for me was amazing (I’m hypothyroid). I know there are many who will tell you not to do a VLCD. . .but 15,000 doctors sell Medifast. It may not be right for everyone, but it was right for me. I not only lost the weight I felt great (except for the first week when I WAS hugry and a little woozy feeling). My doctor ran blood draws about every 6 weeks and monitored me. If you have more than 10 pounds to lose I would not recommend a VLCD without medical supervision. If you have any more questions about Medifast please feel free to ask me. Good luck.

Medifast is a bit different from Optifast. I did HMR, and was very successful, in 2000-1. HMR is very similar to Optifast. My experiences are detailed on my web site: http://brianandrobbie.com —

Hi, I’ve been following this ng for about 6 weeks now. I started Atkins July 15/03 and I lost some weight on induction but now for the last 4 weeks nothing!! I haven’t gained I just haven’t lost anything! What can I do to jump start my weight loss? I have about 25-30lbs to go. Should I restart induction?? I have PCOS and I’m trying to work out some endocrine/hormonal thingy mix ups in my body and so far I’ve seen a change from low carbing. I really am discouraged and disapointed with the stall I’m in. Karen, If you have PCOS you may find it very hard to lose weight even with low carbing, unless you add in a medicine that reduces insulin resistance. Have you talked to your doctor about Metformin or Avandia? They are now commonly prescribed for people with PCOS and may facilitate weight loss. I was unable to lose any further weight after my first six weeks low carbing five years ago, but was able to lose a whole lot of weight this past year after adding in another drug that decreased my body’s insulin resistance (a blood pressure drug, Diovan.) — Jenny 168.5/137 Low Carb 9/1998 – 8/2001 and 11/10/02 – Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * Exercise Starting from Zero * NEW! Hi Karen B! Well done maintaining under such difficult circumstances! You are so right that losing weight can make a dramatic difference to fertility in the case of PCOS, although it’s unfortunate that PCOS can also make weight-loss a little tougher. Not impossible though – don’t let anyone tell you that, especially with a program like WWs. Another side-benefit, if you ever decide to take medical interventions for fertility, is that the treatments are much safer if you are lighter and possibly more effective. Question:
I don’t know what to say. I was diagnosed with pcos almost four years ago. My husband and I have been through hell. Sorry for the language but that is the only way to describe it. What treatments are there for this? I was told that I could go on the pill and not conceive or conceive and the problem probably would correct it self. Of course to conceive we had to do all those wonderful tests! Our next step was IVF and we decided not to do that but look into adoption when we decide to have children. The most frustrating part of this whole thing was that NO ONE seemed concerned with finding a "cure" for this problem. If you don’t want to get pregnant no one seems to want to talk about it. I do not want to go on the pill because I don’t like the way I feel when I am on it. Are there any other options? What is Metformin? My fertility Dr. told me that I was in a higher risk for uterine cancer but what about the others I have heard mentioned here? Diabetes, Hypoglycemia ect? I was never told any of this. The mood swings and the bouts of depression come and go. Luckily they haven’t been really bad for awhile but they have been horrible at some points over the years. What, if anything, can help? Tiffany
Response:
There are too many treatments to list. Check out the following web site. http://www.flash.net/~debden/ Deb has tons of links for pcos. As I already have children, I’m afraid that my experience wouldn’t help you. I would recommend seeing an endocrinologist though.

Vicki, Yes, I was told by my RE that he prefers the XR to be taken all at once. I was worried about the side effects as my ob/gyn started me out splitting them up through out the day. I couldn’t handle the XR doing that. Once I started taking the 2000mgs at evening meal my side effects are a lot better…. a little tummy upset in the mornings and then I am fine for the rest of the day. That is of course if I watch what kind of carbs etc I eat. I guess every one is different. Jayde The best thing about the future is it happens one day at a time.

It’s not the diarrhea that bothers me with liquor. It’s the almost immediate headache, nausea, bloat, and associated "bloat" pains like carpal tunnel, that throbbing under your ear, and the general plodding feeling that settles in with all the aches and pains. I didn’t used to have that before going on all this medication. I take thyroid pills as well as glucophage and am sure one of them is the culprit!

Absolutely not. 1500mg is the minimum recommended dosage for women w/pcos. If your endo believes you have pcos, she put you on the appropriate dosage.

That’s interesting. I got an increase in carpal tunnel pain, as well as other aches and pains, a few days ago (right around new year’s, now that I think about it), then it went away again. I assumed my thyroid levels were dropping and I needed an increase again. I don’t take met, but I’d been on chromium and ran out a few weeks ago. I got some again the other day and I feel better now. Hm. I also started drinking chasteberry tea twice a day recently, and boy is it yucky! Too soon to notice if it does anything. AF is quite overdue again. Jeni.

Only if you’re taking the XR. But, personally I think that since the pills will only be in your system for a max of 12 hours, taking two pills, and then another 2 pills in 12 hours gives you level coverage for the entire 24 hour period.

I’m starting to feel like i’m a medicine cabinet. I have met an Endo for the first time today. Dr. Hierlihy located in downtown Ottawa (for those of you from this area) Needless to say, the appointment was plainless. lol but gosh. I have to stay on my BC.. double my dosage of Spironolactone, starting metformin 50g or 50mg? Dunno the dosage, can’t read her writing. 50g sounds like way too much. … i have to stick to my veggie vitamins to keep the amounts up to par since i miss out on veggies quite a lot. can there be more? lol What is your experience with Metformin? I haven’t been paying attention to the group lately so i’m a bit outta touch but if you could let me know that would be great. Mel.

LOL! Actually it’s 500mg most likely
You should start at 500mg w/dinner probably as a starter dose to work yourself up. > What is your experience with Metformin? I haven’t been paying attention to > the group lately so i’m a bit outta touch but if you could let me know that > would be great.
Well it can cause some diarrhea at first but if you take it slow you should be fine. Take it with a full meal, dinner preferably to start with at 500mg should work out ok. I didn’t get any side effects until I went up to 1000mg, which was 500 w/breakfast and 500 w/dinner. You could experience some tummy upset as well, most likely a reduced interest in eating. That was good for me!
Although it took some getting used to – I eat way less in portions now than I did before. The nausea fully subsided however.

She mentioned something about taking it 3 times daily.. I guess she is requesting to split the dosage in 3 as she said it should be spread within 24 hour period. Breakfast, dinner and before bed. Perhaps the effects "hit" ya less when split up? I’ll wait to see what the pharmacist makes out of this little peice of paper. lol. > You could experience some tummy upset as well, most likely a reduced > interest in eating. That was good for me!

Did you need some off time because of the side effects? Weight loss will be one of the best side effects ever.. lol but I fear missing much time at work because of the diarrhea and nausea. Thanks for your feedback

No, she probably means 500mg 3x/day. That would be 1500mg, which is the minimum effective dose for pcos found in trials. We’ll see what the bottle says when you get it back from the pharmacy, but in case it says that (which I am expecting), you should best start out at just 500mg w/dinner, for at least a full week before you move up. You’ll need to work your way up to full dose with metformin or expect to get a case of nasty diarrhea so bad you think you just ate a box full of chili peppers! The way it worked for me was: 1 week on 500mg/dinner 2 weeks with 500mg/breakfast, 500mg/dinner (1000mg day) 1 week at 1500mg (500mg/breakfast, 1000mg/dinner) At that point I took a break. The 1500mg was too much for me that soon! I was getting diarrhea so bad it was clenching in my lower back around the kidney area. Distressing! I laid off the pills for a couple weeks as it also coincided with a surgery that required me to miss proper eating for a while. When I went back on I tapered up again: 1 week on 500mg/dinner 1 week on 500mg/breakfast, 500mg/dinner 2 weeks on 1500mg (500mg/breakfast, 1000mg/dinner) 2000mg (1000mg/breakfast, 1000mg/dinner) I was working up to 2000mg all along. With you, I’d do 1 week on 500mg w/dinner, then add a 500mg the next week with breakfast, and then on 3rd (or 4th, depending on side effects) add the final pill with lunch. Take it as slow as you need it. It’s worth it. This is assuming you get the "regular" and not the "XR". The XR should be taken all at once, with dinner likely, in which case you just add a pill a week. > Did you need some off time because of the side effects? Weight loss will be > one of the best side effects ever.. lol but I fear missing much time at work > because of the diarrhea and nausea.

Sure
I found them in Amway, I haven’t seen something like these in a drug store. They work great. The bottle says "Nutrilite" Daily multivitamin and multimineral supplement. In the catalogue they are found I’d say about 10 pages in with a pic of veggies and text that say something about not getting your daily intake and yadda yadda. I’m on my third month taking them and the energy level I’ve gotten since I started is amazing. I mean not enough for me to get up and go to the gym or anything but enough to get me out of bed and get on with house cleaning type thing. lol Hope this info helps. Here’s what the bottle says (and what a huge bottle it is)… Alti-Metformin 500mg (Metformin HCI 500mg) 90 Tab ALT Take one Tablet 3 times a day with food. (Yet my doctor suggested breakfast, dinner and before bed. I think i’ll stick with breakfast, lunch, dinner type thing. I don’t eat before i go to bed.) Thats 1500mg right off the bat. OUCH. Here we go.. Side effect haven. My next appointment is in 3 weeks… I’m sorry but I don’t think I’ll be able to ajust to so much so soon. I think I’ll take your advice and start with 500mg the first week and move up and go back down if I can’t take it. The doctor did say start with full pills and if you can’t take it, cut down to 1/2 tablet 3 times daily. Sigh.. Your advice please? Since dinner is in like an hour I figure I probably won’t get a responce that quick so I’ll take my first tablet.. and wait til morning to take the other. thoughts please? Do it as I said. Take 1 a day for a week, and then go up to 2 a day, and then move up to 3 a day (assuming that you adjust properly). Take your time about it!

I totally agree. This is how I started taking it. Otherwise the stomach upset is horrendous. If I don’t take it with meals I still get diarrhea. Also, be careful about alcohol consumption, even one glass of wine gives me diarrhea since I started the Metformin. I have been taking it for about 3-4 months now. Good luck, Christy

i’ve been reading up a lot on metformin in an msn pcos newsgroup and the more I read the more i fear this isn’t for me. First off, what is making me doubt is that my doctor told me that I had low blood sugar levels.. Metformin will only lower them more no? Second, my NEW endo put me on 1500mg a day without even taking blood tests of her own to see if this would be appropriate. All she had in my file was a recommendation letter from a dermatologist and a request for appointment from my family doctor. Third, all she asked were usual questions, heart problems, shortness of breath, yadda yadda.. took my blood pressure, looked at my arms checked my neck and that was it. the whole initial appointment lasted 15 mins.. i was scheduled for 1 hour. one part of me would rather endure what I am going through now, the other part wants to find a solution but not at the risk of being so sick that i’d have miss work like many of the gals in the msn newsgroup. Sorry for blabbing.. I’m just really concerned now… more than ever. first pill taken 3 hours ago.. never felt so depressed. I think i’m reading up too much about this stuff. Hi Mel, Met and Glucophage DONT lower your sugar. It regulates your insulin. The insulin stays in the blood stream, causing fat to just kinda sit there and build up. When taking the met, the insulin gets absorbed into the cells, buring fat for energy. I too have low sugar. But thats normal for me. I wouldn’t be too worried about it. Its that first step…. Take Care Vicki

The bars seem a little mysterious to me. Some have an extreme amount of carbs, yet that packaging indicates to ignore all but 2 or 3 grams (depending on the bar. Some bars say "Net Atkins Count" as a certain number: like 2.6 and the count on the label IS 2.6, but there are 2 grams of fiber. Subtract the fiber????? or no? hmmm??? Curious Thanks, RSG

IIRC, the "net" count is how many are left *after* you take out fiber, sugar alcohols, etc. (those which don’t contribute to one’s glucose level). HTH-JM

But many people’s bodies metabolize them as carbs nonetheless. The USDA rules about labeling for sugar alcohols are kind of odd and based on regulations around diabetic foods–more of a chemistry experiment than an observation of real-life eating habits. The only way to find out if *your* body thinks sugar alcohols are carbs is to eat them and see if they stall you. I count **all** the carbs, including the s.a.’s, whenever I eat a low-carb bar (which is only in emergencies when no other food is convenient). Your mileage, of course, may vary. T.

Subtract the fiber, but in general do NOT subtract the sugar alcohol until you are *certain* that sugar alcohol does not effect you. Here’s the deal: Sugar alcohols are digested by intestinal bacteria so humans absorb a percentage that’s basically a roll of the cide each time. Might be low, might be almost all. The conservative approach is to assume you’ll roll a six. The theory is that people who aren’t sensative to carbs will not get any effect from foods as low in glycemic index as sugar alcohols. Folks posting on this newsgroup are virtually all sentsative to carbs. Catch-22: The ones who can deduct the sugar alcohols in the bars are the ones buying Hershey bars and not getting fat. The ones buying the low carb bars are paying big buck to have a label lie to them. Catch you on our other newsgroup, Robert! Doug Freyburger on Atkins since 1999-06-21

Just to clarify: If a product has a "net carb count" listed, they have already deducted ALL of the indigestible carbs to reach that net count, including fiber. So that is your final count. But on most other products, you still can deduct the fiber carbs. Reb

YMMV. I give very conservative advice. That makes my advice to count 100% of sugar alcohol carbs too conservative for you. There will be enough folks that need to count them all, especially newbies. Conservative advice is needed by some and it too strict for others.

When I had an ovarian cyst and benign tumor removed last summer I was warned that just the removal of an ovary in a PCOS can be enough to stimulate menses. Has anyone taken Glucophage for PCOS and not seen results? I’ve been on 1500mg since November and haven’t seen any positive results. I needed Provera to start a period, but haven’t had one on my own since. I haven’t had any weight loss despite low carbing. The hair issues haven’t changed at all. I know it hasn’t been that long, but I read about a lot of women who lose weight and get their periods without doing anything more than taking Glucophage. Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! Maureen

I had no luck on Glucophage, and took up to 2000 mg/day … all it did was upset my stomach. I had *fabulous* results on Rezulin, but of course that got pulled, and Avandia just isn’t quite doing it for me. Looking forward to INS-1, I can tell you! Laura

I am new to this site. I have been taking glucophage for a year. I think the key to the med. is to start at a low dose. My dose had to be lowered because I threw up eight times a day on 1000 mg. But… within two months I was up to 1500 mg. I have lost about 20 pounds, but I still need birth control pills to have a normal cycle. My endocrinologist also prescribed Zoloft for emotional ups and downs. I don’t know if it makes a difference or not in the way the meds work, but I was diagnosed with PCOS about the same time I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, and I use the meds to control both. My doc just put me on 1000 mg a day 3 weeks ago. I still get nauseous at random times from it and it doesn’t matter if I eat before or after taking it or if I take it in the middle of a meal. As it is now I’m on CD22 with no O, but my fertility monitor has been reading High for 4 days now. Maybe I’m in for a late O which would be miraculous since I RARELY O on my own. I was on 400 mg Rez a day… felt *wonderful*… got my periods *every* 28 days almost to the minute. Lost weight, felt great. I was in tears when they pulled it. I take 4 mg of Avandia 2x/day. Like I said, might as well be on nothing, though the blood work *does* say it is countering the insulin resistance well. My last cycle was 74 days, and that only because I did a progesterone withdrawal bleed. I am worse than frustrated. I just can’t wait for INS-1 to be on the market. My sister is on Metformin (generic) and my mother was on Glucophage (brand name)… both of them are diabetic. The meds have done wonders for both of them and my sister doesn’t feel as if she’s been given a second rate medication. The stronger smell of the brand name might be from the extra processing they do to make it "spiffier" looking… just a thought. BTW, my sister has lost over 25 pounds in the two months she’s been on the medication, she’s got much more energy and she’s a *lot* less grumpy too. – Leigh 7 unsuccessful cycles of Clomid still waiting for initial appointment with RE low sperm count and poor motility for DH finally confirmed PCOS for me

The reason for my sister’s dramatic weight loss is that she was about 200 pounds overweight when she started on the meds. I’m only abut 65 pounds overweight so I don’t expect my weight loss to be as dramatic as hers. Right now I’m waiting on b/w results so my doctor can determine the correct dosage, but as soon as that’s all done I’ll be starting Met and hopefully that will be all I need to kickstart my ovaries. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to proceed with IUI and we won’t have to do ICSI. Congratulations on losing the 9 pounds! <S I’d be so thrilled to lose that much. – Leigh 7 unsuccessful cycles of Clomid still waiting for initial appointment with RE low sperm count and poor motility for DH finally confirmed PCOS for me

Ah, ok. Well, I am also about as overweight as you–a little more. But I think the weight loss also may depend on how IR an individual is, and I am not overtly IR. My glucose tolerance tests check out normal. But I have so many other signs, plus some evidence of impaired glucose tolerance, that I take 2,000 mg. a day. After I lost the 9 pounds, my weight has been very stable over the last 2 1/2 years, in spite of stims and pregnancies. I give metformin credit for that. I haven’t really tried to lose weight because I think having a stable weight is better than a fluctuating one (for pregnancy), but now I am beginning to wonder. My ovaries have begun to look like strings of pearls, in spite of the metformin. I think that more aggressive diet and exercise might be in order for me, to help the metformin do its job. Sorry to ramble on like this. The spectre of metformin losing its effectiveness has been haunting me for a long time . . . yet nobody talks about it much. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to proceed with IUI and we won’t have to do ICSI.
Lots of luck to you. So many people have to wait so long to get any results, and it would be great if metformin is the final puzzle piece for you. Beth

Thank you. At times I have heard caveats about generic pills not dissolving properly, but I would tend to believe that there are solubility standards to adhere to before a pill can be marketed. Something interesting has happened since I asked the original question: I have gotten sick with GI complaints that I haven’t had since originally beginning Glucophage 2 1/2 years ago . . . so could this generic stuff be more accessible to the body than Glucophage? I wonder. Beth
Response:
The active medication in brand and generic is the same, you are correct. However the binders they use to form the medication into pills is different between the two. Those binders can sometimes make the difference in how your body reacts to your medication and whether it will work for you or not. I tried both when I was still taking it, only the brand worked for me. My son was also on a brand name medication (ritalin) because we had tried the generic which didn’t work for him. It’s all in what your system *decides* to do with it that counts. Jen

This sounds just like me. My BG was doing so well on LC that I split my 45 mg Actos. My BG is between 80-113. Soon I will be off it completely. bethm – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been on Metformin, but not while lowcarbing. I was nearly chained to the throne. Just now I got 90. 100 to 120 tyical upon rising provided I’ve been a very good boy. This is about what I run – between 100-120 for FBS and about the same when measured 2 hours after meals. I’m very pleased with it as I’ve been diabetic for 10 years and it hasn’t progressed at all. My doctor recently pronounced me "in the very early stages of diabetes" after my HB1a results came in. But one carby meal sends the glucose into the troposphere and puts on several pounds. When I eat completly off low-carb, my blood sugar goes nuts – can’t do it without oral meds. I find myself exhausted constantly, have a "foggy" brain, need a lot of naps, have no energy at all and any exercise at all requires inordinate amounts of willpower to accomplish. I also tend to get sick easily off low-carb. But when I’m on low-carb (for me that is 20-30 grams per day), I have found if I have a huge carby meal for dinner, by the next morning my blood sugar is stable again. This is *only* so if I stay on low-carb most of the time and only "cheat" once or twice a month – and in a CAD-like manner (eat carbs balanced with fat and protein and eat it all in an hour or less). Apparently, my body can handle some minimal abuse as long as I treat it well the majority of the time.

I have been low carbing and am on 1500mgs of glucophage XR. I had a little tummy trouble in the begining. Nothing to get too upset about though. It amounted to a couple of late nights in the potty – but at least it happened at night and not during the day. I take the glucophage with supper. I find it helps me lose weight – the combo of low carb/glucophage that is. I am on it for PCOS. I am not diabetic but I am insulin resistant. Personally I haven’t had any troubles I cannot live with and I believe it’s helping me greatly. Prior to glucophage and low carb I could eat a horse and wonder what was for dessert because I was still hungry 2 hours later. So the appitite stuff others are complaining about – is really wonderful for me in my opinion. I still get cravings for Chocolate…I used to be able to take it or leave it but now that I am in my 30’s it’s like the stuff has taken on a whole new meaning. Oh well… As far as the insulin or lack there of – it has not been a problem for me that I can tell. My grandmother – however, who was diabetic, had extremely low blood sugar when she ate some low carb meals with my parents. (Who had just started low carbing at the time.) Hi Rachel, I wrote that post just after moving up to 2250 (had been at 1500mg previously). Since being on 2250, my appetite has gone on vacation and in fact, I’m finding it hard to eat enough and am actually gaining again. That extra bit of dosage made the difference in feeling well and not tolerating it. My endo says to stick with it, because I’m still not seeing results for the reason I’m taking it (namely PCOS). I’m really trying to stick it out, but am getting worried about this anorexia. Protein shakes made with whole milk seem to be the trick for me, so I’ll keep doing that and hope I re-adjust soon.
Yeah, lack of appetite (particularly at lunchtime) is my problem too. I think perhaps we’ll have to invest in a protein shake again (stopped because the money got too tight) as it’s a handy filler-upper when you don’t feel like anything else. Did you get really thirsty when you started metformin? I’ve been chugging back the water like there’s no tomorrow this week. I figure it could be one of three things: 1. I was retaining tons of water after a high-carb blowout for 10 days previously/pre-TOM 2. It’s the metformin 3. It’s starting back at induction again Sunday and Monday I was purging water like crazy, fortunately didn’t get cramps though. I figure it was either the TOM/retaining water thing, or finally catching up from stopping taking spironolactone a few weeks back (even though I weaned myself off it ever so slowly). (spiro is a potassium-sparing diuretic, which I was on for PCOS but gave it up as it seemed to be a waste of time and I was trying to get off all the pills) cheers Rachel

That’s been my biggest problem with low-carbing honestly. I’m on metformin for PCOS and I take 1500 mg/day. I have found that sometimes I get very physically ill if I don’t eat enough carbs and take my meds. I’ve also got the problem of having no appetite whatsoever so it’s a serious struggle to get the proper amount of calories each day. Other than that, it’s tolerable, and it will help you lose weight while LCing. I hope your experience is better than mine with it, the sickness I’ve experienced with it has been enough to make me quit lowcarbing for a while. Now I’m back and hopefully things will be different. I’m considering getting an insulin tester just to make sure I’m not completely out of wack. Good luck! Erika RollerGirl

I tried Glucophage for my Diabetes and PCOS and couldn’t handle it. I had sever intestinal upset. I had to switch to Actos. You will know within a few days if ou can tolorate it. BethM – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Has anyone low-carbed while taking metformin/glucophage? I’ve just got a prescription for it, and want to check there’s no nasty side-effects I should watch out for (it levels out your insulin / blood glucose, which might be a problem if you’re not eating anything that causes insulin production … ?) thanks Rachel
