Generic metformin

Beth, A generic drug is the same chemical and strength as the brand name. They however can differ in color, shape smell and size. Brett GlobeDrug

Hi, Does anyone know about the efficacy of generic metformin? My DH came home with a refill for me and it was generic. It does not smell as strong as Glucophage, but I would like to believe that it is just as effective. I suppose that diabetics would be sicker if it were not. Anyone have any information, good or bad? My sister is on Metformin (generic) and my mother was on Glucophage (brand name)… both of them are diabetic. The meds have done wonders for both of them and my sister doesn’t feel as if she’s been given a second rate medication. The stronger smell of the brand name might be from the extra processing they do to make it "spiffier" looking… just a thought. BTW, my sister has lost over 25 pounds in the two months she’s been on the medication, she’s got much more energy and she’s a *lot* less grumpy too. – Leigh 7 unsuccessful cycles of Clomid still waiting for initial appointment with RE low sperm count and poor motility for DH finally confirmed PCOS for me

The reason for my sister’s dramatic weight loss is that she was about 200 pounds overweight when she started on the meds. I’m only abut 65 pounds overweight so I don’t expect my weight loss to be as dramatic as hers. Right now I’m waiting on b/w results so my doctor can determine the correct dosage, but as soon as that’s all done I’ll be starting Met and hopefully that will be all I need to kickstart my ovaries. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to proceed with IUI and we won’t have to do ICSI. Ah, ok. Well, I am also about as overweight as you–a little more. But I think the weight loss also may depend on how IR an individual is, and I am not overtly IR. My glucose tolerance tests check out normal. But I have so many other signs, plus some evidence of impaired glucose tolerance, that I take 2,000 mg. a day. After I lost the 9 pounds, my weight has been very stable over the last 2 1/2 years, in spite of stims and pregnancies. I give metformin credit for that. I haven’t really tried to lose weight because I think having a stable weight is better than a fluctuating one (for pregnancy), but now I am beginning to wonder. My ovaries have begun to look like strings of pearls, in spite of the metformin. I think that more aggressive diet and exercise might be in order for me, to help the metformin do its job. Sorry to ramble on like this. The spectre of metformin losing its effectiveness has been haunting me for a long time . . . yet nobody talks about it much. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to proceed with IUI and we won’t have to do ICSI.

Thank you. At times I have heard caveats about generic pills not dissolving properly, but I would tend to believe that there are solubility standards to adhere to before a pill can be marketed. Something interesting has happened since I asked the original question: I have gotten sick with GI complaints that I haven’t had since originally beginning Glucophage 2 1/2 years ago . . . so could this generic stuff be more accessible to the body than Glucophage? I wonder. Beth

The active medication in brand and generic is the same, you are correct. However the binders they use to form the medication into pills is different between the two. Those binders can sometimes make the difference in how your body reacts to your medication and whether it will work for you or not. I tried both when I was still taking it, only the brand worked for me. My son was also on a brand name medication (ritalin) because we had tried the generic which didn’t work for him. It’s all in what your system *decides* to do with it that counts. Jen

Beth, I take the Generic and it works the same for me as the name brand. I hope it helps you.
