Glucophage and no results?

Question:

Has anyone taken Glucophage for PCOS and not seen results? I’ve been on 1500mg since November and haven’t seen any positive results.  I needed Provera to start a period, but haven’t had one on my own since.  I haven’t had any weight loss despite low carbing.  The hair issues haven’t changed at all. I know it hasn’t been that long, but I read about a lot of women who lose weight and get their periods without doing anything more than taking Glucophage. Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! Maureen

I’ve heard that going up in dosage is what most people do. I’m sorry its not helping. Good luck! Victoria "KCBMOM" <kcb…@aol.com> wrote in message

I had no luck on Glucophage, and took up to 2000 mg/day … all it did was upset my stomach. I had *fabulous* results on Rezulin, but of course that got pulled, and Avandia just isn’t quite doing it for me. Looking forward to INS-1, I can tell you! Laura

I am new to this site.  I have been taking glucophage for a year.  I think the key to the med. is to start at a low dose.  My dose had to be lowered because I threw up eight times a day on 1000 mg.  But… within two months I was up to 1500 mg.  I have lost about 20 pounds, but I still need birth control pills to have a normal cycle.  My endocrinologist also prescribed Zoloft for emotional ups and downs. I don’t know if it makes a difference or not in the way the meds work, but I was diagnosed with PCOS about the same time I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, and I use the meds to control both. No positive results…yet…I am on 1500 a day and get nauseous often,  the occasional *upset* tummy, and seem to be ***gaining weight***!  Anyone have this happen? I have only been on it for a couple of months…but was on it a year ago for 5-6 months…the only thing I did notice a minor slowing of hair growth that time…but my dr. decided that it wasn’t working for me (no cycles)…my new dr. agreed to let me try it again… Lg

Response:

My doc just put me on 1000 mg a day 3 weeks ago.  I still get nauseous at random times from it and it doesn’t matter if I eat before or after taking it or if I take it in the middle of a meal.  I’ve lost about 3 pounds but have also joined a gym and been swimming a lot.  Still waiting on the ruling as to if it will help my cycles.  As it is now I’m on CD22 with no O, but my fertility monitor has been reading High for 4 days now.  Maybe I’m in for a late O which would be miraculous since I RARELY O on my own. Laura, Just curious what dosage of rezulin vs avandia were you on? I started out on Rezulin at 200 mg (my doc was afraid to up my dosage but I think 400 would have been better) My new doc put me on 8mg of Avandia (no real logic given for the dosage) — while my periods have been completely normal, I felt better on rezulin and I still miss it.  I lost weight on rez without trying (my appetite just became like a normal persons) — I find on avandia that I still crave huge amounts of food. I also am eager for INS-1 Lil>I had *fabulous* results on Rezulin, but of course that got pulled, and – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Avandia >just isn’t quite doing it for me.

I was on 400 mg Rez a day… felt *wonderful*… got my periods *every* 28 days almost to the minute. Lost weight, felt great. I was in tears when they pulled it. I take 4 mg of Avandia 2x/day. Like I said, might as well be on nothing, though the blood work *does* say it is countering the insulin resistance well. My last cycle was 74 days, and that only because I did a progesterone withdrawal bleed. I am worse than frustrated. I just can’t wait for INS-1 to be on the market. Any idea where it is on the pipeline at this point? What I would give to be in on the clinical trials….
