Question:
Hi Susan, It kind of depends on you, I guess. You need a certain amount for repair – which depends on your activity level, weight, amount of lean body mass, etc. I’ve been lowcarbing (due to insulin resistance) for 2 years and 9 months so far. I lost the extra hundred pounds over a year ago, and I thought I just didn’t register on the sticks anymore because of other factors (such as BC pills) – until I decide to experiment a bit. Then I realized that I was eating a lot of my calories as protein (a can of tunafish here, a couple of eggs there, to the cumulative tune of ~300 grams of protein daily). When I adjusted ratios, and upped the fat, keeping protein at ~100 grams a day the sticks obligingly turned all sorts of pretty colors.
It doesn’t matter how long you eat like this, there’s always something to learn. If you are losing right along, regardless of what color the sticks are, don’t worry about it, though. I still have a high level of insulin resistance, so I have to be more careful than others may have to be (eat 30 grams of carbs a day still). With that in mind, track what you eat and the effect it produces – that’s the key for long term success really – "Know Thyself". Take care, Carmen
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Carmen.. I don’t get it then.. if you are basiclly suppose to eat protien… then how much is too much? Susan Hi Susan, More than likely it’s the amount of protein you’re eating. Track your protein intake for a while, then adjust it and see what happens. Remember, the rate of protein conversion to glucose (gluconeogenesis) can run as high as 55 – 60%. Protein grams add up faster than one might think. too – the average slice of cheese runs 6 or so, an egg runs 6 or so, and a modest (4 oz) serving of beef runs in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 grams of protein. You might well be taking in 2 or 3 times the amount of protein you actually require. Hope this helps. Take care, Carmen Hi all.. I did PPP last year and did lose a bit of weight. I decided to give Atkins all I had. Totally strict… basiclly, It took me about 3 or 4 days to get into ketosis.. and I’ve stayed there.. I’ve been testing frequently just to see if or what affects my being in ketosis. Now I know this isn’t the be all and end all of weight loss, mostly curious and just wanting to monitor things closely so that when I add other foods back into my diet, then I’ll be able to determine if chemically there is a problem. this is basiclly what I eat.. breakfast.. steak and 2 eggs fried in olive oil decaf tea, black lunch cup of greens .. usually romaine.. with .04 carb/tbsp dressing. some kind of meat. supper, meat, greens meat is usually fried in olive oil, greens with olive oil or lc dressing. snack.. I usually have a pepperoni stick, edam cheese.. (2 slices) some pork rinds or something like that.. about 3-5 litres water a day. that is it. so.. today, I tested, and I was in the ’small’ range of ketosis I had my steak and eggs, I’ve implemented all my vitamin supplements.. being, multi, potassium zinc vit c fishoils chromium physillum husks cal/mag I’ve been taking all but the zinc, fishoils, calmag…until today but today several hours after I ate and took my vities.. there are no ketones in my urine. I’ll test later, I just wondered if anyone had the same experience? Again, I know ketosis isn’t ‘all that and a bag of pork rinds’… but just wanted some feedback.. thanks.. Susan

Hi Carmen.. I don’t get it then.. if you are basiclly suppose to eat protien… then how much is too much? Susan
You don’t really need more than .7g-1g of protein per pound of current weight. If you’ve got a lot of weight to lose, tend toward the .7 number, if you have less to los, tend toward the 1g number. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi again Chris, I went to your page, to see if I could spot any possible direction for you to look in, but the entries for the last two weeks were missing in action. So, the best advice I can give you is keep careful track of your intake (including amounts/weights – don’t "eyeball" because we can fool ourselves) and don’t count on Fitday to do the work. I noticed that some of the calorie amounts were odd – especially the extra lean ground beef. After you’ve tracked intake for a month or so, add up all the calories. Then look at your weight over that month – if you lost weight multiply that number of pounds times the 3500 cals per pound – if you gained do the same with that amount of weight. Then either add or subtract (as appropriate) those cals from the total cals you ate over the whole time period. Last step is divide the result by the number of days you tracked. That gives you a figure you can use to figure out what *you* require per pound of body weight (just divide it by the average weight you were during the month). Fitday is nice, but everyone’s metabolism is different and it doesn’t really allow for that. That’s information you can base a long-term program on. If this was incoherent let me know – I’ve been cramming 472,000 bone names and parts and stuff in my head so long I don’t know if I’m coming or going. <G Take care, Carmen
I have everything written down in my diet journal, I just have not been able to get the info into Fitday due to being very busy and away a lot over the past few weeks. Thanks for your comments. *If* you stop losing it is one of many possible reasons to explore. If you are losing just fine then don’t worry about it. Besides, as a guy you probably need more protein than I do (more lean body mass, higher goal weight than the average woman), you probably don’t have insulin resistance (or as recalcitrant a variety as I do), and I *know* you don’t have PCOS <G. You appear to be losing just fine, BTW. ’Kay? Take care, Carmen I think I should have lost more in the past month. I can only put down 2 or 3 pounds since the last weight-and-post almost a month ago. It’s probably that all the water you’re drinking is diluting your urine sample. I don’t drink water often ( I know, I know, a big no no on LC) and I always come out dark purple. The other day I drink two glasses of water and after my stick came out light pink.

Question:
If anyone is interested, the Discovery Health Channel will be airing a program entitled "Obesity: The Deadly Epidemic" on Saturday June 9th at 8 PM and 11 PM EST. I have not seen it and am curious as to what they conclude is the cause and what is the recommended treatment. The program description is: " Learn what it’s like socially, physically and emotionally to be obese. Explore how and why we get fat. Meet six people from the frontlines of the fat epidemic who shed light on this medical mystery." Have any of you seen this program? Is it biased toward the low-fat, high carbohydrate lifestyle as I suspect? Just thought some of you might want to check it out. Robert

Robert, Yes, it certainly is. I posted on it a couple days ago, it’s extremely biased. It shows that all fat people are fat because they cannot stop eating, eat too much, all their fault, etc.; 2 of the people get the surgery you avoided. However they don’t even touch on the side effects which are certainly there, showing the operation in a real rosy glow. I consider this really irresponsible reporting. For some strange reason, they keep picking people who either have ill-educated accents or some other strange speech defect… Weird. Amy

This past year I hosted a medical show on Discovery Health, and one of the episodes was on Weight Control… The actually did a segment on Insulin Resistance – I was impressed! I think one of the reasons the topic came up was because of me (insulin resistant & PCOS…) For the shows on that channel (and others) the ‘breadth" of the topic is limited by the knowledge and experience of the producers…in my case they were all skinny men. They had never heard of IR until I mentioned it to them. If you get a chance to catch the episode, the series is "The Body Invaders" – Weight Control episode. Today though I have actually put on 4 lb!! Now this is the womans part, could it be my periods are due?
Yes, hormonal fluid retention and/or you ate a bunch of salty stuff. I once put on 6 pounds of water overnight after over-indulging in bacon at a brunch buffet. It goes away in a few days. I can guess with confidence that you didn’t eat over fourteen thousand calories yesterday, which you’d need to have done to put on 4 pounds of fat. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

I promise, there is NO WAY I have broken the 20 carbs, if anything, Im trying hard to get up to that.
Just for future reference, if you ever do go on a carb cheating, expect a 3 to 8 pound water weight gain. When you refill liver and muscle glycogen by eating carbs, every molecule of glycogen carries several molecules of water with it. It will drop off again after a couple of days back on lowcarbing. — "There’s a seeker born every minute."

Question:
Hi Eboni, They weren’t dumb questions. The big problem is the answer is about the same for the majority of them – the ever frustrating "It depends". Here goes:
1. When you plan a cheat is it better to eat only complex carbs(slower insulin raise?) or in the end does it really matter? Oh yeah and does it slow insulin elevation if you eat your carbs w/ a lot of fat (think I read that in The Zone).
It depends. For some in the group (those with severe insulin resistance) the answer might be "no". As for the fat question, think about it this way…if you eat carbs, that leads to insulin release. If you add a lot of fat, you’ve given that insulin some fat to stick in your storage areas while it’s out and about. If your body is insulin resistant to begin with it might not be able to do the glycogen staorage in muscle cell part of it’s job, so it will happily do one of it’s other jobs. Yikes. 2. Does chromium help after a cheat? Is there any way to do some damage control?
I don’t think the chromium will help much as an emergency measure. Damage control might best be summed up in a word: exercise. 3. Why does eating carbs make you sooo thirsty? I could drink 32-64 oz almost straight when I eat pizza or sweets. How does that impact you releasing extra fluid when you get back on the wagon?
Carbohydrate’s storage form requires water, so your body wants some. Many people whoosh it back out when they go back to LC. 4. I’m taking Xenadrin and Citrichrome 1 cap ea. 2x a day, my weight loss has been great (4 lbs. a wk. religiously), but the need to eat is almost non-existent. Will my weight-loss slow due to low caloric intake or will the ingredients in the pills help me lose anyway? (I also do Tae-Bo, Calisthetics, and light walking pretty regularly 2-3x a wk.).
4 pounds a week is amazingly fast. The answer to the question about weight loss slowing is: 1) Probably, but maybe not because of intake 2) Probably, maybe due to low intake See what I mean about the phrase "it depends"? Your loss will probably slow, because as you lose weight your energy needs overall decrease. Part of the slowdown may be due to low caloric intake *if* it’s too low. What is too low? It depends. (Damn, there it is again!) How much do you weigh, how active are you, what does your particular metabolism behave like? Are you male or female? How old are you? Do you have any diseases/disorders? (IE PCOS, diabetes, etc) I know this wasn’t very helpful, but what it ends up boiling down to is carefully tracking everything you eat, do for exercise, and tracking weight. Eventually you’ll be able to spot trouble areas that you can work on by looking for cause and effect relationships. You are your own science experiment, so take good notes. Take care, Carmen

According to Atkins book (not my view) : Supposedly the complex carbs are digested differently and therefore resetting how your body digests food can be constructive. I haven’t read the zone in 13 years, so no comment on the second part. 2. Does chromium help after a cheat? Is there any way to do some damage control?
In Low Carb Living Fran McCullough gives some great strategies for what supplements to take after a cheat, however my dog ate the book so I can’t tell you what they are. 3. Why does eating carbs make you sooo thirsty? I could drink 32-64 oz almost straight when I eat pizza or sweets. How does that impact you releasing extra fluid when you get back on the wagon?
I am not sure why – but its clear eating the carbs makes me retain water. After getting back on the wagon it takes about 48 hours to get back to the weight i was before the cheat. 4. I’m taking Xenadrin and Citrichrome 1 cap ea. 2x a day, my weight loss has been great (4 lbs. a wk. religiously), but the need to eat is almost non-existent. Your weight loss may slow due to low caloric intake as your metabolism may slow. 4 lbs a week is a pretty miraculous amount to lose, and probably will slow down anyway. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Any help would be appreciated.

Question:
Hi Ladies. I went to the doc again on thursday of last week and he had told me that I may have Hypothalamic Hypogonadism. Well he called today and told me that no I don’t have that I have PCOS for sure. I already knew that as he and two other docs have dx me as PCOS a couple of years ago. I am on Met. I was on 1700mgs, but he spoke to a RE and she said to up my dose of Met to 2550mgs. Not a problem for me at all, I don’t get any side effects on it anymore anyway. So I up my dose today. We will see. He also is wanting me to do yet another round of Provera and then 3 days after I have to go and have more labwork done. I guess to see if there is any hormones to make me get AF? I don’t know but I am trying to be hopeful and positive this year. He also wants me to take bcp’s for three months to get my ovaries *right*. I don’t really know what *right* means by his definition. He also told me that he wants my weight under 200lbs before he tries me on Clomid. I have been trying to low carb but am not being to sucessfull at it. So today I am starting a workout program that my SIL does. She bought some of those *Total Gym* machines off the TV. No weights or anything, you use your own weight. You have all seen them the things with Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkly. Well she has two an old one and a new one. She has lost 20 pounds in the last 3 weeks. So I and MIL are going to go and start today. It is going to take some time for me to lose as I am being real about it and not wanting any Huge loss really fast. I know that being positive will help keep me focused and I know what I HAVE to do if someday I want my dream of a child to come true. He didn’t say anything about my bi-cornuate uterus though so I will have to ask him about it. I really need that checked out before Clomid. I would think so anyway. I mean *what if* the Clomid would work and I was to get pg and then I have this, it may turn out to be a m/c and I sure wouldn’t want that to happen. Well this is the latest of my news. I sure am glad that I have people to talk to about all of this. It makes life alot easier to know that somebody actually KNOWS what I am talking about. Anyway, I am rambling now. One last thing, CHIN UP GIRLS!!! LOL. Take Care, Tracy

Betsy More Questions- If I want to cut carbs to help with my weight loss, how low do I need to go to get results?
It depends ($1 to Lyle). If you’re insulin resistant or have PCOS (basically a medical reason) then pretty far back. If not, a gradual reduction is fine. It’s not magic. Calories in, calories out. Figure out how much protein you want to eat, and then split the rest between carbs and fat. I low carb because I have a horrid sweet tooth, and I feel better on LC than I did on LF. After eating this way for a year and a half, it’s just easier for me to eat this way. Why does cutting carbs help with weight loss?
It’s not a magic bullet. If you overeat on fats and protein, you’ll get fat. If I am weight lifting and doing cardio every day, do I need to increase my caloric intake above what I was taking in on just cardio? How much?
I don’t. What you need to do is TRACK what you’re doing now. If you continue to lose fat, stick with it. IF it doesn’t work, tweak. Just that easy. Cheers, Nina — 100% Angst http://www.theslack.com

YMMV … I lose weight when my carbs are below 60 g per day.

Question:
I know this has been addressed before. I did a deja search and found out that I’m not alone, but I still have a question. First, I’ve only had one depo shot and was scheduled to have another on Nov. 1st, but have decided to get the copperT IUD instead – so no more depo. What I’ve noticed since I started LCing, however, is that, whenever I’m in ketosis, Aunt Flo visits with a vengence – whenever I cheat, she goes away. So, the last five weeks have been a mostly constant Niagra Falls, with only a couple of breaks. And the last two weeks, since I haven’t cheated, have been non-stop. It’s getting annoying, obviously. What I’m wondering is, does anyone know if this will stop once depo wears off (and do you know when that’ll happen given I’ve only had one shot) or is this common even if you’re not on depo? I know LC diets can mess with hormones and that’s why it’s recommended for PCOS sufferers. Any info or similar experiences greatly appreciated. Melissa
Response:
Melissa, I recently read an article (November Cosmo ) which talks about using the pill month round- i.e. no periods. You skip the placebo pills and go straight to the next pack. This is apparently completely healthy, although some doctors suggest having a period every fourth month. I was considering an IUD as well, but figured I will try this first. The article suggests you confer with your OBGYN before trying this because a single dosage pill would be more appropriate than a tri dosage one, like triphasil. Apparently the only drawbacks are spotting in the first month or so and an inability to tell if you are pregnant. It also supposedly does away with hormonal issues of PMS. This is a BIG reason for me to try this as I am tired of being irrational, bitchy and crying at commercials. For anyones interest I will post my success with this method as it happens. I plan on starting next month. So this next week should be my last period!

Beth I think I’ve heard about that. I wish I could take the pill. I’ve tried it before and I constantly forget to take it (having that problem with my vitamins on this WOL too). Depo’s just every three months and I figured I could handle that, but I think it’s really screwing with my weight loss, even after only one shot. I would have done the IUD instead, but my nurse practitioner told me it cost $800. Ouch! But I did a little research and found out it actually runs about $500 – just a little more at my doctor’s office, and I have that much saved up, so I’ll get out of depoprovera hell before I’m burned too badly. Just ticks me off that the last 5 weeks on this WOL haven’t been more productive. Good luck to you, though. But don’t let those pills *totally* wipe out the bitch in you. The world needs a few good bitches, just to keep it on its toes. Best wishes, Melissa

Oh, this is normal bitchiness, it just gets irrationally bitchy during PMS. So dont’ worry. I personally think IUD’s are outrageous, especially considering some people can’t use them (after spending 500$). Although a friend whom i did a website for told me I could have one for free, not sure if i want a friend doing anything in that area. The pill makes it very hard for me to lose weight – this i know, but the alternative would make me gain far more weight. Melissa, please let me know how the iud goes – perhaps I will reconsider! — -Beth BikeE FX, AT and rans gliss Anchorage, Alaska

Glenda, Sounds like you’ve got really good news on a few fronts there! Still some puzzling questions, but it looks like your on the road to discovery! Take care, Donna
Response:
Glenda, I can relate to your frustration. I was/am in your shoes, too. No Met for me, either. <<my blood test results were excellent. Well, that’s GREAT!! <<I did want to go on Met to help with weight loss.. Yeah, me too. But, it’s not a "miracle weight loss pill". I guess folks tend to lose like 10 lbs at first, and it does make weight loss a little easier with the appropriate diet and exercise. << I don’t know why I still feel like s**t though. I just don’t feel like there is good news even though she was very impressed. I do understand. I was totally bummed to learn that everything was "normal"….yet I can’t ovulate to save my life (not once on my own in 20 years). But, I was reminded that not having IR means that I probably won’t get diabetes, etc in the future. Good going on the progesterone! Good luck! -Kay
Response:
G’day all Well I saw my specialist today and she isn’t going to put me on Met afterall. The reason being that my blood test results were excellent. The sugar levels were way down and everything else was +ve….my cholesterol was the best she had ever seen! Tryglycerides were 0.5! She gave me a big star for that. A few interesting things though – she asked if I were pg as my progesterone was at 18! I said that I highly doubt it but my prolactin was up too. Even though that doesn’t mean I am pg she is doing another bloodtest to be sure. I just can’t bring myself to do a HPT as I know that it will be a big fat O. But the good news is that I definately ovulated! I also had elevated testosterone which is PCOS’ ugly head rearing and she is going to do other tests to rule out anything else that could cause that. I also have a polyp in my uterus that needs to be removed next visit….this can interfere with implantation so she wants it out. Grrr – that will hurt. So there were some mixed results today – I did want to go on Met to help with weight loss but since I have been exercising vigorously I have felt a lot better and my cysts did disappear. I don’t know why I still feel like s**t though. I just don’t feel like there is good news even though she was very impressed. I just want to scream!!! Thanks for being a shoulder! Glenda

Hi Melanie,
Nice to meet you <G Congrats on getting back to size 26. That sure is an accomplishment! Hope you can find some real nice clothes that make you look and feel GR8! It really is nice to get to a place where we know "the limit" isn’t it? Good for you
As for exercise, just a 5 minute walk a day is a good start, then build up a minute a day until before you know it, you actually like doing it (true). LOL…. Getting started is the hard part. (Says she who put on over 20lbs over Christmas and is too embarrassed to go back to the gym). Best of luck to you

Overall (Was 273- Current 209- Goal 160 to 140) NAFC 212-209-200 HEY (pardon my screaming here but its well worth it) I CAN SHOP AT A NEW STORE NOW THAT I FIT IN A SIZE 26 AGAIN! Wow… I feel great! What a surprise when I went to the doctors on Dec 31st to learn that I had lost 17 lbs. I was shocked and happy. Though I did the mistake of celebrating with Mr. Hershey Kisses, it didn’t take me long to get back on track. Now taking Metformin to help me with PCOS, I find myself eating much less than before. Although it is still hard to stay away form chocolate. But I am seing now that I am on medication that I have less tolerance for candy. I eat a bit to satisfy my craving but thats it. Its now under control. Every day there’s a new surprise. I find that now, 1 bowl of soup satisfies me for lunch. I eat a bit more at dinner time but not enough to feel so full that I can’t move from my chair. Its as if I am starting to know my limits and it feels great. All this to say that I am now close to hiting my 30lbs mark. Gone for good! I am so happy. from Jan 1st to now I have lost another 8 lbs. Another 5 pounds. and I hit my first goal. As far as my new years resolutions are going.. well, needless to say I haven’t touched any veggies yet but I plan onto. The excersize thing, I’m still trying to figure that one out, but I think I will be getting at it soon enough since our public transportation may be going on strike and I may have to walk to work.. which is a good 45 minute walk in this cold. Ah well its a start
Thank you for all the links you have been posting. Even if I am just lurking around, I am still paying attention. & Congrats to all the loosers out there. Take care Chow Melanie. Was 300+ Now approx 275 WOOHOO is all i have to say!

The excersize thing, I’m still trying to figure that one out, but I think I will be getting at it soon enough since our public transportation may be going on strike and I may have to walk to work.. which is a good 45 minute walk in this cold. Ah well its a start

( – but I do pop in here as often as I can to keep up to date – though its hard as there are about 100 new posts a day!! So even if I don’t reply to your posts, I try to read them and send sympathetic/encouraging thoughts to you all!
) I’m on a big, wide plateau at the moment – have stayed at 160 for two weeks now even though I’ve stuck to points really well. There was a bit of an upset at the weigh in on Thursday as our regular leader is on holiday & the replacement lady used her own scales, which most of the other members didn’t agree with – and funnily enough I believe about 90% of the members either stayed the same or gained weight! So hopefully when Toni’s back next week we will all have lost loads! My cracked toe is just about fine now but I’ve got a black eye (and a headache) from my son (bless him!) slamming the wardrobe door into my face last night! He’s only 2 1/2 so couldn’t really understand why I was so upset! Anyway – I think about you all often & that’s what kept me on track so far – keep losing it, everyone!!
