2nd ivf extremely nervous

Question:

Hi everyone. I started the next cycle of ivf on sunday. Ultrasound, flare cycle of lupron 40 units x2 a day, follistim 4 vials intramuscular x2 daily. RE decided to try follistim intramuscular instead of sub-q shots. Has anyone ever had injections like this? My husband gave his first shot last night and it hurt like hell. I told him he did a great job and believe me I was not looking forward to injection today. It really wasn’t bad well like last night. I’m extrememly nervous but trying to stay calm. Well, thanks for listening. Joanie

Response:

Joanie, I’ve used Follistim (IM only), and it really did hurt bad!  I’ve heard the med refered to as "follisting" because it has a reputation to sting when going in.  I really dreaded getting the shot every night too. I’ve used most of the meds, Gonal F, Fertinex, Pergonal, and Follistim, but Follistim was the only one that hurt.  What we did to try to help was to ice the area first, mix the meds, and then let them sit for about 5 min after mixing it before we injected it.  I can’t say that it took the sting away all the time, but it helped a little. Good luck! Jennifer PCOS, 2000mg. Glucophage abdominal ectopic, May 2000

I did one cycle of Follistim sub-q, and it stings like h*ll that way too. Gee I never heard of IM shots daily.  I would ice the area like someone said.  Best of luck, your poor butt! Mary – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi everyone. <<Gee I never heard of IM shots daily. No?  They ALL used to be done that way, until 1996-1997 when Fertinex came on the scene, replacing Metrodin.   It was a pretty big deal, because it was a subcutaneous injection.  After that, came the sub-cu recombinants. Prior to 1996, the *only* injectable "stim meds" were Pergonal and Metrodin….both are IM. And speaking of "daily IM’s"…..I had to do daily IM progesterone injections (2cc each)  for about 18 weeks, during pregnancy.  -Kay

And some of us have had to give *ourselves* the shots too! Sounds scary at first, but like so many other aspects of IF, you get used to it. Just keep reminding yourself of the goal! Carolyne in TX

Wow, that’s rough.  I guess I was in treatment just in time for the switchover. Mary – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – <<Gee I never heard of IM shots daily.
