Alternative ways to take psyllium?

Question:

It is hard to get down if you can’t get past the thick gloppy thing. One way to force it down is to add one teaspoon to as much water as you can swallow in one gulp.  Then follow with a good long drink to wash it all down into your stomach. Alternatively, you can buy Psyllie Snax crackers/chips http://members.tripod.com/~PsyllieSnax/ and use them as croutons or dippers in tuna or egg salad. Then again, if you just can’t get past the psyllium.  Look for a product called Pro-Fibe.  It dissolves better and goes down easier. Mixes with protein powders better than psyllium.  And doesn’t go quite as thick and gloppy.  Pro-Fibe is a blend of grapefruit fiber and guar gums (both soluble fibers) like psyllium. As you determine your safe carbohydrate consumption level adding more cruciferous vegetables (lightly cooked) can give you more fiber plus phytonutrients.  Oh yeah, almost forgot.  Some ground flaxseed meal is good for a bit of mixed soluble and insoluble fiber.  HTH Lee Rodgers The Lowcarb Retreat http://www.lowcarb.org – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, I finally tried taking psyllium fiber (I actually bought it around 6 wks ago, but was afraid to try it for fear of um, *urgency* interfering with my morning commute).  I added 1tsp to 1 cup of water, stirred it (it didn’t disolve) and tried to drink it.  I got almost all of it down, then ended up throwing most of it up and dumping the rest.  (Sorry to be so graphic, but I’ve learned that it pays to be specific when requesting help). So, do I have to drink it?  Can I add it to foods or protien shakes?  Any creative ideas? I thank you all in advance. Tracy 255/203/130 Atkins since 1/2/99

Get fibercon tablets and forget the slimy, gagging, goo. You can also buy psyllium in tablet form, but you have to take quite a few. You can also make your own by filling gelatin capsules.  With the fibercon, I only take 1 every other day (started taking one a day on induction, and cut back when not needed). Sugar Free Metamucil Orange reminds me of Tang. I actually like it. I take a heaping tablespoon in about 16 oz. of water and just chug it down. Don’t let psyllium sit around or it becomes sludge like. Regards, Peter

Bottle says three a day.  I do the 3 a day, then if I have not gone by the 2nd day, I double the dose. Then if it’s three days (only happened twice) I take some liquid stuff (kids stuff) to prevent the passing of King Kong<G.  You only make that mistake ONCE. Trouble with GNC is that 180 capsules = $13.50.  Gotta be cheaper elsewhere.  I’ve got to try other health food stores but they are only open during the day. GNC is in the mall so it’s always open. I figure as I add carbs the problem will correct itself. I’ve added 1/2 cup of strawberries/blueberries. No problems the past week. I’ve been about 20g carbs for the past 5 weeks. I might have to up that a little more. I’m having trouble doing that though. I’m having too good a time with the way things are going.  My stored fat is melting like crazy, I feel great, but I’m afraid it’s going a little too fast.  Now that I’ve said that I’ll probably stall<LOL — Dave 180/163/140 http://dmarkson.home.att.net – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -beth, how many capsules of psyllium husks does it take? We got a "gold card" from GNC, which we go every first Tuesday of the month and get 20% off anything (this is cool if they happen to have a sell on what we want).  Also, I have seen these capsules at Earthfare (which is open weekends, if you have one in town and Garner’s probably has it too).  Also, you can order some things like this through the mail.  Do a websearch on psyllium and no doubt you will come up with places you can mail order from.  ^–^ { ‘.’}cathy-to send e-mail, delete edyclub    `   My web page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/index.html Hope for Cysters: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/PCOS.html

My dr. recommended psyllium to me in the first place as a natural way to improve cholesterol.  Also good for cholesterol is flax seed oil (or flax seed itself), garlic, vitamins C and E and niacin (however if you are IR, you might want to skip the niacin, it is know to worsen glucose tolerance in some people at high doses).  There are other supplements as well that I can’t think of–but most of them have some form of fiber :-)  ^–^ { ‘.’}cathy-to send e-mail, delete edyclub    `   My web page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/index.html Hope for Cysters: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/8060/PCOS.html

I put a heaping tablespoon of psyllium in a cup, add a bit of Splenda, and only enough water to get it all wet. Then I eat it with a spoon and pretend it’s jello. Then I drink a couple cups of water. Doesn’t really do much for me, though.  No urgency at all. High doses of niacin really mucked up my husband’s glucose levels.  Niacin seems to be the only thing that worked on the cholesterol.  Now that he’s doing lower carb, his glucose is more normalized and he has dropped his niacin dose. We’re both taking a tablespoon of flax seed a day.  I love the nutty taste and sometimes just eat it with a spoon right out of the bag! Hurrah–I am so glad that he is doing better! Like you, I can’t stand the slimy goo, so I take psyllium capsules instead – just be sure to quaff a glass of water with them. It’s completely inoffensive this way. As for urgency, don’t worry. It’s not a laxative. It’s just fibre, to give your bowels something to work on. I find it really helpful for maintaining regularity (know what I mean?!) — Rosie "Damn. I use really cold water. From the fridge. That way the psyllium doesn’t have a chance to start "gooing up" before I drink it. It’s an acquired taste.  ;^)     Michael

Personally…..I use less than 1/2 of a tablet of Imodium A-D when I have that problem.  I rarely need to do this any more.  I’ve added extra veggies and Fiber One and my body seems to have adjusted (after about a month).
