Avandia Vs. Metformin

Question:

> What is HbA1c? and what should those numbers be to be >considered "good"?

I will go ahead and answer in case Beth doesn’t make it back soon.  That is diabetes lingo.  It is a glycated hemoglobin test which lets the dr. see "back" for the past few months what a patient’s average blood glucose value was during that time.  This test is used on diabetics but is not used to diagnose diabetes since many diabetics under good control can have a normal test.  Also, some diabetics may have a normal HbA1c if they have suffered a lot of "lows" along with their highs during that time.  Diabetics are encouraged to test at home often to take results to their dr. to compare with the tests there.  If the diabetic had a lot of lows or highs, their normal HbA1c may have been the result of the lows canceling out the highs in giving the average value.  If the diabetic tests in the approved range most of the time at home, he/she can feel confident that the HbA1c truly reflects how well he/she did for the past few months.  ^—^ Cathy { ‘ . ‘ }       `  Those who play with cats must expect to be scratched. 4Cysters: http://pages.ivillage.com/bh/cystercat Other pages: http://peaceonearth.faithweb.com http://littlec.faithweb.com http://www.i-love-cats.com/meow/cat

Victoria, I still haven’t received my liver results yet.  According to the drug manufacturer, you should have a baseline done before starting Avandia, then every 2 months for a year, then periodically after that. beth "Victoria Nicholls" <nich…@mail.cs.odu.edu> wrote in message

Well while I’ve not <yet> had success in regulating my cycles on Avandia, my HbA1c has been TREMENDOUSLY better on Avandia vs. metformin.  My initial test was 7.4%, after a few months on met it only dropped to 7.1% and after 6 weeks on Avandia, it was 5.8%!  I’m also noticing that hair regrowth is slower and the darkened skin in my armpits has lightened a lot.  I’m also spotting like I might start a period any day, and this is after 2 months on Avandia.  I never had any periods or spotting while on met for 7 months. Beth, Thanks for the info. What is HbA1c? and what should those numbers be to be considered "good"?  Have you had any side effects from the Avandia?  I noticed one of the listed side effects was upper respiratory infection…do you know how this is caused from the med? I appreciate your helping me to understand this all! Karen http://members.truepath.com/My_Hope/karen.html

I have taken met, rez and Avandia. It’s very important to get your liver enzymes tested monthly for the first year while on rez or Avandia. Wende

If you post this on the PCO email list, I know there is at least 1 person on there (can’t remember her email) who said she has. Has anyone had success with Avandia, and no success with Metformin? I have heard a combination of the two together might be successful.  Any comments?
