What is cortisol? HJ 245192145 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello! Well this past weekend I had a whole wack of tests done.  They are checking my thyroid again as the last test came back saying my cortisol was through the roof but everything else was fine.  Now other good news was he took my blood pressure.  I had it done about 3 months ago and it was 145/90 (not sure about bottom number).  Been on atkins since May 5/99 and when he checked it yesterday it was 120/80.  Yahoo!  Normal range and he was very pleased.  However he babbled on for 20 minutes on how I was way too young to be overweight and worried about high cortisol and blah blah.  Also that I should cut every portion of food I put in my mouth in half and that I should be exercising 7 days a week an hour everyday!  I sort of said yah right…walked away. What do you all think?  Blood pressure down from Atkins?  I think it must as I had it tested before it was 145/90 and it was high then (I think about 6 months before the first test was done).  Anyone else out there know about thryoid disorders and symptoms and such?  If so I would love to hear from you.  I will be sure to get the numbers of everything this time as well.  Thanks in advance SArah 235/225 (still gosh darnit!!)/160 started may 5/99

Cortisol is a normal hormone produced in the outer portion, or cortex, of the adrenal glands, located above each kidney. The normal function of cortisol is to help the body respond to stress and change. It mobilizes nutrients, modifies the body’s response to inflammation, stimulates the liver to raise the blood sugar, and it helps control the amount of water in the body. Another adrenal cortex hormone, aldosterone, regulates salt and water levels which affects blood volume and blood pressure. Small amounts of androgens (male hormones) are also normally produced in the adrenal cortex. Cortisol production is regulated by adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), made in the pituitary gland, which is located just below the brain. http://medhlp.netusa.net/www/nadf.htm 5′6" 312(52)-237(44)-160(36-38?)-work pants size ( Longing to be the woman I was, not the woman I could be! ) *1999* My Millenium Makeover In Progress-All Things in Moderation Losing the weight is only step one. Sarah, Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but I’m quite sure BP is the first improvement we see when we begin low carbing. It was for me too. Way to go, btw. Great start. Keep up the good work! Jean 230/196/148 3-15-99

Does anyone have any personal experience of high BP going down after a while on a low carb WOE? I have been on medication to keep my BP in check for years – normal for me is around 160/100 after the drugs kick in. Lately I have been occasionally feeling a bit light-headed and so checked my BP. It read 145/90. Quite a drop. I know that one reading is just an indication, not an absolute, but it is interesting. Atkins does make claims for lowered BP stats in his book, but I would love to know if anyone has actually experienced it. Thanks, Martin.

Yup, many of us.  I’m down to an unmedicated 120/85 even when on ECA.

I have. Historically, I have really low blood pressure. But just before I started the diet it was creeping up to 190/110 (not frightening, but high). A year later and 30+ lbs lighter, I’m back to my norm – 120/70 or less. -georg

my pressure was up after a few months of low carb. I was getting headaches everyday. so I just keeped a record of what I ate for the day as far as sodium counts. i gave up bacon, sausage, canned veggies and now drinking decaf coffee. also cut back on cheese… i started reading labels very surprised… i bought a blood pressure machine to keep checking it. so far so good. it took me 2 weeks to get it down.

donated blood yesterday with no ill effects. I cant help but wonder if that also assists in weight loss due to the bodies efforts to replace the blood. Ive been on low carbs for about a month now and have stalled at a 13lbs loss but my BP went from 155/95 to 125/72. I look better, i feel better and apparently my heart just told me its enjoying itself too! Thanks for the support

I have read that blood pressure should improve on the Atkins plan, probably due to the weight loss.  I was borderline high and taking Zestril off and on, but I stopped taking any medication afraid it might screw up something. Does anyone know if this is a "bad" medication?  I feel a little guilty (just a little) eating all these eggs and meat. Robert 183/174/145 since 8/1/99

Robert, Loosing weight does tend to lower blood pressure, however, most people with high blood pressure will notice a very rapid decrease, usually within the first week.  This rapid decrease comes not from the weight loss, but because of water loss & increasing the flexibility of the arteries as a result of lowering your insulin levels.  Insulin tells the kidneys to retain water & makes the arterial walls more muscular & less flexible.  By decreasing your insulin levels quickly by reducing your carbohydrate intake, blood pressure will improve for almost everyone on this WOE who has high blood pressure. Every time I went to the doctor, my blood pressure would be up in the 150 range, the doctor kept saying he didn’t trust blood pressures when a person was sick, so he wasn’t terribly concerned, and said to come back some time when I was feeling well to get it checked…  I knew I had high blood pressure, because I’d check it at Walmart etc. in those sit- down machines there, and it was always in the 150 range, but I didn’t want to be taking BP pills the rest of my life, along with the side- effects they have, so I just ignored it.  (I know, probably not the smartest thing I’ve ever done….)  I checked my BP at Walmart a couple weeks ago, and instead of 150+/95 it was 128/82! Before starting Atkins last Sept., my BP was borderline high. Had it taken just yesterday, and danged if I can remember the exact numbers, but I do recall thinking, "Both just below average!". And the Nurse said something along the same lines. — Michael Hartsough 350/238/220 Atkins since 9/98

Response:

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and not eating too much sodium, causing you to retain water.  Most people experience exactly the opposite effect on BP on this WOE. HJ 245/190/145
