DENVER
Question:
I watched this unfold with horror yesterday afternoon. I immediately called my youngest step son and tell him how much I loved him. I couldn’t help but think of how I would feel had he been at that school. When I think back to my high school years, and believe me, they were some of the worst of my life, I can’t help but see how so much of what has changed in the world has caused these kids to not only consider something so awful, but actually carry it out. The cops found 30 bombs around the school. These kids intended to blow up the entire building. Thank God they were stopped before they could do it. Why anyone needs Ak47’s is beyond me. If they had only had single shot hand guns so many more kids would have come out of this alive and unharmed. I also think that we all need to look with in ourselves because this is not the first time this has happened. Just the worst so far and the words so far send a shiver down my spine. When I was in high school, I took all the teasing and abuse. I cried every day and felt total shame and worthless ness. I was afraid of people because they hurt me so much. There was no one to go to and no way to stop it. Now our children are feeling the same way, but there are a lot more deadly ways they can react than in my day. I hope we all realize how important it is to teach our children compassion and tolerance for all. Kids can be so awful to others they perceive as weaker and an easy target. What a horrifying thing … it’s hard not to be shaken when you hear the kids describe what was happening. I wonder if anyone really recovers from something like that. Sounds like the teachers really came through in trying to keep some of these kids safe. You really have to admire that. I had a teacher friend call me last night (he’s here in Ohio, not there — just for clarification) — he seemed pretty shook. (He said at his school they take kids who seem disturbed VERY seriously, just because of things like this, but you never know for sure …) Sad to say, but something like that could happen anywhere, anytime. A lot of news stories have pointed out that many people have already "forged" eric and dylan’s information in various places. Very early on Tuesday evening, they had one of the guys’ .projects or profiles or whatever as "today’s my last day on earth." At this point, almost anything "real" has been removed and retained for the police; anything you’ll find could be a forgery.

But you’ve put beautifully into words what I was trying to relate. I hope you don’t mind if I quote you… The whole tragedy…well, all of them in the past couple of years, has really made me contemplate whether I want to have kids. It’s so scary.
