Doctor visit, still low Glucophage dose

Question:

>>lso, he is not interested in lowcarb for me. He says lowfat, low animal >>products, high in vegetables, whole grains and lean meats like fish and >>chicken >>and a little fresh fruit and lowfat dairy. He is more concerned with my fat >>and total calorie intake than carbohydrate intake. My cholesterol was like >>185 >>so he says it needs to come down to like the 160 range.

Actually, if you look at Protein Power, the authors recommend a cholesterol between 180 and 200. They claim that going lower than 180 increases the risk for other health problems such as brain aneurisms and some types of cancer. Your doctor’s thinking is rapidly becoming outdated. Besides, low-carbing does bring your cholesterol down by lowering your insulin levels (higher insulin levels force your liver to produce more cholesterol). I dumped my endo when he kept up the ever-lower cholesterol routine. He isn’t God and I have to do what’s best for me. He just needs to get with it. I have no regrets.

Response:

Hi all, Had another followup with Endo. He says my BG is great, within normal limits, so no reason to raise Glucophage beyond 500 mg. But, Testosterone levels have not dropped, so he doubled Aldactone to 100 mg a day. I asked if I could get my Glucophage increased to se if I get quicker results, but he says as long as I am <getting> results he is not going to increase it. I am seeing improvement, but very slowly. Periods are at least semi-mormal and I have lost probably 20 lbs. in the past 6 months. Seems too slow for my preference, but at least it is something. Also, he is not interested in lowcarb for me. He says lowfat, low animal products, high in vegetables, whole grains and lean meats like fish and chicken and a little fresh fruit and lowfat dairy. He is more concerned with my fat and total calorie intake than carbohydrate intake. My cholesterol was like 185 so he says it needs to come down to like the 160 range. Just wondered if anybody else is having a very conservative treatment. Doctor said it took 20 years to get diagnosed, it will take some time to improve. Just frustrating! Tracy

Yeah the doctors all recommend the "food triangle" as me & my hubby call it. It’s totally bizarre. I’ve read a bunch of studies and the stuff that’s generally wrong with PCO women (high insulin, high triglycerides) is improved on a low carb diet. I think alot of doctors rest on their laurels. They don’t keep up with studies. I think Dr’s DO keep up with their studies. Just as a person studies their faith for example. There are some sects that are similar and some are different but they are always learning and studying but they don’t change their core beliefs. Some of the original food pyramid studies have very valid health benefits even for PCOers. The faiths comparison probably isn’t a very good one but I hope you get my point. I hope people are smart enough and heaven knows there’s enough drs (at least where I live) for patients to choose drs who keep up with the latest changes in medicine. Just my opinion. Have you considered printing research articles on standard doses of PCO women. Tho, maybe he has considered that and you are just an exceptional case. >I am seeing improvement, but very slowly. Periods are at least semi-mormal >and >I have lost probably 20 lbs. in the past 6 months. Seems too slow for my >preference, but at least it is something.

I am glad you are improving! I hope I can lose twenty pounds in six months! I have only lost 2 so far but haven’t been at it that long. No period at all yet. >lso, he is not interested in lowcarb for me. He says lowfat, low animal >products, high in vegetables, whole grains and lean meats like fish and >chicken >and a little fresh fruit and lowfat dairy. He is more concerned with my fat >and total calorie intake than carbohydrate intake. 185? I wish I was 185. I was about 270 before starting to curb carbs and add cholesterol lowering supplements. I was 204 a few months later when I received my initial diagnosis. I went up again on Rez (Rez raises total cholesterol but doesn’t affect the ratio). I except it to go lower on Met since that is one benefit, but you still got me beat all over the place, Cyster! You are doing good! ^–^ { ‘.’}cathy-to send e-mail, delete edyclub `
MY_WEB!
PCO-YOU_A RE_NOT_ALONE!
