embarrassing but wondering

Question:

<<I was just wondering if anyone has any idea if lubricants interfere with sperm.  I have a probem with vaginal lubrication and I have tried KYJelly, KY liquid, Vagisil Intimate Moisturzer…

I have heard that a few drops of Canola oil are much better than using any of the artificial lubricants on the market.  This is based on studies.  I can’t quote the source, but I saw the study a month ago. — Vikki M. http://users.gibralter.net/~vikbill

<<I was just wondering if anyone has any idea if lubricants interfere with sperm.  I have a probem with vaginal lubrication and I have tried KYJelly, KY liquid, Vagisil Intimate Moisturzer… Yes, they can interfere.  I have read a few studies indicating such (don’t have the URL’s handy, but it was from a MedLine search, if you want to try to check).  My RE suggests using a very small amount (the least you can get away with) of mineral oil. Some people suggest using egg whites, but I worry about potential for Salmonella infection.

I was in the grocery store the other day and saw that you can now buy liquid, pasteurized egg whites; that would prevent the risk of salmonella. Leah

Response:

Hey are you aloud to have Oil on your diet?  Just kidding.  Good Luck. Shron

Response:

My r.e. recommends mineral oil.  Good luck!

Response:

If you don’t mind permanently staining your sheets, cooking oil (vegatable, corn sesame) does indeed make a wonderful lubricant.  My ob/gyn told me this 20 years ago.  And because it is natural, it won’t interfere with sprem as some "OTC" lubricants can.

Response:

HEY KARI!  WE TRIED "ASTRO-GLIDE" (WALLGREENS OR ANY OF THOSE "DRUG STORES") AND CALLED THE 1-800-848-5900 #.  THEY TOLD US, IT HAS NO SPERMICIDE IN IT, BUT IT MAY SLOW DOWN THE MOVEMENT OF THE SPERM A LITTLE.  SO WHAT WE DID (AND I HAVE TO GET A LITTLE BIT GRAPHIC), PUT A LITTLE BIT ON THE TIP OF THE ERECTED PENIS AND TRY, IF IT WORKS, KEEP GOING. IF IT IS STILL NOT COMFORTABLE FOR YOU , PUT A LITTLE ON THE VERY ENTRANCE TO YOUR VAGINA, IN CONJUNCTION WITH A LITTLE BIT ON THE TIP OF THE ERECTED PENIS AND TRY AGAIN.  IT MAY GIVE THE FEMALE A LITTLE BIT MORE PRESSURE (IE. DISCOMFORT), BUT IT WILL WORK, WITHOUT ORGASM.  THE ONLY OTHER WAY I CAN THINK OF IS, IF YOU GUYS ENJOY ORAL STIMULATION.  HAVE HIM "GO DOWN ON YOU" AND GET YOU TO COME, AND THEN YOU HAVE INTERCOURSE BECAUSE THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH NORMAL LUBRICATION (ONLY IF ORGASM OCCURED) TO CONTINUE INTERCOURSE.  SORRY ABOUT THE GRAPHICS, BUT I DON’T KNOW HOW ELSE TO EXPLAIN IT.  ___THIS IS NOT  A PORN SITE__

Response:

The only lubricant that I’ve heard was safe to use is egg whites. Since they are made of protein they actually help the sperm whereas the other lubricants might not. Have you had your hormone levels checked yet? They can contribute to your dryness. Good luck to you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was just wondering if anyone has any idea if lubricants interfere with sperm.  I have a probem with vaginal lubrication and I have tried KYJelly, KY liquid, Vagisil Intimate Moisturzer and a few other things. No matter what, I end up having problems with them.  I have been unable to get pregnant for 2 1/2 years and I was just wondering if theses "artificial" lubricants may be contributing to the problem.?  I have some other medical problems, but I am trying to narrow down each prob one at a time so I am curious about the lubrication issue.   Also, my GYN told me to try cooking oil…any kind….It makes a "wonderful" lubricant he says….has anyone else EVER heard of this?  I just question how safe that would be to use…….If anyone has any input to give me I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Kari

I know this but we certainly get graphic sometimes! I guess it is part of the process.  HAVE HIM "GO DOWN ON YOU

Though this sounds like a fabulous idea I have to dissagree. I have read in numerous places that saliva is not good for sperm. The saliva has been found to have a "degrading effect on semen and reduce its ability to fertilize an egg."

My RE recommends CANOLA OIL…and my good friend, who also visits the same doctor, tried it and says it’s BETTER than K-Y could ever dream of being… (that’s a good review!) — Trisha93 5+ yrs IUI,IVF, FET,twin m/c counting down to FET in mid-May

Response:

I absolutely need KY and I have able to conceive twice while using it.  As long as it has no spermicide it should be OK.  And I always made sure my DH didn’t spread it over the "tip" so it wouldn’t hinder ejaculation (sorry to be so graphic!!)  Good luck to you- Diana

Response:

Isnt Astroglide safe when ttc? I swear I have read about it on a TTC bulletin board thats its ok to use.     Someone please correct me if I am wrong!            Chris    Wife to Gregg    Mommy to Maddy (7),    Diagnosed with PCOS in Aug 98    TTC #2

Response:

Cooking oil is a bad idea since it can harbor bacteria and sustain an infection. Anything oil or petroleum based in not recommended. The only thing I have read of or heard of from a doctor that is OK to use is raw egg white. It is made of the same proteins as natural lubrication and does not impair sperm motility like KY jelly or oil does.  Get it to room temperature and put it in with an insertion device (they come with yeast infection medications).  This should help.
